Record keeping: Tracking student learning

Chapter 9
Preliminary decisions
3 decisions to make before beginning record keeping.
1.
Which information will be used formatively and which will be used
summatively. (keep in mind that sometimes the uses overlap)
2.
Decide what formative assessment information it makes sense to record.
3.
Think about what formative information students would benefit from
tracking.
Differentiating information for Formative or Summative use
Formative assessments events can look like any of the following:

Work students do for practice

Work students turn in for feedback from you or other students
Evidence students use for self-assessment and goal setting

Summative assessments are those after the learning has taken place, and it helps to
report level of achievement. This information usually takes the form of summary
number, symbol phrase, or grade.
Deciding where you will keep the information
Paper or computer program?
Remember; you will need to be able to differentiate formative and summative data.
Hardcopy options include the following;

Formative and summative data clearly labeled and recorded together

Formative and summative data recorded separately

Decisions that must be made include;

Hardcopy records- How will the data be organized for each student
One rule to keep in mind when making decisions, form follows function. How you want
to use the information should drive your decision about how to organize it.
3 record-keeping guidelines that apply to both formative and summative assessments
1.
2.
3.

Organize entries by learning target

Track information about work habits and social skills separately.
Record achievement information by raw score, if practical.
