Book Selection & Rationale

What book have you
selected for this read aloud?
Why have you selected this
book (how does it support
your objective/purpose)? Will
you be reading the whole
book (why/why not)?
Step-by-Step Plan
1. Describe how you will
preview the book and setup the read aloud.

The 7 Habits of Happy Kids by Sean Covey, illustrated by Stacy Curtis

This book offers many principles that kids can apply to life lessons. This book has
many chapters that focus on multiple principles. Students need to build classroom
community and this book provides universal and timeless principles that will equip
students to communicate with their peers, teachers, and parents. This book is
relatable to the students, as it provides memorable characters that the students can
relate to their lives. The students will be able to identify the characters strengths and
compare them to their own personal strengths. I will be reading this one chapter of
the book, which is The Big Bad Badgers (pp. 69-77 ) because the chapter that
focuses on team building and collaboration.
1.The teacher will connect to students prior knowledge/experience by asking these
questions:
What sports do you play or have watched before?
Do any of you play sports on team? Maybe a pick-up game? What is a
pick-up game?

Remember you may include

(but are not limited to):
Introduce the book and
complete a picture walk
Connect to students' prior
knowledge/experiences
Introduce key vocabulary
Introduce the
objective/purpose of the
lesson (the skill being
developed)

2. Describe the purposeful

questions you will ask.
Make sure they are related
to your objective/purpose.
Remember you should:
name the points in text
where you will stop
name the questions you
will ask (keeping in mind
the objective/purpose of
your lesson and higher
order thinking question
stem starters)
describe the structures you
will use to allow students
time to think and share
their thoughts
describe how you will bring
students back together to

Have you ever had a ball hog? Or maybe youre the ball hog? Does that
get annoying?

The teacher will then make a connection between the students answers of past
knowledge/experience to the book saying, "just like _____, we are going to read about
a similar experience that involves sports and teamwork.
This story is called The Big Bad Badgers by Sean Covey
Teacher says to listen and think about what the characters do and how they act with
one another as team members.
2. Ask the students:
Pg. 68- Have you ever had someone encourage you to so something that you didnt
think you could do, just like the friends? Or have you ever encouraged someone else
when they didnt think they could do something, like Sophie?
Give students time to think about answer before raising hand. Have just a few
students answer
Pg. 71- What did Sophie mean when she said if we play as a team? Arent they
already on a team?
They are on a team again the Badgers. What did Sophie mean
when she said if we play as a team?
Have students think about the question in their head
Think, pair, share. Students will turn to a partner and each will discuss
After students seem to be done discussing, the teacher has a few pairs share
Teacher says, Lets read more to find out how they play as a team.
Pg. 71- What are the assets that Sophie said to use?
Think pair share
Extend the question by asking what some of the students strengths are.
Teacher jumps back into the book by saying, I want to see how they used their
individual strength to help the team!
Pg. 73 What does original mean? Sophie says, I just thought of a really original
play, What do you think original means?

describe the way you will
utilize an anchor chart (if
applicable)
3. Describe how students
will summarize and share
their thoughts about the
story. How will you wrap-up
the story with students? How
will they share their thoughts
or feelings about the story?
How will you lead students
into the assessment (i.e. after
reading activity)?

Give students time to think

Call on a few students to answer
Provide feedback so they can better understand the passage and meaning of
creativity involving many people.

3. Once the chapter is done, the teacher will ask the students and a few will share
with the whole group:
Why did the team get so far behind by halftime?
Would you say Sophie pulled out her teammates strengths or weaknesses?
What are some ways that the team was able to win the game? What made the
difference?
Who scored the winning goal?
To connect the story principles to the students, the teacher will have them do a team
building activity. It is called Count Up. This teamwork activity requires the group to
count to a given number (number of students). The group can't say anything and
students cannot say their number consecutively if they are next to each other. If two
people say the same number at the same time then the group starts over.
If they keep messing up, the teacher will step in to remind them to use some
teamwork skills as to communicate with each other non-verbally.
The teacher will highlight what worked well and what did not.
After this activity the students will return back to their desk.

Evaluation Plan How will
you know students have
mastered your objective(s)?
Describe the afterreading/assessment activity
students will complete and
how it shows if they have
mastered your objective.
*Include a copy of any
materials (e.g. handouts,
organizers, etc.) that you
are giving to students.

The teacher will be able to determine students mastery of teamwork characteristics

by having students fill out a chart. The teacher will have created a chart on chart
paper. Each group will receive 4 sticky notes of different colors. The teacher will
explain that the students will label the chart with sticky notes to tell what a great
team player is, does, says, and is not. The colors coordinate to the different sections
on the chart. The students are to discuss in their group their answers and make an
agreed decision for a characteristic of a great team player. This will further help
students work as group and assign roles. Once they have written their names on the
back, talked about their answers, and written them down, one group member will
stick the sticky notes on the chart paper. The teacher will review the student answers
with the class and ask if every one agrees and has anything to add to it.
With the completed chart, students will show they applied what they learned from the
story, after-reading activity, and group collaboration that can then transfer over from
being a great team player to being a great classmate.
