The 8th Annual Junior Professional Summit 2016: Risk and Crisis Management in the Hospitality
and Tourism Industry

On the 3rd of October 2016, the School of International Hospitality and Tourism
Management department of St. Dominic College of Asia celebrated its 8th annual general
assembly at the Sofitel Luxury Hotel Philippine Plaza in Pasay City, Manila. The theme for this
year's seminar is about the Risk and Crisis Management in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry.
Several guest speakers were invited to share their insights and knowledge with us, the future
hospitality professionals. One notable person for me is Mr. Anthony Reburiano who is an
alumnus of SDCA and is now a hotelier. Mr. Reburiano briefly spoke about his early days in his
career and was very inspiring when he talked about how he got to where he is right now and how
he was once a student just like the rest of us. Ever since my report about cruise ships back in my
first year in college, I somehow developed an interest in the cruise line industry. So when Chef
Jesus Enrique discussed the possible problems a person can encounter on board and what to do in
those kind of emergency situations, I was listening as intently as I could but all those terms (and
most likely, hunger) beat me out of it.
If the tourism students would pick who among the speakers were their favorite that would
definitely be Ms. Maria Loribel Malor Ulanday-Marco. It is a shame that Maam Malor was
only given a few minutes to discuss the risks in the airline industry though those few minutes
were enough to let us know the risk that the industry we chose can encounter. It is a must to take
safety precautions in our work field. Our main priority is to ensure the safeness of passengers
and to give them the utmost service we can offer. As a future professional, this seminar helped
raise to awareness in the hospitality and tourism industry and taught us to take the necessary
steps when faced in those emergency situations.

World Tourism

If I were to pick my favorite subject for this semester, that would be World Tourism. The
first reason is because of our ber adorable professor, sir Argel dela Cruz. There are no dull

destinations he's been to. Listening to sir Argel's stories

makes me feel a tad bit closer to the country that we were discussing (probably because the
stories I've heard were first hand). I don't think I would enjoy this subject as much as I do now if
it were a different professor.

The main reason why I chose World Tourism as my favorite subject is because this it
reminded me of the reason why I chose my course now which is the Tourism Management
course. I have always been fascinated with the different cultures, traditions, languages, history
and food of all the countries around the world. I'd really love to explore the world someday. I am
in love with the idea of going to places that I can only see now in pictures and videos. I'd love to
meet people from different nations, converse in their mother tongue and savour all the variety of
flavors their country can offer. I do have a long way to go to achieve my dreams but somehow

my desires are satisfied whenever I attend this class. World Tourism subject introduced me to
numerous countries in a more detailed manner. I was able to take a closer look on their country
and what can they offer as a potential tourist. I am thrilled to engage in an adventure to see the
beauty our world has to offer and not only enjoy myself but also share my knowledge and
experiences to future hospitality and tourism students like how our professors did with us. Best
of luck!

Basic Foreign Language French

My love and fondness of learning new languages is one of the major driving forces which
pushed me to pursue my course Tourism Management. Ever since I was little, I have always been
fascinated with how each country has their own unique language and set of alphabet. For me it
felt like they have their own special secret codes and that they were the only ones who could
decode them. I remember always wondering how these people from the different parts of the
world would be able to converse with each other. I am quite lucky that one of the two languages
my course offers is French. Before enrolling in this subject, the only French term I know was
bon voyage and au revoir plus some other culinary terms I learned from previous subjects.

Ms. Marie Marcelo is our instructor for this course and she is patient enough to teach us
the language in the pace that we are comfortable with. She is also encouraging in a way that she
would often give second chances whenever a French word is mispronounced. She also provides

handouts for our easier understanding and would often give exercises to further practice what we
learned for the day. Ms. Marcelo introduces the French language to us in a fun way where I dont
really feel the pressure to memorize a bunch of words. It is one of the few subjects where I
understand the fun in learning.

