essential question that you
want students to come away
with? In other words, what,
aside from the standard and
our objective, will students
understand when they finish
this lesson?)

Essential Question: Ants are insects that display hard work. How do ants use their
abilities to work hard and survive in their habitat?

evidence that is important.

Rationale
Why are you teaching this
lesson?

This lesson is being taught to assist students with independent reading and improving
their reading skills. It is also being taught so they can practice independent writing skills
using text evidence.

Evaluation Plan- How will

you know students have
mastered your objectives?
Step-by-Step Plan
(What exactly do you plan to
do in teaching this lesson? Be
thorough.

Once students have completed their critical thinking question by summarizing and
writing the answer using text evidence, we will have a class discussion and I will collect
their papers to grade their work.
1. Students will be explained the lesson, and the objectives will be covered. The students
will then be asked what the objectives of this lesson are to review.
2. Students will be presented the reading material.
3. Teacher will read first 3 paragraphs aloud, students will share read with the teacher for
the next 2 paragraphs, and the last paragraph will be independent reading for students.
4. Teacher will present the essential question/ task for students.
5. After, teacher will give students an example and write it down on the ELMO so
students can see. Teacher will then ask for an example from the students and write it
down on the ELMO. She will explain that the answer to the question will include at least 3
main-point through text evidence.
6. Teacher will give students time to work on their own silently.
7. Teacher will then have students discuss in their groups/ with their shoulder partner 3
different topics they wrote about.
8. Teacher will then review, and have a class discussion, question (if the information the
students are giving is evidence directly from the text). Explain that this essential question
would be the introductory paragraph of an essay.
9. Have students turn in work to evaluate and give a grade.

Accommodations
What students need specific
accommodation?

ELL (English Language Learners) students: accommodation for ELL students will be more
time to process the information.
Allowing peers to help them with underlining and taking notes to write about.
Assistance from teacher by providing the 3 main ideas of the story, depending on their
process time.
If ELL students still do not understand, allow them to all go to the table and teacher will
assist them while other students are writing (working on essential question) silently.
