SCREW PINE AND THE CRAFT

Screw pine weaving of mats is one of the traditional crafts practiced by

womens of Kerala. The Screw pine craft is a traditional craft which forms one of
the important sections of the natural fiber craft of Kerala. This craft started off
due to the abundant availability of raw materials. The screw pines, during earlier
days were used as fences or boundaries. The history of the craft says that the
women in the households started weaving mats out of the screw pine which
grew in their backyard and fences due to poverty they were facing.
Women started exploring with screw pine, making bedding mats and other
household items so they do not have to buy from the traditional method for
extracting the silken fiber of screw-pine leaves involves coconut fiber. The coarse
fibers remove the small thorns that appear on both sides of the screw-pine leaf.
They are dyed and tied together into small clumps that make it easier to use
them.
Weaving the screw-pine threads into a fabric is a complex job demanding deft
fingers and only the highly skilled and agile artisans are involved in it. Authentic
screw-pine products can be quite expensive in some cases.
Artifacts made of Screw Pine
In Kerala, some regions are known especially for their screw-pine products for
instance, Thazava, Vachrai and Vallikunnam villages in Thiruvananthapuram and
Kottayam districts, Mavelikkara and Karthikapalli in Alappuzha district and
Karunagapalli in Kollam district of Kerala.
The many families that have been working with screw-pine for generations are
now practicing their art with more vigor and passion, because in the modern
world this ancient tradition of Kerala is feared to be diminishing. Most of the
practitioners, along with many enthusiasts, work hard to follow the traditional
methods with a view of preserving its heritage and quality.

Due to its exquisite handiwork and gentle demeanor, screw-pine products are
popular among tourist and locals as gift articles and souvenirs. Perhaps the most
important factor is the labor and passion of the artisans creating these
masterpieces, which makes the screw-pine mats, purses and wall-hangings so
special.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF SCREW PINE CRAFT

We visited Jawaharlal Memorial Social Welfare & Public Cooperative Centre,
Thalayolaparambu. Jawaharlal Memorial Social Welfare & Public Cooperation
Centre is a voluntary organization registered under Charitable Societies
Registration Act. The Organization has been working for the welfare and
development of the weaker sections of the society. Jawaharlal Memorial Social
Welfare & Public Cooperative Centre has been selected as a Nodal Agency for
the implementation of the scheme for the development of screw pine mat
weaving craft at Vadayar village, Thalayolaparambu panchayath. As part of this
program the Jawaharlal Memorial Social Welfare & Public Cooperative Centre
conducted design development workshops.
The participants of the workshops were traditional screw pine artisans of the
locality. The main aim of the workshops was to upgrade artisans skill through
appropriate design technology intervention.
Workers: The screw pine craft cluster of Jawaharlal Memorial Social Welfare &
Public Cooperation Centre consists of 10 groups with 20 members each. Most of
them are traditional weavers. Earlier, training classes were conducted
occasionally. But now there are only 12 workers. The main reason for the

reduction of the number of workers is low wages. Out of this almost everyone is
going for Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme which ensures 100 days of job
and they are paid more than what they are paid for the craft.
Technology: They have a building given by government and have got some
machines The participants of the workshops were traditional screw pine artisans
of the locality. The main aim of the workshops was to upgrade artisans skill
through appropriate design technology intervention.

suppied goods to companies like fabindia and to some fairs and exhibition
conducted seasonally.

Plastic products are much cheaper then screw pine mats. Cost of Screw pine
mats Rs. 350 1500. For single layer mats the cost varies from 200 to 350 . For
methapaya , double layered mats cost varies from Rs 1350 1500. Mats are not
widely in demand.
Exemption of Screw pine products from Sales Tax Earlier the artisans used to
pay 8% tax on screw pine products. The exemption of Tax has led to an increase
