This document reviews literature on alternative aggregate materials that can be used for hollow blocks. Specifically, it discusses how shell byproducts from mussels, oysters, and scallops have been used in industries like construction as replacements for materials like lime and cement. Some researchers have also looked at using shell wastes as a replacement material in construction.

The concepts of eco-friendly building are getting more attention today. The use of materials from natural sources is an alternative to the realization of the green building concept. Shell by-products (such as mussel shell, oyster shell, scallop shell, etc.) have long been applied in industries. (Barros et al 2009). For example, in the construction of roads, the replacement of industrial lime, ash cements fertilizer, lime agent, moisturizers and tile. Other than that the uses of shell wastes as replacement material also have been increasing now. Some of the reseachers (Malaysian Journal of Civil Engineering, 2013)