Bar Management and Beverage Studies

Our laboratory subject for this semester is Bar Management and Beverage Studieswhich
is instructed by Sir Christian Sidiangco. The subject was able to meet my expectations to it
which definitely involved some drinking. Though I dont have the desire to be a bartender in the
future, this subject introduced me to a new world that even as a Tourism Management student
should know. It is very interesting to learn the different varieties of beverages, where they
originated, the components of it and such.

It is safe to say that this is the hardest laboratory I have ever encountered in my three
years here in St. Dominic College of Asia. I know that we are being trained to hone our skills and
are always given more practical tests instead of written ones but this subject made me feel the
pressure and the fear of actually failing a subject which is a first for me. I do admit that this is not
my specialty and I dont expect stellar grades because I know my own capabilities. I just wish
that was more considerate and werent as stingy when it comes to grading. Its really hard to
express feelings, share your most honest opinion and say what you really thinkespecially now

that finals are coming up and Ive got eighty-one percent to fill for me to pass the subject. May
the odds be ever in my favor.

Entrepreneurship and Business Planning

I still remember the question our professor Maam Eleonor Aguilando (more familiar to
us as Maam Nhoriey) asked us in our first meeting, Why do you think you have this subject
even though you are not taking a business course? her answer is instilled in me. She said that a
person can only work for a certain amount of time and you cant just be an employee for the rest
of your life. It was a food for thought for me as I never really imagined myself having my own
business. If I ever decide to come up with my own business in the future, the things I learned
from this subject would be very essential. We were also able to differentiate the difference
between an entrepreneur and a businessman. Innovation is the key!

It is very helpful to have a module where there are step by step guide for us to follow and
to better understand. Maam Nhoriey explains every step in a way that is relatable to us and her
funny antics somehow makes the work lighter. Coming up with our own business plan is a good
exercise and experience today that would be an essential step that will help a lot in the future.
Hooray for good vibes

Logic

My younger brothers reaction when I told him that I have Logic this semester was,
Youll enjoy it. Its fun.. His remark made me look forward to the subject and mainly because
Psychology, one of our previous subject (and also a favorite of mine) is closely related to it.
Anticipation was built and expectations were high but I somehow ended with disappointment.
Mr. Briaflo Padua, our professor, is a kind person. He is also considerate but I personally find his
class a bit boring probably because its our last subject for the day and it even starts at six thirty
in the evening.

Aside from discussing the meaning of Logic and where it came from, we also tackled the
different kinds of it. The most memorable would probably be the Fallacies and Syllogism. There
were several kinds of fallacies which vary from, Fallacy of Equivocation to Argumentum ad
Hominem. Syllogisms were hard to understand at first because of the rules that are applied but
later become enjoyable to determine if the statement is valid or invalid. And with that, I therefore
conclude that there were times where the lessons were a pain to understand but still subject Logic
is valid.

Computer Concepts and Fundamentals

I am a computer illiterate; I admit to that. Maybe the lessons and exercises are quite basic
for others but I for me it is new and I find it very handy. Our professor for this subject is Mr.
Angelo Buan who is very nice and very considerate. He teaches us step by step and is quite
knowledgeable in his field. Technology is a huge part of our lives today especially to us
millennials. One couldnt even last a day without their gadgets in hand. Having at least the basic
knowledge is essential to us Tourism Management students as operations nowadays are more on
automatic type rather than in manual. In this subject we were taught of the different parts of the
computer, the difference between the software and hardware, who are the famous people who
contributed to the world of computers today. We were also taught of how to use the Microsoft
Word where the different functions are discussed. Its really funny as Im using the Word for as
long as I can remember but only now Ive known the functions and shortcut keys. Another lesson
we had was how to use the Microsoft Excel which can be used for various things like tabulations,
records and one can even make a graph from it for visual presentations. We are also currently
learning of making our own website or blog. I find it very amusing because we get to choose the
style, the colors etc. The lessons that we learned in this subject is something that we can apply in
our daily lives even after graduating.

