Title: Weather: Water Cycle

Grade/Subject Area: 1st Grade Science

Teacher Website: Class Website
Description: In this lesson, you will learn about the different stages of the
water cycle and what occurs at each stage.
Prerequisite skills:
Different types of weather
Where water comes from
Grouping size: due to the number of tablets/computers available will
determine if we need groups or not. If there isn't a device for everyone, we'll
work in groups of 2-4 for this lesson.
Goals and objectives:
Students will be able to know the 4 different stages of the water cycle
Students will be able to know what happens at each stage of the water
cycle
Students will understand that water is always moving
Students will understand different forms of liquids in relation to the water
cycle
Content/Technology Standards:
E.ES.01.21 Compare daily changes in the weather related to temperature
(cold, hot, warm, cool); cloud cover (cloudy, partly cloudy, foggy); precipitation
(rain, snow, hail, freezing rain); wind (breezy, windy, calm).
E.ES.01.22 Describe and compare weather related to the four seasons in
terms of temperature, cloud cover, precipitation, and wind.

Standard V.2 The Hydrosphere All students will demonstrate where water is
found on earth; describe the characteristics of water and how water moves;
and analyze the interaction of human activities with the hydrosphere.
PK-2.CI.1. use a variety of digital tools (e.g., word processors, drawing tools,
simulations, presentation software, graphical organizers) to learn, create, and
convey original ideas or illustrate concept
PK-2.RI.1. interact with Internet based resources
PK-2.CT.2. use digital resources (e.g., dictionaries, encyclopedias, search
engines, web sites) to solve developmentally appropriate problems, with
assistance from teachers, parents, school media specialists, or student
partners

Anticipatory Set: Lets learn about the water cycle! We will be learning about the
3 parts.
Interactive Activities:
Moodle Poll (bolded answers are correct) Choose the best answer for
each question:
o What are the 3 stages to the water cycle?

Evaporation
Condensation
Precipitation
All of them
o What is evaporation?
Sun heats water
Water vapor forms clouds
Clouds get too full and water falls from clouds to Earth
o What is condensation?
Sun heats water
Water vapor forms clouds
Clouds get too full and water falls from clouds to Earth
o What is precipitation?
Sun heats water
Water vapor forms clouds
Clouds get too full and water falls from clouds to Earth
o What is precipitation?
Rain
Snow
Hail

Sleet
All of them
o Does water ever stop moving in the water cycle?
Yes
No
Moodle glossary
o Instructions:
Children will take each stage (given to them) of the water cycle
and create a visual glossary.
A visual glossary is where they can use pictures to help
them remember what each stage is and what happens
at each stage.

Special Resources/Assistance
Room parent and/or parapros are to help read to students (if needed) what
they are to do.
If possible, try to have reading buddies help out their buddy with this
activity by reading the directions and questions for them. They also can help type
in their little buddys answers if writing is involved.

Summative Product:
In groups of no more than 4 students, they are to work together to produce
a video/song about the water cycle and adding it to Moodle (with help from older
reading buddy, parapro, or room parent for filming and submission)
Video must include:
o The 3 names of the stages of the water cycle
Draw poster to explain
Show direction of cycle with arrows
o What happens to water at each stage of the water cycle
Talk about each stage
Example:
Evaporation
o Sun heats water and makes vapor
o List 3 types of precipitation
Can draw on poster
o Answer the following questions:
Does water ever stop or does it keep moving in the water cycle
Why is it called the water cycle?
