DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
INTRODUCTION :
This report presents design of sub-structure of abutment, pier and their pile foundation. the super-structure span
arrangement is 2 x 15.22 m (c/c of expansion joint) precast RC girder type. Total carriageway width of bridge is 12.0 m.
Cross camber of 2.5% is provided in both direction. Wearing coat of 65 mm thickness is provided. Super-structure is
supported by 4 nos. of bearing at each end.
Materials used and their general properties :

Loading considered :
1)
Selfweight of superstructure
2)
Superimposed dead load (crash barrier/ railing, wearing coat etc.)
3)
Sub-structure selfwight
3)
Live load:
a)
Three Lane of class A ,
b)
Single Lane of Class 70 R + Single Lane ofClass A
Code of practice followed :
IRC 6 : 2000
IRC 21 : 2000
IRC 78 : 2000
IS : 2911 (PartI/ Sec-2)

Standard specification and code of practice for raod bridges (Load and stresses).
Standard specification and code of practice for raod bridges (Cement concrete (Plain and
reinforcement)).
Standard specification and code of practice for raod bridges (Foundaion and Substructure).
Code of practice for design and construction of pile foundations (Bored cast in-situ
concrete piles)

Design philosophy :
The Abutment/ pier shaft is desgned as compression member with biaxial bending. For design of pile cap, bending theory is
used, to find out reactions over piles it is assumed as that pile cap behave as rigid member, dirt wall is designed as
compression member with uniaxial bending.