Basic Statistics

We are very lucky to have Mr. Adrian Arevalo as our professor for this subject. Basic
statistics is an important element that would be convenient now that we are currently conducting
a thesis research. The lessons that we learned in this subject would be applied in the chapter
three, four and five of our thesis. Sir Adrian uses powerpoint presentations when he discusses his
lessons and sends the lessons to us right after. The lessons were kind of hard to understand at first
because of all the technical terms but improved much better later. I personally dont like anything
that has computations involved (just because I am quite bad with anything that has numbers in it)
but Sir Adrian explains his lessons in a way that is simple and easier to understand as he connects
his examples in everyday life.

We will be handing out survey questionnaires soon and with that we would be able to
apply the lessons we learned in his class. Formulas and tabulations are made easy making the
thesis work a little bit lighter.

In-house Service Training

Supervised by Maam Agnes Azul, the In-House Service Training Practicum A is our onthe-job training which consists of one hundred hours duty in the travel desk. In a week, we have
to serve at least five and a half hours. During our duty hours, we provided the accommodations,
food and beverage providers, tour operators, and transportation for the different provinces of
region one and two. Aside from that, we were asked to make our own tour packages which
include five day tours and five overnight tours complete with itinerary and costing for both
region one and two. Just like in a workplace, we also have our time cards. During our first and
second year, we get to experience what it feels like to be a tourist when we went to the Ilocos
Region and Palawan. This time around, we get to experience what it feels like to work in a travel
agency and to produce our tour packages. Aside from the packages, we are also required to
process NSO and Passport Applications. The most challenging part about the service training
would probably be the costing for the tour packages. Every peso counts that is why services
offered should be cheap but quality service at the same time. Something to consider is the price
reasonable? How many pax will be included? What type of target market would avail our
product and services? Overall, the experience we had with this service training is something that
we would encounter eventually when we enter the tourism industry.

Tourism Research Methods and Techniques

This is another subject handled by Mam Eleonor Aguilando, better known to as Mam
Nhoriey. In this subject, we were divided into groups of 3s and asked to come up with a thesis
research that is connected to our course, Tourism Management. Although Mam Nhoriey is our
professor in the subject, we have a thesis adviser who helps us with our research. We are
assigned under Mam Elsa Chico who knows a lot about our topic which is the Manila Film
Center. The instructions on what to do per chapter is clearly stated and materials are also handed
out. We also have our weekly consultation with our thesis adviser where she shares all of her
ideas with us. I think that teamwork is an essential element for a thesis group to work. Stress
from it could be lessen when cramming is not an option. I think that these kinds of researches
will be helpful not only to our fellow hospitality and tourism students but also to the community
and further improvement of our countrys tourism. I also hope that by the end of our thesis
research, it would have a positive effect on our chosen destination and eventually help boost the
tourism and economy of the Philippines.

Transportation Management

Another major subject that Sir Argel dela Cruz teaches, the Transportation Management
tackles the transportation service in the hospitality industry but mostly concentrated in the
Airlines. As a tourism management student, it is necessary for us to know how airline operations
work because it will be our future workplace after we graduate. In this subject, we have
discussed the modes of transportation which is by land, sea and air. The top twenty airports in the
world were also identified as well as the most dangerous airports because of the circumstances
where the structure was built. Hopefully, the renovation and rehabilitation proposal for Ninoy
Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 would go through as planned because the Philippines is
definitely behind when it comes to airports. First impressions lasts and it is a must for us to
further improve our airports for tourists to have a comfortable and convenient time during their
stay here. The last lesson we had was about ground handling procedures and what are the needs
of special passengers. We have also tackled the bill of rights of the passengers and the Freedom
of Air. As time goes by, I am learning my chosen industry in a more profound way. I look
forward to learning a lot about our industry.
