Introductory Statement:
This study is examining the correlation between the amount of foreign language
used by the classroom teacher and the speaking proficiency of the students. In
other words, does the amount of Spanish spoken by the classroom teacher affect
the amount and quality of Spanish that can be spoken by the student. I invite you
to participate in this study so that a correlation can be established and best
practices in teaching can be put into use. Questions about the study can be
directed to Daniel Retberg at the email provided above.
What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to determine the amount of Spanish a teacher should
use in class to make the students better at speaking Spanish.
What will I do in this study?
If you decide to participate in my study, you will complete a short questionnaire
about things that occur in class and you will complete a short speaking assessment
that is appropriate to your level of Spanish.
How long will it take me to do this?
It will take you anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes to complete both the questionnaire
and the assessment.
Are there any risks of participating in the study?
No, there are no risks that are involved with this study.

What are the benefits of participating in this study?


Benefits of this study include best practices implemented by the teacher in order
for the student to achive maximum speaking proficiency. Also available would be a
copy of the study results upon request.
Will anyone know what I do or say in this study?
Any answers will be kept anonymous. At no point in time will you be asked your
name or your teachers name. You will be linked to your teacher by a number that
the teacher will randomly choose.
Will I receive any compensation for this study?
No, there isnt any compensation associated with this study.
Is there a different way for me to receive this compensation or the benefit
of this study?
Upon request, a digital or paper copy of the study can be obtained.

You are free to refuse to participate in this research project or to withdrawl your
consent and discontinue participation in the project without penalty or loss of
benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. However because of the anonymous
nature of the survey it will not be possible to remove your data once submitted.
Your participation will not affect your relationship with the institutions involved in
this research project.
My return of this survey implies my consent to participate in this research
and I have been given a second copy of this form to keep for my records.
If you are not satisfied with the manner in which this study is being conducted, you
may report (anonymously if you so choose) any complaints to the MA in education
