FORESTRY GUIDED NOTES

1. Selective because it doesnt harm the environment to Strip it doesnt harm the
environment to that extent trees can still grow back.
2. CLEAR CUTTING
-Disadvantages- Entire communities usually displaced or destroyed causes soil erosion
-Advantages- Cost efficient more money!
STRIP CUTTING
-Disadvantages- Habitat fragmentation, not making as much money
-Advantages- Helps if there is any type of mass movement trees can stop it
SELECTIVE LOGGING
-Disadvantages- Machinery disturbs forest interior, Expensive Process, More dangerous
for loggers
-Advantages- More biodiverse uneven-aged growth, Less overall environmental damage
Seed -Tree and Shelter Wood Approaches

Seed Tree: Small numbers of mature, healthy trees to reseed the area

Shelter wood: Involves leaving a few mature trees standing to provide shelter for
seedlings
-Disadvantages- As with clear-cutting, leads to mostly even-aged regrowth
-Advantages- Less Damaging than clear-cutting
3. They help heal some diseases and other things for biodiversity. They are significant
because of their high biodiversity and they often home endangered species.
4a. Ground fires- Fires that burn material underground but may emerge to surface fires.
Surface Fires- Burn debris close to the ground and can be of benefit to the forest.
(Wildfires) Crown Fires- Extremely hot fires that often destroy large trees and forests
4b. Controlled Burns are designed to remove excess flammable material in a section of
forest of, forest, and so significantly reduce the risk of wildfire. This is done in colder
seasons where the risk of the burn becoming uncontrollable is reduced. The controlled
burns also help to stimulate new growth.
