END-OF-YEAR
CHECKUP!
Weve had a
pretty nice 2016
together, but
surely there are
things we
at REDBOOK
can do better for
you. Dont hold
back: Go to
decembersurvey
.redbookmag
.com and tell us
exactly what
youre loving (and

issue. Just by
doing that, youll
be entered for a
chance to win
$5,000. And you
deserve every
penny of it, lady.

Y HUSBAND TURNED 40 this year, and to celebrate,

we went away together, something we almost
never manage to do (2017 #goals). I booked us a cabin
at a lovely resort in the Adirondacksan elegantly
old-school spot called The Pointand we arrived for
three days of canoeing, hiking, and delicious,
boozy meals. We unpacked our bags, gazed upon the
tranquil lake and discovered that we had no cell
service. If you stood near a rock halfway between our
room and the main lodge, you might get a signal,
maybe, but to truly connect with the outside world,
you had to wander down to the resorts oice
not exactly where we planned to spend our vacation.
My irst reaction? A wash of panic, honestly.
And then we just got over it, put our phones away,
and focused on the day and the scenery and each
other. Im not sure what was more luxurious: the
fancy accommodations or the lack of cell service.
Our rich, busy digital lives are great, and Im not advocating that we journey back to the
time when you sat by the landline waiting nervously for a call. Yet its also an insane
distraction. Do we really need to be liking every last Instagram post right this minute?
Must we respond to the hey there email from a friend within the hour? As nice as it
is to feel connected, all that contact is eroding any sense of being in the moment. Nancy
Colier, author of the new book The Power of Off, told us (on page 101): If we can resist the
urge to turn to our phones, well gain the strength, conidence, and wisdom that comes
from being interested in your own company. Meanwhile, Common Sense Media has
started, so smartly, the #DeviceFreeDinner challenge: You and your family pledge to eat
together without a phone or tablet hovering nearby, poised to interrupt Taco Tuesday.
Im completely in. (Their Family Starter Kit, available at commonsensemedia.org, gives
you a commitment form you ill out together: It makes it super-real!)
We will be exploring this topic more in the coming monthstheres so much
insightful stuf to report on, particularly where our kids are concerned. Im curious
about how you feel; please let me know (my contact info is at the bottom of this
page). In the meantime, I hope you have a wonderful holiday season, reveling in
the people you love, whether theyre in front of you or a phone call away. Thats the
best present of all, dont you think?

Good news/bad news here.

Theres not a single weight-lifting
move on this planet that spotreduces fat. But by building the
muscles around the triceps area,
like your shoulders and back, you
can create the appearance of
a slimmer upper arm. One of my
favorite moves for that is the
Lawn Mower: Facing a chair, put
your right knee on it, grab
the seat with your right hand so
youre bent over, and hold a
hand weight in your left. Pull the
weight up past your waist, as high
as you can. Do 3 sets of 12 to 15
reps on each side. Heidi Powell,

Roasted fruit feels so decadent,

and doesnt have a smidge of added
sugar. Try this: Toss red or purple
grapes in olive oil and sprinkle them
with salt and pepper on a baking
sheet. Roast in the oven at 425F
for 30 minutes until they turn
blistery and caramelized. While thats
happening, reduce a cup of red wine
in a saucepan on the stove to about
1/4 cup. If you want, you can add
cinnamon, cloves, and/or nutmeg,
along with a couple of strips of
orange or lemon zest. When thats
done, toss the roasted grapes
with the wine syrup and serve over
low-fat plain Greek yogurt. Its light,
delicious, and truly easier than pie!

With dry shampoo, you

cant just spray it on and
goyou need to work it into
your hair. So mist your
roots, wait 30 seconds to let
the powders and starches
absorb the oils and product
buildup on your scalp, then
massage a little with your
ngers. Lastly, run a brush
through your hair a few
times to remove most of the
dry shampooand the dirt.
I swear by Dove Refresh +
Care Dry Shampoo, which
has a nice, fresh scent and
doesnt leave behind any
white residue. Victoria

Do this to disguise dark circles

The trick with under-eye concealer is knowing not only where to put it but also
where not to, says Mally Roncal. Her easy technique maps it out perfectly.

ERES WHATS FRUSTRATING ABOUT DARK CIRCLES:

The less rest

you get, the worse they lookso you spread more concealer
under your eyes, but then it becomes obvious. Or, in the case of
our sleep-deprived model, Angela, a full-time working mom
to a 1-year-old, you give up and skip concealer entirely. Whats the
happy medium? For starters, you need a creamy formula. Then,
dab it only where there are shadows, not all over. I showed Angela
how its done, and just look at how bright-eyed she is now.
Makeup artist Mally Roncal works with stars like Beyonc and Jennifer Lopez and
is the founder of Mally Beauty cosmetics.

1 | MAKE A TRIANGLE
Choose a concealer
color thats slightly
warm and just one
shade lighter than
your skin. Apply it
with a small brush in
the shape shown
here; this will reflect
light up so your eyes
look open and awake.

2 | BLEND IT IN
Work the product
into your skin with
your ring finger using
a press-and-roll
motiondont rub,
which wipes away
the coverage. Then,
pat whats left on
your finger at the
inner corners of eyes.

3 | DO THE OUTSIDE
Skin tends to look
darker at the outer
corners of your
eyes, which drags
them down and
can make you appear
tired. To give your
eyes a lift, tap a bit
of the cover-up at
the outer corners
with your ring finger.

4 | DUST ON POWDER
Its key to helping
your concealer stay
put and not settle
into lines. Very gently,
pull down your
under-eye skin a little
so its taut, then
brush on a face
powder that matches
your skin color.
Youre all set!

Feel your best under stress

Like you, Alison Sweeney sometimes has way too much
going on. Shes learned to keep it from messing with her health,
so follow her tips and youll feel calm and get fitter, too.

USED TO DRINK SEVERAL cups of

cofee to handle work stress.

I thought if I could stay up just a
little longer, Id be a better actor,
producer, and mom. Then I had a
wake-up call when a cafeinetriggered panic attack left me short
of breath. Now when Im stressed,
I remind myself that Im doing the
best I can. Thats all any of us can
do! Here are my tricks to staying
healthy, even when life gets crazy.

Fitness maven Alison Sweeney is the author

of Opportunity Knocks and the host of
multiple Food Network holiday specials.

DO THIS WHEN STRESS IS...

WRECKING
YOUR DIET

When I nish taping a scene,

I crave sugar. Imagine how
hard this was when I was
hosting Food Networks
Christmas Cookie Challenge.
There were baked goods
everywhere! But if I eat
them, my blood sugar
rises and it becomes more
diicult for me to make
smart decisions for the show.
Since snacking on set
is my vice, I pack a bag of
homemade dark chocolate
trail mix. Its delicious
but also gives me a ton of
energy. If youre craving
comfort food in a burger
and fries, I get it, and Im not
going to try to convince
you to eat a kale salad, but
maybe eliminate one side of
the bun and split the fries.
Its all about better choices.

KEEPING YOU UP
AT NIGHT

It seems that every time

we have to wake up early
for a ight, my husband
falls asleep without a
problem, yet I lie awake
worrying: Will the cab pick
us up on time? Did I pack
everything? Will I sleep
through the alarm? Ive
discovered that reading a
book in bed helps me wind
downit dawned on me
after yet another night of
watching my kids doze of
before I even nished their
bedtime story. Reading will
help you relax, but make
sure you still give yourself
permission to fall asleep
when you feel tired.
Forcing yourself to stay
awake to nish that chapter
is almost as bad as staying
up in a panic spiral.

MAKING YOU SKIP

A WORKOUT

The last thing I want to

do after being on my feet all
day is go for a run. The
couch is calling my name!
But the irony is that when
I do go to the gym, I feel so
much better. I can think
clearly and I even have an
easier time waking up
the next morning. I remind
myself of that, then go to
a workout that takes my full
attention. For the next 50
minutes, Ill only be thinking
about surviving my spin
class, not everything else I
still need to do before bed.
If you prefer exercising on
your own, do intervals,
where you push yourself
to go harder a few times
within your workout. Thatll
distract youand leave
you with a fresh perspective.

RUINING
YOUR MOOD

To be completely honest,
I get grouchy when Im
stressed. If Im still worrying
about a work email during
my family dinner, Im more
likely to snap at my husband
or be tougher on my kids
than I need to be. Its
not easy to switch gears
when youre overwhelmed
or frustrated, but you can
do it if you make an efort
to spend a few minutes
thinking about something
else. I use my car rides
home from work to listen
to podcasts or a book on
tape. And Im a big believer
in music playlists; singing
along to your favorite songs
will make you happy. By
the time you get home,
that 2p.m. crisis will feel
like a lifetime ago.

this preliminary
research on
pomegranate

antioxidants

and cognition.

POLY-PHE-NOLS: If the word doesnt

ring a bell, it soon will. Researchers are
beginning to examine the potential impact
of pomegranate polyphenol antioxidants
on various areas, including memory and
cognition. So polyphenols are definitely
something youll want to remember.
Polyphenols are an antioxidant known to
help combat unstable molecules that can
cause damage to your body over time
called free radicals.
DRINKING POM IS A NO-BRAINER.
A preliminary 2013 study at UCLA
conducted on a small group of older adults
with age-related memory complaints may
link pomegranate polyphenol antioxidants
to increased verbal memory performance
and increased functional brain activity in
fMRI testing. The study involved drinking
just 8oz of pomegranate juice daily for
four weeks.

These are early scientific findings on cognitive

health and the impact of pomegranate juice on
the human brain has not yet been adequately
studied. Clinical research is needed to help
establish causation and further studies on
larger populations are needed to confirm
the long-term effect of pomegranate juice on
memory and cognition.

