Question 1: Gender

The reason I asked this question was to ascertain who my target audience
consists of; the results showed that the majority of answers were female. This is
useful as it will allow me to design my magazine to better suit my target
audience. To summarize; a male dominated target audience would have a
magazine with a masculine aesthetic, whereas a female dominated target
audience would have a magazine with a more feminine aesthetic. Gender also
ties into representation. Having a primarily female target audience means my
magazine is now aimed towards a niche marked. This is interesting information
as most rock music magazines are masculine and are dominated by male bands
and male fans. Therefore, one could say that these results are not concordant
with the codes and conventions of rock music magazines.
2. Preferred music genre

Naturally, the genre of my music magazine is rock. However, there are many
sub-genres of rock, and most people tend to have more than one music genre
that they like. Through asking this question, I was able to find out which subgenres of rock specifically people liked the most, and may be able to incorporate
certain, small aspects of other genres as well to extend my target audience a bit.
It is not uncommon for genres in music magazines to crossover or become less
specific.

3. Preferred font
Through asking this question, I was able to gain insight on what my target
audience thought of the possible fonts for the masthead of my magazine, which
is a crucial and important aspect of any magazine. The results showed that font
2 was more popular; therefore, I now know which font my target audience likes
more.
4. Rock bands
I used this question In my questionnaire as I thought it was important to be even
more specific in finding out what my target audience enjoyed; so I took bands
from several different sub-genres of rock and asked my target audience to
answer if theyd heard the band, if they havent heard the band, if they neither
liked nor disliked them, if they disliked the band or if they liked the band. It also
showed me the amount of knowledge and variety my target audience had for the
rock genre as a whole, with some bands being lesser known than others.
5. Music magazine price
I gave a price range from under 1 to 5 and asked my target audience to pick
exactly how much they would be willing to pay for the magazine. The most
popular answer was 3 and this is effective as it is affordable for people of the
working class but also proves that it will make a profit for the company.
6. Reading magazines
This was a simple and broad question, and its only use was to find out how
familiar my target audience is with magazines, and therefore, the codes and
conventions of magazines.
7. Types of magazines
This is a lead on from question 6, expanding slightly. If someone within my target
audience does read magazines, what type? Music magazines arent the only
magazines that exist, nor are they the most popular. Its natural that people
should have other interests than music, but this will allow me to take certain
aspects of other genres and use them in my magazine to make it appeal more to
my target audience.

What went wrong?

Nothing; the sample pool from my target audience has given me an interesting
range of answers which will allow me to better my magazine using this
information gained. The only thing that could have been better was if I had a
larger sample or more in-depth questions to get more qualitative answers.
What are you now thinking of doing for your magazine?
I know for certain now that the specific genre my magazine will mainly focus on
is Rock, and the font that I am going to use as my masthead, and that the target
audience is primarily female.
