Social Study

The children will:


formulate questions to gather information
about culture and art
describe similarities and differences between
themselves and others through the exploration
of cultures and arts
identify and compare traditions and cultural
artifacts observed by others in the class
use a variety of sources to gain information
about culture and art from both a historical and
a cultural perspective

Mathematics
Children will continue to build on their number
knowledge and strategies by:
Read, write, compare and order numbers
to 20.
Using counting on and counting back as a
strategy
Creating a repeating pattern. Identifying
the repeating element, explaining the rule
and extending the pattern using shapes,
symbols, numbers sounds and
movements.
Exploring sequential patterns by counting
in ones (a growth pattern i.e. one more
and one less), 2s and 10s.
Children will develop their understanding of
geometry by:
Classifying or sorting objects by their
characteristics. (shape, size, colour,
texture, weight, and temperature)
Justifying why they have sorted objects in
the way they have and being encouraged
to develop increasingly sophisticated
classifications such as colour and size.

Language
The children will explore traditional stories from
around the world to enhance their understanding of
how cultures are expressed through literature and
drama.
The writing focus is narrative retell. The children will
learn to plan, illustrate and share their work. They
will:
enjoy writing and value their own
efforts.
generates own ideas for writing using simple
sentence structures.
read their own writing to the teacher and to
classmates,
participate in shared and guided writing.
experiments with writing conventions, e.g.
capitals, full stops.
create illustrations to match their own written
text.
demonstrate an awareness of the conventions of
written text, for example, sequence, spacing,
directionality.
Participates in guided literature discussions-asks
questions, listens and responds appropriately
Demonstrates an understanding of letter/sound
relationships.
participate in learning engagements involving
reading aloudtaking roles and reading dialogue,
repeating refrains from familiar stories, reciting
poems.

Art/Drama

Throughout this Unit of Inquiry we will be exploring how


we can express ourselves through verbal and non-verbal
forms of communication. We will also be looking at how
our physicality can influence the way we see each other
and how music impacts on the way we feel.

Physical Education

Fitness: the children will understand how exercises help us


stay healthy and the role of a heart and lungs in our body.
Team games (basketball, volleyball, handball, hockey): the
children will develop ball control skills and play games
with rules.