POM, THE ANTIOXIDANT SUPERPOWER.

To maximize the polyphenol antioxidant levels,
POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice
contains the juice from four whole-pressed
pomegranates in every 16oz bottle. The wholepressed process extracts the polyphenols in
the rind, pith and arils. An in vitro study at
UCLA found that pomegranate juice has, on
average, more antioxidant capacity than red
wine, grape juice or green tea.

Your ultimate
busy-night meal
Dinner in 30? Almost no pans to

culinary brilliance? Youve got it
all, with a little help from the
ingenious Carla Hall, of course.

HEN I NEED A HEARTY MEAL but cant muster the

efort, I do what I call passive cooking. Its how
busy women can get a satisfying dish on the table fast.
I got the idea from the hobo dinners campers make, though
my take is more decadent. Roasting pears in foil packets
with shallots and thyme turns them into a lavorful savory
side. Then, on the same baking sheet, I roast pork
tenderloin (two small ones cook quickly). Because the
meat is uncovered in the oven, it browns nicely, while
the pears become soft in the foil. Just set it, forget it, and
catch up on your to-do listor your latest Netlix binge.

GARLIC PORK
butter, and our in a large bowl.
TENDERLOIN WITH ROASTED Toss until evenly coated; season
PEARS & SHALLOTS
to taste with salt and pepper.

FOR THE PORK:

2 pork tenderloins (about
2 lbs total), trimmed
2 Tbsp olive oil
4 cloves garlic, finely
chopped
Kosher salt and pepper
FOR THE PEARS:
3 Bosc pears, cored and
cut into 8 wedges each
3 shallots, peeled
and quartered
2 Tbsp unsalted butter,
at room temperature
1 Tbsp flour
1 small bunch thyme
1/
4 cup chicken stock
1/
4 cup pear nectar
Kosher salt and pepper
1. Place a rimmed baking
sheet in the oven and
heat to 475F. Rub the pork
tenderloins with the olive
oil and garlic; season with
salt and pepper.
2. Place the pears, shallots,

3. Cut two 18 x 12-in. sheets of

heavy-duty foil. Divide the pear
mixture and thyme between
them, then pour the chicken stock
and pear nectar evenly over
each. Bring up the two long sides
of the foil so the edges meet.
Seal the edges, making a tight 1-in.
fold. Crimp the short sides
closed so the liquids dont escape.
(To allow heat to circulate,
be sure not to seal too tightly.)
4. Remove the baking sheet
from the oven. Place the foil
packets and the pork tenderloins
directly on the heated sheet,
return to the oven, and roast
until a meat thermometer
inserted in the pork reads
145F, 15 to 20 minutes.
5. Remove the sheet from the
oven and let rest for at least 10
minutes before serving.
Slice the pork into 1/2-in.-thick
slices and serve alongside
the packets of savory pears
and shallots. Spoon some
of the sauce in the packets
over the pork.

If you use bronzy

tones, youll get
a soft but still
sultry look, says
makeup artist
Carola Gonzalez,
who works with
Kerry Washington.
To start, brush a
shimmery neutral
shadow thats
similar to your skin
color on lids and
work a sparkly
chocolate shadow
into and slightly
above the creases.
Extend the
chocolate shade a
little past the outer
corner, then skim
it along your
bottom lashes and
drag that out
too, so you end
up with a small
V at your eyes
outer corner,
says Gonzalez.
Smudge a dark
brown eye pencil
along your top
and bottom
lashes, apply
volumizing
mascara, and
youre sizzling.

EMBELLISH
YOUR EYELINER
A crisp ick of
liquid liner gives
you that irty,
Sophia Loren
efect. And since
its the holidays,
why not choose
one thats colorful
and a bit twinkly?
suggests makeup
artist Brigitte
Reiss-Andersen,
who works with
Claire Danes. The
foolproof way to
get an even line is
to draw it on rst
with black pencil,
ticking it up just
a smidge past
the outer corner.
Then, trace over
the pencil with a
glittery liquid liner
in a vivid jewel
tone like emerald,
plum, or navy,
she says. Give
the formula 30
seconds to dry,
curl your lashes,
and top it all
of with black
mascara.

FIND MORE
RADIANCE
If youre the
minimal-makeup
type, flushed
cheeks and
groomed brows
make you
look polished
but still fresh.
When you blush
naturally, the color
runs all the way
up your cheeks,
notes Daniel
Martin, who is
Jessica Albas
makeup artist. So
for a believable
glow, dont put
blush only on the
apples. Start it at
the top of your
cheekbone and
swirl the color
down your cheek.
A cool-toned pink
blush is perfect on
light skin, while a
pinky-violet hue
complements
olive or dark skin.
Then, to fill in
your brows, use
a pencil that
matches the color
of the hairs and
has a slanted
tip, which helps
you do soft,
light strokes,
Martin says.

GO FOR RICH
RED LIPS
Swiping on
a velvety red
lipstick is
so instantly
transformative,
you could almost
show up at the
party in your
pajamas and still
look glamorous.
(Hey, a girl can
dream.) For the
most flattering
shade, try
a cherry color
if youre fair,
an orangey
red for olive
skin, or a deep
crimson on dark
complexions,
suggests Martin.
And while the
beauty of a bold
mouth is that you
dont need much
else, a touch of
shimmery gold
cream shadow will
attract light to
your eyes so they
stand out,
he says. Tap the
color on the
center of your lid,
then use your
finger to blend
it out across
the lid and just
above your
brow bone.

SCENTS

Jo Malones secrets
to picking a fragrance
The world-famous perfumer helps you avoid
total sensory overload with her expert tips on how
to smell great (and win at gift-giving).

FROM TOP (LEFT TO RIGHT): COURTESY OF JO LOVES; COURTESY OF PUBLISHER; IPPEI NAOI/GETTY IMAGES; JAMES A. GUILLIAM/GETTY IMAGES; COURTESY OF MANUFACTURERS (3).

Find your new

favorite scent
This may sound obvious, but to end
up with a fragrance you truly adore, you
have to test it on your skin. Women
will buy a perfume based solely on
how it smells on a paper blotter or on a
friend, but the same scent will smell
diferent on diferent people, so you
need to try it for yourself. It helps to
shop earlier in the day, when your
sense of smell is more attuned. The
best spot to test perfume is your
forearm. Make sure you dont have
body lotion on your arms, since even
an unscented formula can alter how a
fragrance smells on you. You can
sample up to four scents at a time, two
on each forearm, but dont test similar
smellslike two loralson the same
arm, because you wont be able to tell
them apart. My trick for keeping track
when trying on several perfumes is to
use colored dot stickers. If you put a
diferent-colored dot on your arm
where you mist each scent, youll easily
remember which is which: The blue
sticker is the gardenia blend, the red
sticker is the rose and lemon cologne
It sounds weird, but it really helps.
And allow each fragrance to settle onto
your skin for at least 20 minutes before
you decide what you think of it.

Know how to shop

for someone else
Isnt it awful when someone gives you
a gorgeous-looking fragrance and you
open the box, take a whif, and realize,
Oh, no Im never going to wear
this. My advice is, rather than gifting
someone the actual perfume, give her
one of the scents ancillary products
like the body wash or lotion, which are

milder. If you do decide to buy

someone a fragrance, choose one
thats clean and fresh like a citrus or a
very soft loral, as theyre the most
universally appealing. Chanel No.19,
Tom Ford Neroli Portoino, and my
own Jo Loves Pomelo are all light and
crisp. The same goes for gifting
candles: Some of the heavier loral
scents like tuberose and frangipani
can be polarizing. Your best bet is
a candle in a nice green scent like
lemongrassor, since its the
holidays, one that smells like a log
ire or pine trees. Everyone loves
those scents in the winter.

Pick the cologne

your guy will like
Heres the thing with men: They dont
want to smell like theyre wearing
fragrance. They just want to smell
clean, which is probably all you want
too. So when selecting something for
a man, gravitate toward citrus
colognes. Ones with notes like
verbena, bergamot, and lime are
always a safe choice. Dior Eau Sauvage
is the perfect example of a citrus
cologne that most guys enjoy.

Jos inspiring autobiography, Jo Malone:

My Story (5 winners will win a copy; see page
150 for details), chronicles how she created her
original fragrance brand, Jo Malone, overcame
breast cancer, then reemerged with her
current brand, Jo Loves. In a unique twist, the
book is scented in her grapefruit cologne,
Pomeloan efect that lasts about ve months.

JO LOVES

Try a game-changing
application trick
I never spray scent directly on my
bodywhen you mist a fragrance, it
spreads out in a big plume and you
cant control where it goes. So I use a
foundation brush: Spritz your scent
on the bristles, then sweep it on your
skin wherever youd normally spray.
This pushes the fragrance into your
skin and helps dry out the alcohol, so
you get a truer scent that lasts longer.

CREATE
POLISHED WAVES
Loose, Old Hollywood curls give a relaxed type
of glamour to long hair, says hairstylist Sarah
Potempa, founder of the Beachwaver hair tools.
1. Part damp hair on the side, lining up the part with the arch of
your eyebrow. Blow-dry your hair with your ngers until its
80percent dry, keeping the part intact, then blow-dry the ends
with a large paddle brush or round brush to smooth them.
2. A one-inch curling iron is best for this look. Working with
one-inch-wide sections of hair, clamp the iron close to the
ends. Roll it about halfway up the section, twirling away from
your face. Repeat until all of your hair is curled.
3. Give coils a few minutes to cool. Mist hairspray on a paddle
brush and run it through all the curls; respray the brush and
glide it through again twice. Rub a drop of smoothing cream
between your hands and skim them over the surface of hair,
then tuck the less-prominent side of your part behind your ear.

