MID-TERM REQUIREMENTS FOR LEGAL PROFESSION (SECTION 1-E)
ATENEO DE MANILA LAW SCHOOL
SY 2016 2017

The mid-term exercises for the course will be experiential as well as theoretical. The
class shall divide itself into either groups of 7 or 5 (minimum number of members per
group), as to which the class beadle submit to the professor a list of all such groups
(with members indicated) c/o kusogitmambusao@gmail.com no later 14 October 2016.
The group grade will translate into the individual grades.

Each group shall interview a single practitioner (not presently employed with the
government or any private entity; neither must he or she be a partner or associate in a
law firm; also not related by blood or affinity/marriage to any group member), who has
been in the practice of law as a solo practitioner for at least 10 years. He or she must be
a licensed attorney in good standing. He or she must not be a graduate of the Ateneo
de Manila School of Law or the University of the Philippines College of Law. He or she
must not have gone through college or non-law graduate education in the University of
the Philippines (Diliman), Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, University
of Santo Tomas, and/or University of Asia & the Pacific. In this connection, the written
output below shall contain documentary proof (facsimile of any diploma, reproduction of
any graduation or other picture, etc.) of the fact that the subject lawyer has not gone
through any such schools.

The output to be submitted shall principally consist of: (a) the interview; (b) a narration
of a visit or walk-through in court, as described below; (c) a group reflection as inspired
by, at minimum, by Chapters 1 and 2, Code of Professional Responsibility and
Kalscheur SJs Ignatian Spirituality and the Life of the Lawyer: Finding God in All
Things - Even in the Ordinary Practice of Law; and (d) a one-page handwritten
individual reflection by each group member with a personal resolution or two
(expressing the action he or she is called to after the exercises). It is also required that
the submission will include photos showing ALL members of the group interviewing, and
accompanying to court, the lawyer (in lieu of photos, a group may opt for a short video
to be submitted together with the output).

The interview, the transcript of which shall be attached to the submitted output, shall
contain the following as minimum:

a brief history of how the lawyer went through law school and passing the
Bar, together will all the challenges and any significant events

a brief narration of the career of the lawyer as a solo practitioner, including


the ups and downs of said career

any ethical dilemma that the lawyer encountered in his or her career thus
far, and how he or she handled the said challenge

how the lawyer lived the following good habits or virtues - SOUND
JUDGMENT (Prudence), COURAGEOUS PERSEVERANCE (Fortitude),
MODERATION (Temperance), and RESPONSIBILITY (Justice) in the
course of practice

his or her advice for those wanting to become lawyers, and any wish that
the lawyer may have as to what should be taught in law schools.

Aside from the interview, each group shall also submit a narrative of a field or exposure
trip with the lawyer to any trial court hearing; 1 provided that: the group shall not get in the
way of the lawyer or any judge or court officer/employee in the course of such trip; nor
should the group in any way unduly interfere with the lawyers relations with any client;
and that the group shall always defer to the lawyer as to the manner of the walk-through
as well as obtain the permission of the court to observe any proceedings. The group
should be able to ask the lawyer about the proceedings and the many levels of
engagement that the lawyer will be having during that stint in court.

The interview and narrative abovementioned shall be followed by a comprehensive and


well-thought-of group reflection, which shall not fail to substantially cite relevant
canons, rules, and case rulings taken up thus far in the course. This reflection shall be
at least 7 pages in legal size bond paper, exclusive of any attachments or annexes.

To be appended, as mentioned above,to the group reflection shall be hand-written

focusing on what each one has learned from the exercises and stating a concrete and
doable resolution or two to be observed as a law student and later as a law practitioner.
The individual reflections shall be factored in the group grade, using the weakest link
approach or rule. Each individual reflection must be signed by the writer concerned.

It is advisable that the submissions take on a minimalist look. All the above constitute
the essential and minimum requirements for the project. Further matters of form or
substance shall be a matter of personal responsibility, The front or title page of the
entire output must bear the names and signatures of ALL the members of the group. 2

Deadline: 21 October 2016; no earlier than 6pm, no later than 8pm c/o Law School
staff.

To afford the groups more time for the exercises, there will be no formal classroom session on 14
October 2016. Instead, the professor shall be in the faculty area on that day from 4:30 6 pm for group
consultation (for this purpose, the class beadle shall bring the required faculty attendance sheet for
signature.)
