High school dances are a fun way for students to take a break from their busy

schedules. One of the most important dances is the Prom.

Prom takes place in the spring, and is the last big celebration before the end of
the school year. Prom is usually only for juniors and seniors, and so for the
seniors, it is probably the last time they will see all their friends together once
they graduate. There is a "Prom Court" and usually at the dance, the students
vote on their King and Queen, and then they crown the winners in front of
everyone.
There are a lot of things to do an the day of the Prom. In the morning, girls go
to a hair salon and they might get their make-up done, or go home and do it
themselves. Many teens like to go to the prom together. Sometimes, people like
to rent a limo for the evening so they don't have to drive around town
themselves.
Teens who go with a friend usually like to dress in similar colors. They also give
each other flowers to wear. Boys wear them an their tuxedos, and girls wear
them an their wrists. The flowers match the color of the girls' dresses, and the
boys' ties. When their dates arrive, they all take pictures together, and then
leave to have dinner at a fancy restaurant before the dance.
After dinner, they go to the dance. It is sometimes help in the school's gym, or
at another place like a formal hall in a hotel. The dance committee decides on a
theme and colors for the Prom and then they decorate in that theme.
Depending on the theme of the dance, there will be different things to do there.
Students can play games, or an artist paints their picture, and a photographer
takes their picture, Proms are a lot of fun, and most people remember them for
the rest of their lives.

AMAZING ASTRONAUTS
ALAN SHEPARD
On May 5th, 1961, he went halfway around the Earth in a spaceship called
Freedom 7. This made him the first American in space. He went into space
again in 1971. This time he went on the Apollo 14 mission and he landed on the

moon. When he was on the moon, Shepard took a golf club with him and
actually hit a few golf balls out into space.
JOHN GLENN
He was the first American to go completely around the Earth in a spaceship
called friendship 7, in 1962. Soon after this, he retired from NASA. In 1974,
Glenn stated his political career, and was a U.S. Senator for 25 years for the
state of Ohio. In 1998, he became the oldest person to go into space. He went
on the space shuttle Discovery, at the age of 77.
NEIL ARMSTRONG
He became the commander of the ship Apollo II, and went all the way around
the moon in 1968. In July of 1969, Armstrong took his Apollo ship to the moon
again, and this time he landed it. He became the first person to walk on the
moon and that's when he said the famous words: "That's one small step for
man, one giant leap for mankind." He and his crewmate Buzz Aldrin stayed on
the moon for about two and a half hours.

Charles Feltman opened up a hot dog stand at New York City's Coney Island
amusement park in 1870. He stated selling sausages in bread rolls. People
could eat them as they walked around the park. Hot dogs are usually about six
inches in length, though people also love "foot-long" hot dogs. Some of the
most common ingredients used as toppings are: mustard, ketchup, and chili. As
everyone knows, you can't go to a baseball game without having a "dog" for
lunch!

AUSTRALIA
In Australia, the classic meat pie is the national dish. Australians first started
eating it in Melbourne in 1850 but the recipe came from Britain. British people
used the meat that was left over from the "Sunday roast" to make pies. Today,
Australians eat about 260 million pies a year and there are even national
competitions to find the best one. Meat pies are very popular to eat during

sports games like rugby, cricket, and Australian football, because they are
small and easy to carry around.

SCOTLAND
One of Scotland's traditional foods is haggis even though the recipe probably
came from Scandinavia. It looks like a large round sausage and is very popular
in Scottish restaurants, and around the world. In fact, many Scottish fast food
restaurants make a "haggis burger," which is a slice of haggis that is grilled or
friend, and served on a hamburger bun. The Scottish eat haggis to celebrate
Robert Burns' birthday and there is a World Haggis Hurling Championship every
year, where people throw haggis as far as they can.