60

On long hair, a fancy

barrette in the front can
seem too little-girl. But on
a short cut, its incredibly
stylish, says Potempa.
1. While hair is damp, make
your part a little deeper than
you normally would,
positioning it above the arch
of your eyebrow. Blow-dry
your hair as usual.
2. As youre blow-drying, use
your ngers to lift up your
hair on the nondominant side
of your part; spritz the
underside with hairspray,
then hit it with the dryer for a
few seconds. This gives you
a bit of sexy, messy volume,
and the heat locks it in.
3. Sweep the hair on the main
side of your part to the side,
then slide in a decorative
bobby pin or barrette about
an inch above your ear.

TIE CURLS HALF BACK

Theres something so romantic about
a style thats half up, half down, and
it works especially well on thick
or textured hair, says hairstylist
Bridget Brager, whose clients include
Rachel McAdams.
1. Gather the top section of your
haireverything from your forehead
back to your crownin your hands.
Divide it in two vertically, then lightly
tease the roots with a comb so
your twist will have some grip.
2. Tie the two sections into a knot at
the back of your head just below your
crown, then make a second knot on
top of the rst. Insert two bobby pins
(use four for very thick hair) into the
base of the knot in a crisscross shape,
which helps anchor the style in place.
3. Let your curls in back hang loose and
spritz them with a dry texturizing spray
for volume. Set the knot with hairspray.

MAKE A BRAID
IN FRONT
A simple braid across your
forehead adds a pretty
detail to a bob, and is also
lovely on longer hair when
youre pulling it back for the
night, explains Brager.

62

1. On dry hair, do a deep side part that lines

up with your temple. Brush the hair on
the less-prominent side behind your ear.
2. Starting at the part, create a loose, two-inchwide braid along your hairline until you reach
your ear. Secure the ends behind it with two
bobby pins in a crisscross pattern.
3. Gently tug at the sides of the braid a little to
give it a soft, wispy efect, then mist it with
hairspray for hold. If your hair is chin-length,
leave the rest down and tousled; if its long, wind
it all into a bun at the nape of your neck.

HAIR OIL WORKS BETTER WHEN YOU APPLY LESS

Its easy to get hooked on the glossy stuff; after all, it gives your style such a nice,
healthy shine. But if youre constantly smoothing hair oil on dry or split ends, you
could be making the problem worse over time, says hairstylist Rebekah Forecast,
whose clients include Diane Kruger. Many oils contain proteins, and too much
protein buildup on strands makes them brittle and prone to snapping. To get ends in
shape, run a little leave-in conditioner through them first to moisturize. Then dab the
tiniest amount of oilwere talking two drops, maxon top to seal the cuticles.

trace a clean nger around the

YOUR FRIDGE CAN HELP CALM YOUR SKIN

As anyone who uses an acne treatment knows, it can
make skin red and aky. So Jennifer MacGregor, M.D.,
a clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia

HOUSE CALL

What doctors tell their

friends about bones
Theyre underneath everythingso treat them right and youll be healthy and spry
for decades to come. These top bone doctors have the inside (ha) advice.
BY STEPHANIE WOOD

Bone tissue grows in your skeleton until

about age 30, when you reach what we
call peak bone mass. Women often ask,
If I reached peak bone mass by age 30,
what good will calcium do now? Heres
what I tell them: Calcium is important
for your entire bodyit helps your blood
clot and so much more. But its also essential to bone remodeling. Over time, your
bones develop tiny cracks, sort of like a
concrete street thats been driven over.
Calciumand also vitamin D, which
allows you to absorb calcium efficiently
mobilizes the repair process that helps
patch them up. So even after youve
reached peak bone mass, you need these
nutrients to keep your bones strong.
Unless you have three to four servings
of dairy or fortified juice daily, youre not
getting the calcium you need from your
diet. So you should take at least a
500-milligram supplement. Get a physical, tooyour doctor will check
your vitamin D levels as part
of the basic blood work.

least one risk factor for osteoporosis, like

a family history or a petite frame. So I
tell women who I think could be at risk
to ask their doctor about a scan at age 45.
Heres why: Your first bone density scan,
known as DXA, is a baseline exam, just
like your first mammogram. Bone loss
begins at menopause, so if we dont do
a DXA scan until years later, we have no
idea what your peak bone density was or
how fast loss has occurred. So start your
scans as soon as possible, and try to have
them done at the same facility, in the
same machine, every single timethats
where the findings are stored. If you cant
do that, its important to get a copy of

NEVER GET A HUMP

Ive had friends ask why that dowagers
hump is so common in old age and how
they can prevent it. The spine is a series
of wedge-shaped bones called vertebrae
that are stacked on top of one another,
and it degenerates with age and bone
loss. This allows compression fractures
to occursometimes just from coughing or bending overwhich cause the
front of a vertebra to collapse while the
back remains intact, tipping the spine
forward. Then more vertebrae collapse
under it, and the back becomes more
and more bowed. So the best way to avoid
the hump is to keep your spine strong.
My advice: Focus on your core.
When your core is weak, it creates more work for your spine.
Pilates and yoga are great for
strengthening your abs, as are
swimming and doing planks.
J. Jarrett Moss, M.D., medical
director of the Spine Center at
Northside Hospital in Atlanta

IT MIGHT BE ARTHRITIS!
A while back, a college friend of mine
mentioned that she was having a
hard time nursing her baby. She
said her hands were sore, stiff,
and swollen. That set off an alarm
for me. People hear the word

arthritis and think of senior citizens, but

rheumatoid arthritisan autoimmune
disease that attacks the jointsis really
a young womans disease, commonly
diagnosed between the ages of 30 and
50. It can be tricky to catch because the
symptoms can come and go and mimic
other conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome. Thats not good, of course, because
left untreated, RA can cause joint deformities and put you at greater risk for
osteoporosis. I referred my friend to
another rheumatologist in her area,
who put her on medication to help
control the inflammation. Shes doing
much better now. Jennifer Murphy,

Rheumatology in Charleston, SC, and

BONES LIKE TO BE WALKED ON

People who are bedridden lose bone
mass, and so do astronauts who are
weightless in space. The key here is gravity: The force thats put on your bones
by weight-bearing exercises like walking,
jogging, or lifting weights stimulates the
remodeling process. Conversely, when
youre swimming, biking, or using an
elliptical, theres less force applied to your
bonesyou dont get the same bonerepair benefits, but those exercises are
easier on your joints. So both types of
exercise are beneficial. Working out
strengthens your muscles and improves
balance, so youre less likely to fall and
break something. I always tell my friends
to alternate high-impact and low-impact
workouts for maximum bone benefit.
Salila Kurra, M.D., codirector of the
Columbia Adrenal Center and assistant
professor of medicine at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City

MIND YOUR MEDS

There are lots of things that can impact
bone health, but the ones that worry me
most are over-the-counter acid blockers
like Nexium and Prilosec. Acid is necessary to dissolve calcium in the stomach,
so when you take these acid blockers,
they inhibit your calcium absorption. If

Always ask
your doctor how
a medication will
affect your bones
before you
start taking it.

Savor the Simplicity of

you use these meds as directed, theyre

perfectly safebut people often take
them longer than the recommended 14
days without consulting a doctor. One
young woman I know had been taking
them unsupervised since high school
to deal with reflux and was starting to
experience osteoporosis-related fractures
in her 20s. The lesson: Always ask your
doctor how a medication might affect
your bones before you start taking it.
Some birth control methods, cortisonelike drugs, and antidepressants may
cause bone loss, for example. Im not
saying you shouldnt take them! But you
need to know how to protect your bones,
too. Robert Gagel, M.D.

Club Red Wants You!

DONT NEGLECT YOUR NECK

A surgeon friend came to see me complaining of pain in her neck and arm
that had gotten so bad she was unable
to operate. She thought shed pulled a
muscle, but I know that any sort of burning, shooting pain that travels down the
arms or legs comes from the spine. She
had a herniated cervical disc in her
necka condition that used to be more
common in men. Today, we see it just
as often in women, and usually their
occupation is the culprit. Anyone who
keeps their neck in a less than ideal
position for long hours is vulnerable:
Think surgeons, hairstylists, dental
hygienists, and, yes, people who stare
at a computer all day. If thats you, find
ways to minimize the stress on your
upper back and neck. Raise your computer screen higher, for instance, so
youre looking straight ahead with your
shoulders back. J. Jarrett Moss, M.D.

BANANAS

CHEDDAR CHEESE

Leg cramps or muscle spasms that strike in the middle

of the night arent just annoyingthe sudden pain may also
cause your heart rate to go up and make it diicult to

bananas, can help prevent your muscles from seizing
up. Even better, the fruit contains magnesium too, which
helps potassium enter your muscle cells more easily.

In order to produce
the relaxation-boosting

your brain needs the amino

since your body doesnt

it through food, and
cheesethe most divine

happens to be a top source.
Just keep your portions

OATMEAL
Just another reason to love carbs: They help boost your levels
of serotonin, a hormone that promotes feelings of calm and
plays a role in the production of melatonin. Findings suggest
that eating high-ber, complex carbohydrates (like oats)
could promote deeper, more restful sleep than low-ber ones.
Experts arent entirely sure why that is, but theyve noticed
that sugary carbs seem to cause more nighttime wake-ups.

