INTRODUCTION
Swacch Bharat Abhiyan is a cleanliness campaign run by the government of
India and initiated by honourable Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
Swacch Bharat Abhiyan is also called as the Clean India Mission or the Clean
India Drive or Swacch Bharat Campaign.
It is a national level campaign run by the Indian government covering 4041
statutory towns to make them clean.
This campaign involves the construction of latrines, promotion of sanitation
programmes in rural area, cleanliness of streets and roads in order to change the
infrastructure of the country which will eventually facilitate its growth.
This campaign was officially launched by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on
145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd October 2014 at Rajghat,
New Delhi, where PM Narendra Modi himself wielded broom and cleaned the
road.
The mission will be in force till 2nd October 2019.

OBJECTIVES

Construction of Individual, cluster or community toilets.


To eliminate or reduce open defecation.
Eradication of manual scavenging.
Modern and scientific municipal solid waste management.
To effect behavioral change regarding healthy sanitation
practices.
Generate awareness about sanitation and its linkage with
public health.
To lay water pipeline in all villages, ensuring water supply to
all households by 2019.
To create an enabling environment for private sector
participation in Capex
(capital expenditure) and Opex (operation and maintenance)
Capacity Augmentation for Urban Local Bodies.
Recruitment of proper dedicated ground staff to bring about
behavioural change and also promotion of latrine use.
Solid and liquid waste management through Gram Panchayat.

Ministries involved in project Ministry of rural development, ministry of
urban development, Ministry of drinking water and sanitation, Public Sector
Undertakings, Corporations, NGOs, State Government etc.
Purpose of Project To make India a filth free country in five years, To
construct community and public toilets in rural and urban areas, To provide
running water supply, To treat waste water, To keep roads, pavements and
localities clean.

AREAS
The mission aims to cover 1.04 crore households, Provide 2.5
Lakh community toilets, 2.6 Lakh public toilets, and a solid
waste management facility in each town.
Under the programme, Community toilets will be built in
residential areas where it is difficult to construct individual
household toilets. Public toilets will also be constructed in
designated locations such as tourist places, markets, bus
stations, railway stations etc.
The programme will be implemented over a 5 year period in
4,401 towns. Of Rs 62,009 crore likely to be spent on the
programme, the centre will pitch in Rs 14,623 crore. Of the
centres share of Rs 14,623 crore, Rs 7,366 crore will be spent
on solid waste management, Rs 4,165 cores on individual
household toilets, Rs 1,828 crore on publi
