At the end of the lesson, at least 85% of the student have mastery level to:
a. name the man behind the classification scheme;
b. characterize the four types of Hubble classification scheme; and
c. illustrate the classification of galaxy.

Procedure

Teachers Activity

Students Activity

A. Daily routine
1. Greetings
Good morning class!

Good Morning Maam!

2. Prayer

Let us pray

(One student will lead the prayer)

3. Checking of attendance
Say present as I call your name.

( A student will raise his/her hand

and say present upon hearing
his/her name)

4. Classroom management
Please pick up the pieces of paper under
your chair

(The students will pick up the pieces

of paper around them)

B. Motivation
Before we continue with our lesson, I made
here a puzzle and then look for the words that

C. Lesson Proper
Who was responsible for the classification of
galaxy?
Who is Edwin Hubble?

Edwin Hubble

Edwin Hubble was an American

astronomer who developed the
classification scheme of galaxies in

1926.
What are those classification scheme?
The first one is the spiral galaxy. It
has an outstretched, curving arms
suggestive of a whirlpool or a
pinwheel.
And the example of this is NGC 3310.What do
you notice on the figure?
The disk of the galaxy contains the
spiral arms.
The disk is a region of star formation and has a
great deal of gas and dust.

Figure 1
The next one is?

NGC 1365 is an example of this galaxy. What

can you say?

There are distinct dark lanes of obscuring dust

in the bar pointing toward the bulge.

The second one is the barred-spiral

galaxy. It shows the same spiral
structure as normal spirals and also
a prominent bar through the
nucleus.

The spiral arms emerge from the

end of the bar."

Figure 2

Third one is the?

Third one is the elliptical galaxy. It
shows no spiral structure and can
vary from almost round to almost
cigar shaped.

M87 is an example of this galaxy. It has very

little gas and dust. It contains the old and red
stars.

Figure 3
What is the last one?

Why do you think it has irregular shape?

Last one is irregular galaxy. It is

neither spiral nor elliptical and has
any number of shapes.
It is the product of two galaxies
colliding to each other.

Example of this is M82. This is a very luminous

galaxy. It is a star-burst galaxy.

Figure 4

D. Generalization
Again, who developed the classification of
galaxies?
In what year?

Edwin Hubble
1926

How are the galaxies classified?

Galaxies are classified according to

their shape.

Those are the spiral, barred-spiral,

elliptical and irregular galaxy.

IV.

Evaluation
In a crosswise yellow pad paper, enumerate and describe the classification of
galaxies.

1.
2.
3.
4.
V.

Spiral galaxy- it has an outstretched curving arms.

Barred-spiral galaxy- it has spiral arms emerged from the end of the bar.
Elliptical galaxy- it has a round shaped.
Irregular galaxy- it is not spiral nor elliptical.
Assignment

In a short bond paper, illustrate the Hubble tuning-fork diagram.
