1.

There are about 35 different species in the dog family.

a)

The diagram shows three different species within the dog family. These are a fox, a jackal
and a wolf.

i)Describe one way, shown in the diagrams, in which a wolf differs from the fox and the jackal.

Foxes, jackals and wolves are classfied by scientist as three separate species. Explain
why?

b)

Modern domestic dogs are thought to have descended from wolves. Humans may have
caught and tamed and kept them to help with hunting.
Modern domestic dogs are thought to have evolved about 15000 years ago.
The diagram shows four breeds of modern domestic dogs. Although they look different, they
all belong to the same dog species which scientists called canis familiaris.

i)What word is used to describe the differences between animals of the same species

ii)

Wild dog species such as the foxes and jackals are all very similar to each other. Modern
domestic dogs have many differences in size, shape and colour. Explain why.

The drawing below shows an old and a modern variety of wheat plant.

Glucose produced by the wheat plants is used:

To provide energy for growth

To make cell walls

Prepared by: Sumathi Murti

To make starch which is stored in the grain
Give one reason why modern wheat plants with short stalks can store more starch in the
grain. Use the drawings and information.

b)

A plant breeder wats to use the selective breeding to produce corn with short stalks and a
high mass of grains. He could use the following varieties of corn.

i)

What would the plant breeder need to do to make sure he always produced corn with
short stalks and a high mass of grains.
Describe the three steps the breeder must use.

piglets?
i)

Tick the two correct boxes.

ii)

When pigs reproduce, two cells join together. What is this process called?
Tick the correct box

The quagga is an extint animal that lived in Africa. Quaggas belonged to the same group
as zebras. The drawing below show a zebra and a quagga.

Prepared by: Sumathi Murti

a)

Zebras and quaggas used to breed with each other. The offspring contained a
combination of both zebra and quagga genes ( genetic information ). How were the
zebra and quagga genes passed from the parents to their offsprings?