Walnuts are a

The wise womans guide to booze

Before you crack open the cocktail menu, learn the happier, better-for-you way to drink.
BY DIANA VILIBERT

Experts say women can

have up to seven drinks
per week, and as many as
three in a dayjust remember thats a limit, not a challenge,
since too much alcohol can be toxic. Even so, by the time you
reach your 30s and 40s, you may nd you dont even want
that much. The enzymes that help metabolize alcohol slow
down as we grow older, which can bring on a hangover
more quickly. Other reasons you might be feeling the alcohol
more than you used to: You may be more susceptible to
dehydration than you were at 21. Our bodies have more fat
and less water than when we were younger, which changes
the way alcohol is absorbed. Also, if you take any medications,
your liver has to work overtime to break down those and the
sangria. So if your go-to drink order has you feeling more
topsy-turvy than tipsy these days, know that youre in good
(if somewhat nauseous) company.

FIRST, KNOW THIS

Be smart about your

drink choice and your
body will thank you.
WINE Red is always best: Its a good source of heart-healthy
resveratrol. But whether youre having red or a slightly less
antioxidant-rich wine like white or ros, be aware that a
proper 5-ounce serving is less than half of most wineglasses.
BEER Each 12-ounce serving is surprisingly lled with
nutrients like vitamins B 6 and B12 and folic acid, and beer
wont leave you feeling tipsy as quickly as wine or spirits
willbut its also higher in calories. So go for light beer. If
you bloat, skip beer altogether: Carbonation can mean gas.
SPIRITS Order clear liquordarker spirits like bourbon
contain more congeners, chemicals left over from the
distilling process that can worsen hangovers. Stick with
one or two 1.5-ounce servings, and be wary of diet mixers:
Unlike real sugar, articial sweeteners dont slow the
absorption of alcohol, so youll feel the efects sooner.

WHAT TO ORDER

Three ways to ease the aches:

EAT PROTEIN Its even more
efective than carbs at slowing your
bodys absorption of alcohol (so
youll have to come up with another excuse to have a second
piece of breadyoure resourceful). Pair your drink with
a lean protein like chicken, turkey, or sh, whether youre
ordering dinner or grabbing apps from a tray.
DRINK CHICKEN BROTH Really! Have a cup when you
wake up the next morning. Drinking robs your body of
electrolytes like salt and potassium (both found in broth)
that are essential to muscle and nerve function. Too
little of either and you may feel headache-y and nauseous.
DO YOGA It strengthens your parasympathetic nervous
system, which is crucial to a good nights sleep but is
suppressed by drinking. Try slipping into yoga pants a few
times a week10 minutes of downward dog before happy
hour probably isnt enoughand raise a glass to feeling great.

WHAT IT REALLY TAKES TO GET

PREGNANT AT 46
When Tamara Thrasher-Cateni chose to use an egg donor to get pregnantafter years of
heartbreak and lossher doctor said, If it works, no one will ever have to know. But she wants
people, especially other women and mothers, to hear what its like. Her story will change
the way you think about motherhood.

when I was 26 on a
train traveling through the South of
France. I was returning from the Cannes
Film Festival, which Id gone to with an
actress friend; he was a pilot in the French
Navy. As clich as it sounds, it was absolutely love at irst sight. Weve been together
for 23 years, married for 12.
I had never longed for children, but
being with Bruno slowly changed that:
I realized that there is nothing more
incredible, practically supernatural, than
the idea that two people can make another
person out of their love. By the time I
was in my 30s, I wanted to see our DNA
blended into a new being.
But thats not, as it turns out, how my
babies were created. Their DNA comes
from Bruno and an egg donor Ive never
met and never will. She did a tremendous
thing to help our family, but for me, the
path was not at all straight or simple.
My twins were born when I was 46,
but they were not my irst pregnancy,
or my irst children. Our irst sons name
was Enzo. We knew when I was 16 weeks
pregnant, at age 36, that he was going
to be born with spina biida. The doctors
gave him an excellent prognosis, though
hed have to have surgery immediately
and stay in the NICU at irst. We lived
in Oklahoma, but we made arrangements
for him to be born at Texas Childrens
Hospital in Houston, where I grew up
and where most of my family still lives,

because of the excellent pediatric neurosurgeons there and

the Newborn Centers family-centered philosophy of care. I
was worried about him, of course, but I loved being pregnant,
that connection I had with him.
When he was born, I barely saw him before he was taken
to the NICU. He had an open lesion on his spine that meant
I couldnt hold him; it was excruciating to watch him cry and
not be able to take him in my arms. But Bruno started singing a French maritime tune he used to sing when I was pregnant, and Enzo stopped cryinghe knew that voice. And I
knew his face: He looked just like Bruno! It was exactly like
Id imagined. Wed created this baby, and he was ours.
We spent every day with him, giving him baths, reading,
changing his tracheostomy tube. Then one morning I came
in and just knew something was not right. The nurses said,
Well, youre a irst-time mom, you dont recognize his cues,
and Youre stressed out by him being in the NICU. Which
was all true. But the next morning he was whisked away for
a CT scan, and then into surgery, and we never saw him awake
again. He died from an infection. While I dont think Enzo
could have been saved if my concerns had been heard sooner
he was very, very sickI do wonder if he could have been
spared some sufering. The experience was heartbreaking.

T ENDED UP BEING YEARS before we were ready to try for

another baby. Wed moved from Oklahoma to Texas permanently (me irst, then Bruno a year later after he inished his
Ph.D. in biosystems engineering) so I could take a job at Texas
Childrens Hospital as their irst Family-Centered Care Specialist. I wanted to use my experience to help empower families
and build partnerships between them and health-care providers. My doctors told me I was going to have a hard time getting
pregnant, since I was 42 by then, so I started taking fertility
drugs. I knew that if I wasnt pregnant in three months, I didnt
have a good chance. So when it hadnt worked by then, I stopped
the drugsand thats when I got pregnant with Ezra.
He was growing right on target, and then, when I was 16
weeks pregnant, I woke up in the middle of the night. In my
dream, someone had said, The baby died. I woke up Bruno.
I was having a bad dream too, he said to me. Is the baby
okay? No, I said to him. He wasnt. I wasnt bleeding, no
contractions. But I knew that he was gone.
The next morning, the doctor conirmed that there was no
heartbeat. It turns out Ezra had Trisomy 9, a rare and very
serious chromosomal disorder. I could not believe that lightning had struck us twice, but I was at peace knowing that he
died inside me, listening to my heartbeat. I was comforted by
that, after Enzos traumatic death in the hospital.
I opted to deliver Ezra: I wanted to say good-bye to him, for
my husband to hold him. In the week it took for the induction

process to take efect, I was at work, planning a memorial ceremony Texas Childrens hosts for NICU families. It may sound
like Im a strong person, but Im not. I have a strong conviction:
I knew what I had to do for my family and for the other families
who had lost children. Their devastation was my devastation.
When Ezra was born, we baptized him and spent the night

with him. He was cremated, like Enzo was. For both of my

boys, I asked to put them in the crematorium at the funeral
home myself. I wanted their mom to be the last person who
touched them and gave them back to God. When I pushed the
ignite button, I wanted to diebut I also felt privileged to have
experienced an extraordinary little persons life, however brief.
I dont believe that one heals from losing a child, but I think
theres a type of recovery thats possible. I never stopped wanting a family, but my doctors and I agreed I would probably
continue to miscarry. I might have a stillborn child again.
Even so, I knew in my heart that I wanted to be pregnant,
because carrying my sons had been my greatest joy. The optimal chances for a pregnancy meant younger eggs: donor eggs.
When you decide to use donated eggs, you can look through
databases of potential donors, see what they look like, try to
discover what they are like. I spent months poring over these,

not with eagerness, but crying as I struggled with the fact

that this was where I had ended up, this was how I was going
to have my family. I wanted to be the 40-something woman
who proved everyone wrong. I believe that miracles can happen, but I had to come to terms with the fact that my miracle
would not be a natural pregnancy. Bruno didnt fully understand what a leap it was for me to accept using another womans
eggs. In his mind, we were going to have a family, and thats
what we wanted. For me, it was giving up that irst, very meaningful reason Id wanted children: to create one with him.
I didnt particularly seek out donors who looked like me, and
as I looked through the proiles, I was shocked to see that the
eggs from blonde, blue-eyed women were more expensive than
the ones from dark-haired women. It was in this extensive search
that I started to discover what was important. Many of the women
were very candid that they were becoming donors for monetary
reasonswhich I understand. But it felt like a business transaction, and that made it hard for me, as if it were taking away
all that is beautiful in making a baby with someone you love.
Then I stumbled across this donor, a student who wrote in
her bio that as a young and fertile woman, she felt it was her
obligation to help people who wanted to create a family. Yes, she
would be getting paid, but I believedand still dothat there
was a genuine altruism in her. I realized that this was what I
wanted to pass on to my children: kindness. More than raising
a child who looks like me, I want to raise a good person.
She had already done a donation, so we had to see if shed
agree to do another, then wait for her to inish the semester.
After a lot of panicked waiting, we received 30 eggs from her.
The lab fertilized half via intracytoplasmic sperm injection
(ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into the egg.
(The other half were fertilized naturally: The eggs were placed
in a petri dish and the sperm did their thing.) My doctor transferred a fresh embryo to me, and put the rest on ice in case it
didnt work. I never got a positive pregnancy test with that one.

