Year of the Eucharist + Diocese of Joliet

I urge you with all the strength of my soul to approach the Eucharistic Table as often as possible. Feed on this Bread
of the Angels from which you will draw the strength to fight inner struggles, the struggles against passions and against all
adversities, because Jesus Christ has promised to those who feed themselves with the most Holy Eucharist, eternal life
and the necessary graces to obtain it. And when you become totally consumed by this Eucharistic Fire, then you will be
able to thank with greater awareness the Lord God who has called you to be part of his flock and you will enjoy that
peace which those who are happy according to the world have never tasted. Because true happiness, young people,
does not consist in the pleasures of the world and in earthly things, but in peace of conscience which we can have only if
we are pure in heart and in mind. (Frassati, Letter to the Catholic Youth of Pollone, July 29, 1923)

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati is a saint for the modern world and especially for the youth of the new millennium. He was
born on Holy Saturday, April 6, 1901 in Turin, Italy. Pier Giorgio was a model of virtue, a "man of the beatitudes," as
Pope John Paul II called him at the saint's beatification ceremony in Rome on May 20, 1990. He was described by
friends as "an explosion of joy." His sister, Luciana, says of her brother in her biography of him, "He represented the fin-
est in Christian youth: pure, happy, enthusiastic about everything that is good and beautiful." Pier Giorgio admired the
beauty of the arts and opera, and he prayed daily, offering, among other prayers, a daily rosary on his knees by his bed-
side. Often Pier Giorgios agnostic father would find him asleep in this position.

"He gave his whole self, both in prayer and in action, in service to Christ," Luciana Frassati writes. After Pier Giorgio be-
gan to attend Jesuit school as a boy, he received a rare permission in those days to take communion daily. For Frassati,
Christ was the answer. Therefore, all of his action was oriented toward Christ and began first in contemplation of Him:
"Sometimes he passed whole nights in Eucharistic adoration." Motivated by the Eucharist to put his faith into action, Pier
Giorgio actively participated in various Catholic social movements and began to ardently serve the needy and the poor
as a third order Dominican in 1922 at the age of 21.

Pier Giorgio Frassati died in Turin at the age of 24. In his short life he accomplished more acts of love then most people
accomplish in a lifetime. His parents were amazed at their sons funeral as thousands lined the streets of Turin to show
their love and gratitude to such a selfless soul. Pier Giorgio responded to Gods call to reach out to the poor, the outcast,
and the forgotten, to bring Gods love and light to the world. The fire of his zeal was enkindled by the fire of the Eucha-
rist. Christ gave Blessed Pier Giorgio the ears to hear and eyes to see what many of us fail to comprehend, which is the
presence of God, especially in the Eucharist and one another.

Pier Giorgio Frassati's mortal remains were found incorrupt in 1981. Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati's feast day is July 4,
the anniversary of his death.

Dear Friends in the Diocese of Joliet,

Fathers Day is a special day to remember our fathers. But it is also a time to remember another kind of father, our di-
ocesan priests. You may not realize that priests normally retire at 70 years of age, and even after official retirement,
many continue working by celebrating the liturgy at parishes, ministering to the sick, or providing spiritual counseling.
Besides their social security checks, the priests are eligible for a small diocesan pension which helps pay for their living
costs during retirement. There is a retirement facility for priests in our diocese, but retired priests may choose to live on
their own. Their pensions and social security are barely sufficient to keep up with increases in every day expenses, such
as food, housing and transportation costs.

The Diocese of Joliet has a Priests Pension Fund, but as with many retirement plans, this fund is in need of being forti-
fied. We know that many of you have also experienced the strain of reduced retirement income.

To strengthen the Priests Pension Fund, a second collection will take place across the diocese on Fathers Day week-
end this year and in the future so that parishioners can show their appreciation and love for our prieststhose already
retired and those who will retire in the future. This collection should not be confused with the collection for the Retire-
ment Fund for Religious, which occurs during December and assists religious men and womennuns, brothers and
priests belonging to religious orders. That collection does not benefit retired diocesan priests.

For the past year, we have been observing a special Year for Priests, which Pope Benedict XVI established as a way to
inspire spiritual perfection in priests and to remind the faithful to pray for priests. It seems fitting that as the Year for
Priests ends this June, our dioceses Year of the Eucharist has just begun. Your generous response to this collection
would be a wonderful symbol of the gratitude you feel for priests who have and continue to nourish your life of faith
highlighted by their celebrating the Eucharistwhile also serving the Lord so faithfully.

On behalf of the priests of our diocese, We are grateful for your prayers and your generosity during the second collection
on Fathers Day weekend for our Priests Pension Fund. Please be assured of our prayers for you.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend J. Peter Sartain Most Rev. Joseph M. Siegel

Accomplishments of the Past Year

As the church fiscal year heads to a close, the Administration Commission would like to let the Parish know what has
been accomplished, and what is still waiting to be done. This week- what has been done, in and around the church and
school campus over the last 12 months:

The bell tower electronics were repaired and replaced;

Guidelines for the use of the PLC and school gym, by groups other than church ministries or events, were drawn
up, and agreed to;
The Ten Commandment Monument was installed;
The commemorative brick reflection space was supported, and installed around the monument;
The parking lot was patched and seal-coated;
The rectory siding and fascia were replaced after some storm damage;
The PLC thermostat was replaced with one that is more responsive, and user friendly;
The churchs 30 year old air-conditioning compressor and coil were replaced.

The commission wishes to thank everyone for their help and support for every project. Each of these projects cost
money. Some money was donated by an individual or group, specifically for a particular project. Some money was col-
lected through special collections- most notably, and memorably, for the air-conditioning unit last July. Some money was
contributed on a weekly or monthly basis- using the gold envelopes. And the commemorative brick sale was very well
received, and helped raise a net $17,000 for other various projects. We also received many donations of time, effort,
and materials, for many things, great and small during the year.

Next week, we will give a glimpse into the year ahead.

Thank you!

The Administration Commission