I got a positive just four days after the

transfer of multiple embryos. I was thrilled until the
six-week mark, when I hemorrhaged so frighteningly
that I was sure I had lost the baby. I cried for a long while
alone in the bathroom before calling my husband and doctor.
I thought I had jinxed myself by being so excited by the early
test. And I had lost a baby: It turns out Id been pregnant with
triplets, and now there were two. Afterward, though, I felt a
strange sense of peace. That night, I slept well and dreamed
of a blond baby in a crib, reaching up to me. I think the mothers
intuition that told me something was wrong with Enzo and
Ezra was letting me know that these babies were okay.
After other bleeding episodes, my doctor put me on bed
rest for more than seven months. The bright spot in that long

HE NEXT TIME ,

and worrisome time was that, because I was high-risk, I got

to see my babies via ultrasound every week. Their little proiles, their strong heartbeats, the hiccups on two sides of my
belly those carried me through. I got them to 37 weeks and
they were delivered via C-section at nearly 7 pounds each.
They screamed and they cried and they opened their eyes,
and I got to take them back to my room. I was drunk with
emotion: It was one of the most glorious moments of my life.
I was so proud of the beautiful little beings I had made, and
grateful to God and my husband and family and doctors.
And especially to our egg donor, this stranger who unknowingly holds a piece of my heart.
Six days later, we put Remi and Emma in their car seats
and took them home. Id never been able to do that, and I
wake up every single day with an overwhelming sense of
relief. Infertility had been on my mind every minute, and
now the burden is lifted. In its place are my children. They
are 2 now, and brilliantevery parent says that, I know, but
I think they are. And also: They are loving. They are kind.
But heres another, brutally honest part of my story: While
there are women who conceive babies with donated eggs and
then deliver and immediately feel like the baby is theirs, utterly
theirs, for me it was diferent. Remi looked just like Bruno,
like Enzo had. But Emmashe looked like her donor. It hurt.
People have said to me, Do you think the twins get this or
that from their real mom? and its easy for me to correct them.
I am their real mom. But its also true that when they do something new, I wonder whether thats just them, or if they take
after the donor. I think about her a lot. Experts are starting to
discover that the mother carrying the pregnancy with donated
eggs may inluence her babys genetics. It gives me some comfort that the twins may have a piece of me in them. Their
stubbornness, for instance: That just might be from me.
The ongoing shroud of secrecy over womens infertility issues
makes using an egg donor seem shameful. It isnt. Im not embarrassed. I was apprehensive, because of my own preconceived
notions about motherhood. I wish we had tried to have kids
earlier, but I want people to know that there is no failure in having children this way. I have a friend who is thinking about egg
donation, and I told her: If your heart says you want children,
as mine did, this is an option. There will be things that are painful, but the joy, the relief, and the happiness you can have completely outweigh any compromises you might make.
I am a mother. Not exactly the one I thought I would be
what parent is?or in the way I wanted to be, but I am. It is
an overwhelming gift, to have children, and
Im grateful to the process that got me here.
I wanted our children to be a mix of our
family history and the tangible fruit of our
love. Today, as I watch them grow, I can
see, so completely, that they are. R

BE SMART ABOUT FIRE

Sixteen-year-old Kilee Brookbank had just returned

the scent, the house went up in ames. For more than a month,
Kilee was treated for severe burns at Shriners Hospitals for

shes partnering with the organization to prevent others from
sufering like she did. While the re in Kilees home was caused

That might just keep you from

overdoing it at Christmas dinner. You
would think youd be famished after
a good workout, but no: In a British study, women who

ate a few hundred calories less. Well toast to that.

COOL YOUR COFFEE

Cofee might seem like the only thing getting you through the bitter
cold, so brace yourself: The World Health Organization recently labeled
hot beverages as potentially carcinogenic, after a team of scientists
found evidence that liquids served above 149F can damage cells in the
throat and eventually cause cancer. Now the good news: Simply adding
some creamer will usually put your cofee in the safe zone, says Kevin
Sinnott, author of The Art and Craft of Coffee. Itll taste better, too.
A too-hot cup scalds the taste buds, he says. Like yours black? Let it rest
briely before you guzzle it downeven a minute should do the trick.

chronic moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults ages
18 years and older.
moderately to severely active polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis
(JIA) in children ages 2 years and older.
You may continue to use other medicines that help treat your condition while
taking Enbrel, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and
prescription steroids, as recommended by your doctor.
Enbrel can help reduce joint damage and the signs and symptoms of the above
mentioned diseases. People with these diseases have too much of a protein
called tumor necrosis factor (TNF), which is made by your immune system.
Enbrel can reduce the effect of TNF in the body and block the damage that too
much TNF can cause, but it can also lower the ability of your immune system
to fight infections. See What is the most important information I should
know about Enbrel? and What are the possible side effects of Enbrel?
Who should not use Enbrel?
Do not use Enbrel if you:
have an infection that has spread through your body (sepsis).
How should I use Enbrel?
Enbrel is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous or SC).
If your doctor decides that you or a caregiver can give the injections of Enbrel
at home, you or your caregiver should receive training on the right way to
prepare and inject Enbrel. Do not try to inject Enbrel until you have been
shown the right way by your doctor or nurse.
Enbrel is available in the forms listed below. Your doctor will prescribe the
type that is best for you.
Single-use Prefilled Syringe
Single-use Prefilled SureClick Autoinjector
Multiple-use Vial
See the detailed Instructions for Use with this Medication Guide for
instructions about the right way to store, prepare, and give your Enbrel
injections at home.
Your doctor will tell you how often you should use Enbrel. Do not miss any
doses of Enbrel. If you forget to use Enbrel, inject your dose as soon as you
remember. Then, take your next dose at your regular(ly) scheduled time. In
case you are not sure when to inject Enbrel, call your doctor or pharmacist.
Do not use Enbrel more often than as directed by your doctor.
Your childs dose of Enbrel depends on his or her weight. Your childs doctor
will tell you which form of Enbrel to use and how much to give your child.
What are the possible side effects of Enbrel?
See What is the most important information I should know about Enbrel?
Enbrel can cause serious side effects, including:
Infections. Enbrel can make you more likely to get infections or make any
infection that you have worse. Call your doctor right away if you have any
symptoms of an infection. See Before starting Enbrel, be sure to talk
to your doctor for a list of symptoms of infection.
Previous Hepatitis B infection. If you have been previously infected with the
hepatitis B virus (a virus that affects the liver), the virus can become active
while you use Enbrel. Your doctor may do a blood test before you start
treatment with Enbrel and while you use Enbrel.
Nervous system problems. Rarely, people who use TNF-blocker medicines
have developed nervous system problems such as multiple sclerosis,
seizures, or inflammation of the nerves of the eyes. Tell your doctor right away
if you get any of these symptoms: numbness or tingling in any part of your
body, vision changes, weakness in your arms and legs, and dizziness.

Blood problems. Low blood counts have been seen with other TNF-blocker
medicines. Your body may not make enough of the blood cells that help fight
infections or help stop bleeding. Symptoms include fever, bruising or bleeding
very easily, or looking pale.
Heart failure including new heart failure or worsening of heart failure you
already have. New or worse heart failure can happen in people who use
TNF-blocker medicines like Enbrel. If you have heart failure your condition
should be watched closely while you take Enbrel. Call your doctor right away
if you get new or worsening symptoms of heart failure while taking Enbrel,
such as shortness of breath or swelling of your lower legs or feet.
Psoriasis. Some people using Enbrel developed new psoriasis or worsening
of psoriasis they already had. Tell your doctor if you develop red scaly patches
or raised bumps that may be filled with pus. Your doctor may decide to stop
your treatment with Enbrel.
Allergic reactions. Allergic reactions can happen to people who use
TNF-blocker medicines. Call your doctor right away if you have any symptoms
of an allergic reaction. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include a severe
rash, a swollen face, or trouble breathing.
Autoimmune reactions, including:
Lupus-like syndrome. Symptoms include a rash on your face and arms
that gets worse in the sun. Tell your doctor if you have this symptom.
Symptoms may go away when you stop using Enbrel.
Autoimmune hepatitis. Liver problems can happen in people who use
TNF-blocker medicines, including Enbrel. These problems can lead to liver
failure and death. Call your doctor right away if you have any of these
symptoms: feel very tired, skin or eyes look yellow, poor appetite or
vomiting, pain on the right side of your stomach (abdomen).
Common side effects of Enbrel include:
Injection site reactions such as redness, swelling, itching, or pain. These
symptoms usually go away within 3 to 5 days. If you have pain, redness,
or swelling around the injection site that doesnt go away or gets worse,
call your doctor.
Upper respiratory infections (sinus infections).
Headache.
These are not all the side effects with Enbrel. Tell your doctor about any side
effect that bothers you or does not go away.
Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side
effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
How should I store Enbrel?
Store Enbrel in the refrigerator at 36 to 46F (2 to 8C).
If needed, you may store the Enbrel syringe, autoinjector, or the dose tray
for the multi-use vial at room temperature between 68F to 77F (20C
to 25C) for up to 14 days.
Once Enbrel has reached room temperature, do not put it back in the
refrigerator.
Throw away Enbrel that has been stored at room temperature after 14 days.
Mixed Enbrel powder should be used right away or kept in the refrigerator
at 36F to 46F (2C to 8C) for up to 14 days.
Do not store Enbrel in extreme heat or cold. For example, avoid storing
Enbrel in your vehicles glove box or trunk.
Do not freeze.
Do not shake.
Store Enbrel in the original carton to protect from light or physical damage.
Keep Enbrel and all medicines out of the reach of children.

What makes Eva Longoria the best kind of friend a

woman (and all women) can have? Whatever it takes

aybe you know an amazingly stylish

woman who provokes surprised
declarations of and shes so smart from
new acquaintances. Frustrating and reductive, but not unfamiliar, right? For an
actress, these stereotypes are even more
ingrained: You can be seen as either the
type who could testify before Congress or
the kind whos into fashion and design.
So Eva Longoria, whos taken seriously
as both, is a real-life Hollywood unicorn.
More than a decade after she first
charmed us playing Gabrielle Solis on
megahit Desperate Housewives, the 41-yearold has added these lines to her rsum:
director, cookbook author, documentary
ilmmaker, producer, home decor designer,
political activist, and founder of a wellrespected charity (The Eva Longoria
Foundation). And since she clearly doesnt

We photographed you with some of your

girlfriends, all of whom youve known at least 20
years. Is your girl squad a big part of your life?

[Laughs] When people ask me if I collect anything,

I say, girlfriends, and Id like to put them all on a
shelf in my house and show them of! Girlfriends are
so important. Every time I need some advice, a good
time, a glass of wine, they are there. Its important
that women have their own tribes. My tribe, some of
whom Ive known since grade school, weve shared
history, we grew up together, we evolved together,
we shared all the good and bad moments in our lives
together. Im so grateful for them. They are my family.
the world. That paradoxical mix of power player and domestic
goddess is key to Evas success, and her likability. Whether
through my foundation or the projects I choose to produce
and direct, my lifes work is about empowering women, says
the Corpus Christi, TX, native. Now with my fashion line, I
get to satisfy my creative side while helping women feel strong
and conident. Between lying back and forth to Great Britain
to shoot a new BBC series, Decline and Fall, and putting the
inal touches on her holiday collection, Eva found time to chat
with me about being a newlywed, inding mature love, and
why her glass is always half full. Its inspiring stuf. Read on.
The Eva Longoria collection really focuses on the
everyday woman. Why did you want to target her?

Because thats me and my friends. We should all be able to

have quality garments that are afordable and timeless and that
you can wear over and over. The entire collection is my DNA. I
didnt want to do a line where somebody else designs, then just
slaps my name on the label. I wont make it if I wouldnt wear
it. Comfort is key, but I also want to make a strong statement.
How is your style influenced by growing up in Texas?

Ive always loved jeans and boots and I still do. Im very selective about my jeans and how the fabric feels against my legs,
so the ones in my collection are made with this four-way
stretch that lifts and sucks you in but is totally comfortable.
Its like wearing Spanx, but you dont want to take them of!

REDBOOKMAG.COM / DEC 2016 JAN 2017

Im not sure Ive ever met an actress who does as

much as you do. Where does that tireless work ethic
come from?

My mother and my dad, but mostly my mom. She raised four

girls, one with special needs, and was a full-time educator
but still managed to have a home-cooked dinner on the table
every night by 6 p.m. So whenever I look at what Im doing,
it never seems like enough. Im always like, More, more,
I can do more. I also come from a family of overachievers.
I was the last person in my family to get a masters degree,
which I got in Chicano studies three years ago. So really,
Im the underachiever in the family!
But when you were growing up, didnt you ever want to
just chill and party?

No. It was never an option. I dont think I even thought that

way. I wanted to have a Quinceaera when I was 15 and
my family didnt have the money, so I got a job at Wendys
and paid for it myself. I couldnt wait to go to work and
make my own money. There was never any resentment,
because I saw how hard my mother worked and all she
did for my sister, and I wanted to do whatever I could to
help. We all did.
You got married in May to Jos Bastn. Has that
changed your life in any way?

No. It hasnt changed me or him at all. In fact, we were married even before we were oicially married.

HAIR: SHAYLIN JONES AT KEN PAVES SALONS FOR ILLUME MGMT. MAKEUP: ELAN BONGIORNO AT EXCLUSIVE ARTISTS MANAGEMENT USING ENJOUE BEAUTE. MANICURE:

Personally, Im not a big accessory girl. Sometimes I

wear studs from Claires and sometimes I wear the
diamond studs my husband gave me. Thats pretty
much it, and my wedding ring. I like clothes that
speak for themselves. A good bag and a good pair
of shoes are really all anyone needs.

What do you mean?

Youre a big womens advocate. Would you go into politics?

Even before we got engaged, we just felt married. We called

one another my husband and my wife. I was never comfortable referring to him as my ianc. Our wedding was just
the party; it had nothing to do with the essence of our relationship. We were dedicated to one another from the time we met.

[Long hesitation] No. Ive thought about that a million times. I

think the most powerful part of our democracy is being a citizen. Our society cannot function without citizens. Voting, civil
disobedience, protesting can make our voices heard. Theres
more things you can do as a citizen to bring about change than
as a politician. After some deliberation, I choose to hold on to
that power rather than relinquish it. But I do have a great deal
of respect for people who devote their lives to public service.

Oh, yeah. Were both older and you learn at a certain point that
you dont have to waste a lot of time with people who might not
be worthy of your time. We loved each other
and knew from the start that we wanted to
invest in one another. I think thats called
mature love. It didnt take either one of us
very long to know that this is the one. In
my case, it only took 40 years to ind him!

What is the most important issue

women face today?

What was so special or different

about being with Jos versus other
relationships youve had?

We were just a perfect match on many levels:

spiritually, culturally, and professionally. We
both have very busy lives and respect and
support one another in our ambitions, our
careers, yet we both know to put each other
irstbefore everything. I feel very lucky.

Making it official
Eva and Jos (center) at their
wedding, with Mario Lopez and
his wife, Courtney Mazza.

You changed your name to Eva Longoria Bastn. Why?

I love him, I love his last name, and I love that tradition. Its
a choice I made, but I realize its not for everybody. I was
thrilled to take his name. Eva Longoria is my brand.
Youre sort of like a domesticated feminist?

Yes! I think anyone who believes that women deserve equality

is a feminist. Its a very over-publicized word. Im a feminist
by my own deinition, which might difer from someone
elses. My deinition is that women should have equal rights
when it comes to anythingnot just equal pay. For me its
about gender equality in every sense of the word.
Are the two of you ever able to relax and decompress?

My husband and I try not to work in the house or bring

electronics into the bedroom. No computers, cell phones,
nothing that plugs in. That time after work when were
both home together is for us. Id rather stay late at work
and inish up there than bring it home with me. When I
get home, I want to cook us dinner, have some wine, catch
up on political news.
Youve done so much successfully. Is there anything
youve tried and havent been good at?

[Laughs] Oh yeah! I cannot sing. Once, I was going up for a

part in a ilm musical and I went to a singing coach before
the audition. Its not something that comes naturally to me.
I dont mind being out of my comfort zone as long as I learn
something and can grow from it, but singing wasnt even
funand I wasnt good at it. Nope, singing is not for me.

REDBOOKMAG.COM / DEC 2016 JAN 2017

The interesting thing about women and

womens issues is were half the population, yet were treated like a special-interest
group. To be pandered to is insulting. Policy
regarding working women and child care is
a huge problem in our country. I remember
when my sisters were working and their kids
were smaller, 50 percent of their income
went to child care. Its very, very hard to
raise children and pay for day care unless
youre a double-income family, sometimes
not even then. It shouldnt be that hard.

What can we all do to make sure our voices are

being heard?

Other than voting, which is the best thing women can do,
grassroots organizing. You dont have to reinvent the wheel to
make a diference in your community. So many people think
that change is diicult. They think, In the big picture, what
kind of difference can I really make? We make a diference one
person at a time. In the case of the environment, for example,
all one person has to do is start recycling. Thats change.
Big question: What does the world need most right now?

Compassion.
Youre so inspiringly optimistic. Dont you ever lose hope
or feel defeated?

Oh, no, no, no, never. I am absolutely the most glass-halffull person youll ever meet. There is no glass half empty
in my world, nor have I ever looked at the world that way.
I remember losing auditions or getting let go from a job
and Id say, That must mean theres something amazing
ahead for me around the corner! My friends would laugh
and look at me like I was crazy. I have never, ever had a
personal pity party. If something doesnt work out the way
I hoped, its just part of the plan. Somehow I was supposed
to make that left turn, instead of a right. R

F YOUVE GOT a couple of friends and a

couple of dollars, theres almost no way
you can be a 21st-century American woman
and not get invited to a direct sales party.
Maybe youve even hosted one. The vast
majority of the countrys 20 million direct
sellers are female, and their product lines
include practically everythinganti-aging
skin care, digital workout plans, statement
jewelry, natural food mixes, sexy lingerie.
Jamesetta M. Walker, 46, from Chesapeake, VA, spent three years selling cosmetics from a brand she loves and now
ields invitations from friends excited
to share their products. She sees how
great these jobs aretheyre fun, theres
good money therebut shes also deeply
aware of why theyre complicated. You
can buy great stuf from a friend (or a
friend of a friend of a friend), but with all
that commerce comes something trickier
to navigate: the combination of relationships and the possibility of serious cash.
Youre at a friends house, youve eaten
and had drinks, there are a bunch of women
there looking at merchandiseand then
you feel bad if youre the only person not
ordering, Jamesetta says. Opting out
of a party can be just as awkward.
Recently, Jamesetta decided to skip
a jewelry party to spend an evening
with her kids. Her friend, the host,
couldnt wrap her head around it.
She was like, Is that really why
youre not coming? I was very
hurt, Jamesetta says. Still, she
understood: As a seller, she once
held an event for a bridal party she
was in and expected them to buy
because they were my friends. When
one didnt, Jamesetta felt snubbed,
like her pal wasnt supportive. She also
sold products at a church event, but later
wondered if that had been inappropriate; a
friend conirmed that yep, it kind of was.
The second we said Amen, I started
pitching, she recalls. I was ridiculous.
Direct home sales can really blur the
line between friend and customer, says
Janet Shope, Ph.D., a professor of sociology

red

at Goucher College and coauthor of Paid

to Party: Working Time and Emotion
in Direct Home Sales. It also uses the
reciprocity that is part of friendship
Ill do this for you, and I assume youll
be there for meas a way to generate
sales. For Jamesetta, selling the cosmetic
line got harder and harder. I didnt have
the comfort level to get out there and
build a clientele, so I stopped when I
dried up my friends, she says.
Money complicates relationships;
anyone who has ever been married
could tell you that. In friendships, its

extra-tough. Given how rapidly the direct

sales industry is growingthe number
of sellers has increased 11 percent just
since 2014we all need to igure out
how to handle it, whether youre a seller,
buyer, or devoted friend who may never
want to purchase a thing.

HEN HER BEST FRIEND got into direct

sales for a clothing brand, Shari

Donk, 27, of Hoboken, NJ, was thrilled.
I had watched her struggle with her fulltime job, so to see her so excited made me
really happy, she says. Whats better than

YOUR MONEY

cheering on a friend as she discovers a

passion? How about not feeling responsible for keeping that dream alive?
In an industry where friendships are
supposed to play a dominant role, theres
that nagging feeling that you should pull
out your wallet to help. This is especially
true for women, says Leah Seidler, a psychotherapist in Berkeley, CA, who specializes in communication in relationships.
Men ind it easier to compartmentalize.
They can try to kick each others butt at
something, and then of the ield theyre
close buddies. Women have a harder time
mentally when friends and work intersect.
But sellers want you to know theyre
not only in it to make bank. We believe
in the productthats why were sharing it, says Misty Kearns, whose company, CEO of Me, trains direct sellers.
Many of us dont want your money; we
want your support. In the big picture,
encouragement will help your friend
more than purchasing one more tote
bag will. So ask about her passion for
yoga that led her to sell itness products.
Youll connect with her and her brand
emotionally instead of just inancially.
Shari admits she spends too much on
her friends clothesshe likes them, but
mostly buys to show her supportso
shes starting to cut back and cheer her
on in other ways. I make sure to text her
when she has a sale on Facebook to tell
her she did a great job, she says. I do
what I can to support her and she never
seems to expect any more from me.
Even so, you cant avoid the inancial
piece of it: Nobodys in business just for
the parties. And often, women end up
with a whole circle of friends who sell
something. Kim Smith, 46, of Plainield,
IL, used to sell jewelry and is constantly
invited to sales parties by her friends in
other sectors of the industry. The idea
or so she thoughtwas that shed buy
from them and theyd buy from her. Id
go to their skin-care parties and buy the
cheapest thing, because I wanted to be
supportive, Kim says. But at her own
parties, she started to notice who was
buying and who wasnt. If a party was

YOUR MONEY
great, I didnt care, but other times I did,
she says, since the income mattered to
her family. She never asked pals or family members why they werent ordering
anythingit felt rude. Id just tell myself
that maybe they were having a tough
month and try to move on, she says.
Its uncomfortable to talk about money
with friends. If youre the potential buyer,
you may feel bad if youve bought before
but cant this month. Saying no feels like
a rejection, and you dont want to reject
your friends, even though its really just
rejecting their product, says Seidler. Its
important to be clear, she says, so say, I
have to budget these days. I can only buy
things I need, not just want. Not totally
true? Respond: I love that youre doing
this, but the jewelry is not my style. Please
tell me how the party goes, though.
For the seller, dealing with rejections
gets easier over time, but in the moment,
they can sting. Managing expectations
is one of the biggest challenges. Sales
parties can be so much like a regular
party (with the bonus that youll make
money!) that it can feel like a betrayal
if a good friend bows out. You have to
remember youre simply the marketing
arm of a company, so just do your job,
says Kearns. When Kohls sends out
lyers and not everyone comes in for
their big sale, do they get upset? That
mindset will help keep things trouble-free
with friends who dont place an order.
Returns require a similar internal pep
talk. Realizeand this is hardthat a
friend who changes her mind about a
lipstick has not changed her mind about
you, Kearns says. If youre the one with
buyers remorse, try: Its so pretty, but it
didnt look as great on me as I thought.
You can still be a good customer, and a
good friend, without keeping a foundation that doesnt match your skin tone.
Sometimes, just talking about direct
sales might trigger complex feelingsthis
business can seem like an elephant-shaped
charm bracelet in the room. Direct sales
is a job, Kearns points out, and we all
tend to discuss work a lot. But its hard
to listen to your friend talk about her
112

products without feeling like shes selling them to you, because after all, youre
part of her target audience, Seidler says.
Heather Hernandez, 41, from Glendale,
AZ, sells accessories. When she recently
told a friend she only needed one more
sale to hit her goal, things got tense: I
wasnt asking her to buy, but I think she
felt guilty because she said she wished
she could place an order. Heather didnt
mean to put her on the spot. I quickly
told her I understood and had already
contacted more customers, she says.
As a buyer, if youre up-front about
what you want, its easier to listen to
your friend discuss her sales the same
way you would any other exciting thing
shes doing. As a seller, its part of your
job to develop a sense of who wants to
hear work stories and who wants a catalogue. We all have stuf that takes over
our lives for a periodkids, renovations,
marathon trainingand for everyones
sanity, its important to talk about them
and other things.
Above all, keep communicating. Jenn
Aube, 36, founder of the direct sales
company Do You Bake?, almost lost a
close friend when she uploaded a photo
of the two of them to her businesss Facebook page. I didnt intend any harm,
but she didnt like that the picture was
used as marketing and told me to take
it down, Jenn says. Her response was
shock: She said I was concerned about
the business and not our friendship! Of
course, in direct sales, business often
happens in social situations, but nobody
talks about the boundary until its been
crossedand sometimes not even then.
For many people, its like they got
into the relationship for one reason and
now theyre being put into another context, as if the rules of the friendship have
shifted, Seidler says. If youre really
bothered by a friends constant posting,
unfollow her feed (she wont get an alert).
If you do want to broach the topic, be
supportive and say, I hope your business
works out, but I miss seeing more about
your life and kids, Kearns suggests. Do
this in person, though, not over email,

WE LEARN FROM HER

Be a hero
to homeless
veterans
When a
male veteran
is homeless,
we look at it as
the countrys
failure; when a
female veteran
is homeless,
we look at her
as a failure, says
Jas (pictured
below with
Chiquita and
her daughter,
Nayeli).

More than 2 million female

veterans have put their lives
on the line to protect our
country, yet thousands have
become homeless since their
return home. U.S. Army Major
Jas Boothe is ghting to
get them the resources they
deserve. BY JESSICA PRESS
Jas Boothe was stationed in
Oklahoma, preparing to deploy to Iraq,
when Hurricane Katrina decimated
everything she owned in New Orleans.
Then, a few weeks later, the single mom
was diagnosed with the rare cancer
adenoid cystic carcinoma. The next eight
monthsduring which she underwent two
surgeries and 30 cycles of radiation at military
hospitals in Texas while her son stayed with her
aunt in Missouriended up being the easiest
part of her journey. My real struggles began
when I was discharged from the hospital, says
Jas, 39. My unit had deployed, and everything
in New Orleans was devastated: I was homeless
and jobless. She reported to a Department
of Veterans Afairs oice looking for help in
getting back on her feet and was told there
were no housing programs for female veterans
with children. The person I met with told
me that because I had an illegitimate child, I
should get on welfare and food stamps, says
Jas, who has since married and had another
son. In that moment, I felt like nothing.
She started receiving public assistance and
slept on her aunts couch. Eventually, with the
aid of insurance reimbursements and FEMA
money, she was able to start saving, and found
employment with the Army National Guard; she
even deployed to Kosovo in 2008, fulilling her
dream of serving overseas. Then one day in 2010
she saw an episode of Oprah about homeless
female veterans. Here Id assumed I was an
anomaly and thats why there hadnt been any

resources for me. We deployed

more than 40,000 single mothers
to Iraq and Afghanistanhow are
we an afterthought? Something had to be done.
Jas got to work forming Final Salute Inc.,
a nonproit that provides homeless female
veterans with safe housing, emergency funding
for burdens like past-due rent, and resources
to ease the transition to civilian life. Within two
years, the organization bought a home in
Virginia that accommodates up to 10 women
and children and is stocked with clothing,
food, and diapers. Since 2011, the nonproit has
helped 2,000 women and children.
Final Salute gives you a hand up before you
are sleeping outside under a bridge, says
Sergeant Chiquita Pea, 34, an Army reservist
who was struggling after shed lost her banking
job. Jas became her guardian angel, getting
Chiquita and her daughter, Nayeli, a room at
the Virginia home and even personally taking
in Nayeli for a year when Chiquita deployed to
Afghanistan. When you go from being a
leader in the Army whos accustomed to being
in charge of others to no longer being able to
take care of yourself, it can be very defeating,
Chiquita says. Jas and Final Salute helped me
recover my livelihood with dignity.

MY STORY

Finding more
happiness in the holidays
Theres comfort in doing the same things year after year.
But when they dont bring you joy, you have to
invent your own traditions, says Veronica Chambers. She did
just thatand found a whole new warmth in Christmas.

I, MY NAME IS VERONICA and

Im a pleaser. Or, I should say, a
pleaser in recovery. In my past,
I understood intellectually that No
is a full sentence and that it was
ridiculous to take on a to-do list longer
than the U.S. Constitution. But that
didnt stop me from trying, especially
around the holidays. I didnt have a
lot of traditions growing up; I lived in
fractured households with not a lot of
money. (My mom likes to say we used
to dine on air pudding and nothing
piean exaggeration, but not by very
much.) So when my husbands family
turned out to be warm and welcoming,
I threw myself into their celebrations.
For 10 years, we made the twohour drive down to my in-laws, and
every year there was just so much to
do: presents to wrap and pack, potluck
dishes to be prepared, wine to be
bought, holiday cookies to be picked
up at the grocery store since I cant
bake to save my life (though of course
I would try, which would add another
level of anxiety to the proceedings).
We would leave late, because thats what
happens when you have a little kid
and a husband whos glued to his
computer doing just one more thing.
And then there would be the texts
from my in-laws, Whats your ETA?
Whats your ETA? They asked because
they were trying to time dinner, but
I always wanted to text back, Our ETA
is late. Horribly late. I was a stress
ball before I even walked in the front
door. But these were our traditions,
so I had to stick to them. Right?

116

It wasnt long
after I turned 40 that
I admittedto myself,
anywaythat the big
celebration brought me not
just ready-made family
traditions but strain and
exhaustion. I wondered: Is there
another way to celebrate, a way
that acknowledges the peace and
comfort Ive always craved?
So it began, innocently enough,
as one Christmas away. Id
heard about this beautiful old
boutique hotel that had
recently been renovated,
and at Christmas, I
noticed, the prices
plummeted. I started
envisioning my
husband, 5-year-old
daughter, and me looking out at the
ocean from a cozy room, with other
people to cook and take care of all those
holiday details. I longed to put my little
family there. And then I realized:
If I dont make this happen, who will?
That year, we downplayed the
departure from tradition with my
husbands family. We promised wed

REDBOOKMAG.COM / DEC 2016 JAN 2017

be back in a week
and would celebrate
again with them, and
nobody protested. After all, it
was going to be just this once.
From the moment we woke up on
December 23, I was more relaxed than
Id been in ages. There was no food to
prepare. We were going to a hotel! I
packed our swimsuits for the pool and
felt like a rich lady, jet-setting of for
Christmas. I packed my daughters
presents. Then I was done. We left late
for the hotel, because of kid-watchingTV and husband-on-computer

think it became clear that we werent

saying, Holidays with you are a pain
in the butt. We were saying, We love
you, but we want to do it a diferent
way, and they knew it was true. The
calls and emails slowed. Doing our
own thing was accepted into the family
fold, like anyones quirks or opinions.
We always go see family later in
the week, if not the very next day.
(Sometimes we see my family, too,
though we usually visit them other
times of the year, since Christmas isnt
as deep-down crucial for them.) Its a
thrill for my daughter, to have her two
Christmases, and energizing for the
adults to meet after the shine of the
big day starts to fade. I know my plan
doesnt sound like heaven to everyone;
to those who revel in your family
holiday, I am delighted for you. But
every year I read so many Facebook
messages from miserable grown-up
women. One said she was 56 years old
and had just spent another terrible
Christmas with the sister who cuts her
down and the adult nephew who
questions why she never had children
when everyone knows she had multiple
miscarriages. I cried all the way
home, she wrote, and her husband was
so angry he nearly punched somebody.
I wanted to say, Dont go. Stop
going. You are a grown woman and
you get to make choices. Yet I know
its not that easy. Our parents are in
good health and, knock wood, we have
many years left to enjoy their company.
There are no complicated inancial
or emotional land mines to
navigate. If my husband
werent on board, it would
be tougherprobably
impossibleto do this.
Our big family tribes
are important; I

REDBOOKMAG.COM / DEC 2016 JAN 2017

believe this. But seeking independence

for our smaller family has given us
a stronger identity, and my daughter
has seen irsthand how to create
something special out of a single idea.
And yes, its for mejust metoo.
It gives me the feeling that Ive done
what they always say to do in those
airplane safety videos: Ive applied my
own oxygen mask irst. I get three days
to recover from a hectic season. Time
slows down. I exercise, go swimming,
read a book. Im calmer, more patient.
I go into the big gathering with the
kind of peace Ive always longed for the
holidays to have. Things that used to
bother me just dont. Ive already
given myself and my family Christmas;
then, we widen the circle and come
together with others to share the love.
Our holiday tradition is, ultimately,
about balancing the way I give to myself
with the way I give to others. No matter
where you ind joy on the big day, do
something for yourself, too, something
that makes you feel good for days
afterward, not moments. Is it taking
one of those wine and painting classes
with a friend you never see, or getting
your makeup done at a store counter
before your oice Christmas party? For
me, the minute that hotel-room door
opens, my brain clicks of. I stop
cataloging chores and calls to return,
menus and to-do lists. I get away from
my old habits and inclinations. I catch
glimpses of myselfswimming in a
pool on Christmas Eve, dressing up for
high tea with my daughter, running
down the hill toward the lighthouse on
Christmas Day with my
familyand I feel like the
woman I want to be.
Thats my gift to myself,
and its the one every
woman deserves. R

syndrome, but there were no texts

asking for our ETA. When it turned
out we wouldnt make it until dinner
although the plan was to arrive for
lunch, I actually called the hotel and
they said, That will be ine, Mrs.
Chambers. Your room will be ready.
On Christmas Eve, we slept in and
walked on the beach. In the afternoon,
we read by the ireplace, then went for a
long swim in the indoor pool. I spent a
heavenly 20 minutes in the eucalyptusscented steam room. On Christmas
morning, we cracked the window.
Looking out at the ocean and hearing it
felt like a gift before the presents were
even opened. After lunch, we walked
out to a 19th-century lighthouse. It
was so peaceful. I felt so connected to
both my husband and my daughter. I
asked my husband, Do you think we
can do this again? He looked at me
incredulously. Of course well do this
again, he said. Its perfect. So we
did. Its been four years of Christmas
on the chilly, beautiful beach thats so
blessedly empty it feels like our beach.
It helped that there were no family
feuds, no agita or angst driving our
decision. My husband was the one who
told his family months in advance
that wed be back at the hotel the next
Christmas, because we had a sense it
would take some time to get used to.
But it was me they emailed and called
(again and again and again) to ask
why. My husband can see three missed
calls from his mother and think, Ill
call her this weekend. Me, I get back to
you within the hour. Im the pleaser,
remember? I want to make everyone
happy. But that turned out to help. I

ROOT FOR THE UNDERPIG

The most relatable movie character

underappreciated and with

Seth McFarlane is a saxophone-playing lab

Forget the TMZ version of Hollywood. In La La

gave you goose bumps and love overcame all.

chasing the

Unexpected
By pushing herself to see what no one else sees coming,
Amanda Pressner Kreuser is moving the content
business into the future. Six years ago, thanks to the
digital revolution, she saw the publishing industry in the
midst of a monumental shift: Editorial colleagues had
fewer places to publish their work, while brands were
still learning how to digitally connect with audiences
through content. Amanda and partner Julie co-founded
Masthead Media as a marketplace that aligns brands
with experienced creative talent, giving companies a
new way to share their stories with the world.
WHATS THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS?
If I see an opportunity to create something new, Im not afraid
to go in an unexpected direction. Listening to my inner voice,
and ignoring the norms and benchmarksparticularly as
they pertain to women and where we should be in life by a
certain agehas led me to some of my proudest moments.
HOW IS YOUR TAKE ON BUSINESS DIFFERENT?
Were living in exciting times when there is no right way to run
a business, or a set path to success. You dont just have
permission to break the rulesthats exactly how companies
become huge success stories! Julie and I are constantly
challenging ourselves to innovate and to distinguish
Masthead Media in an increasingly competitive field.
HOW DO YOU SHATTER EXPECTATIONS?
By seeking out and hiring the best possible talent. Ours is a
business of real people, not products, and were only as good
as the people we hire.
WHATS THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE
EVERY WOMAN?
Try to find a pocket of timewhether its two weeks or six
monthsto pursue something meaningful that has nothing
to do with work. In my late 20s, I quit my job to travel the
world. By getting out of my comfort zone and immersing
myself in new cultures and situations, I learned more about
myself than I ever could have behind a desk.

Ive gotten comfortable with being a

little uncomfortable...making sacrifices
to pursue something I really believe in.

gray makes any bright color feel

Opt for a matte inish, and also paint the

Yes, yes, white walls are great. But if you really want rooms
that make an impact and lift your mood (which you deserve),
pick up some paint, pull out a few contrasting accents,
and drench your house in gorgeous hues. Truly, its that easy.

BLUE

CHERRY RED

HOW TO DO IT: Stop staring at that stack of

paint strips and look to your closet for inspiration.

Like denim, blue goes with practically
everything, says designer Lindsey Coral Harper,
who energized a cool, calming bedroom with
pops of red. Afraid your place may skew a little

too Uncle Sam? This foolproof formula ensures

youll get it right: 60-30-10. That means 60percent
of the room is dedicated to a dominant color (blue),
30percent to a secondary color (white), and
10percent to an accent (red).

HOW TO DO IT: Theres more to this

pairing than just plain cutenesstheres

science! Red and green (opposites on
the color wheel) naturally enhance one
another, and the same goes for their
pastel counterparts. Benjamin Moore color
and design expert Andrea Magno
says its ine to play around with diferent
tones of the same color, like the greens
here: jade mats in the frames, mint chair
fabric, avocado vases perched up high.
It can take a room from feeling matchymatchy to relaxed, she says. The same
pink on the walls and the loor keeps it

HOW TO DO IT: It only takes a couple of

painted walls and a single throw pillow
to transform a blank canvas into a cheery
spacea simple trick for those of us
wary of living in a crayon box. A room
saturated with natural light is perfect
for a punchy yellow like this. It helps
balance out the strength of the color,
says Magno. If your home gets less light
or you just prefer a tamer take, choose a
yellow with a gray or sienna undertone to
make it warmer, subtler, and less electric.

When in doubt, turn to nature as your
guide. The blue and green in this hallway
harmonize like the grass and the sky,
