Nandini Sundar.
Acting on a complaint from a tribal woman whose husband was killed by Maoists last week, police in Chhattisgarh
have registered a case of murder and other sections of the law against Delhi University professor and activist Nandini
Sundar, JNU professor Archana Prasad, CPM leader Sanjay Parate and 17 others named by the complainant.
The complainant, Vinita Baghel, alleged that a fact-finding team that included Sundar and Parate had earlier warned
her husband, Samnath Baghel, not to oppose the Maoists.
Sundar and Prasad rejected the allegation, saying the case against them was absurd and fabricated.
Watch What Else is Making News
Samnath Baghel was killed by Maoists on the night of November 4 in Nama village of Sukma district. He was dragged
out of his house while Vinita, who was with their four-day-old son, watched.
The FIR identifies 20 accused in the case, including 14 Maoists. It names Sundar, Prasad, Parate, Vinit Tiwari, Mangu
Kawasi and Mangalram Karma, members of the fact-finding team, as Naxal samarthak (Naxal supporters).
In her complaint to police, Vinita said that the Maoists, before killing her husband, declared he had opposed a visit by
the fact-finding team to their village in May. She also said that the Maoists warned others in the village not to work for
police.
Sukma Superintendent of Police I K Elsela told The Indian Express: We have received a complaint from the victims
wife as well as other villagers that he had been killed because he filed a complaint with the authorities against
Nandini Sundar and others.
The villagers had formed a Tangiya group against the Maoists and he (Baghel) was one of them. A case has been
registered under sections of murder, criminal conspiracy, sections of the Arms Act and rioting. Arrests will take place
after an investigation is complete. This is just a First Information Report, he said.
Police said Baghel was a leader of the Tangiya group, comprising men from the villages of Nama and Sautenar. Armed
with bows, arrows and axes (called Tangiyas), the group had taken up the responsibility of protecting their villages
from Maoists.
Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) S R P Kalluri told NDTV: We are quite convinced that a very grievous
offence has taken place We will put up all the facts and evidences before the court of law. I dont believe in parallel
investigations and media trials.
Nandini Sundar, according to us, is a suspect. Her behaviour has been suspicious right from the beginning I dont
want to go by what Nandini Sundar says She is a common suspect and she will be treated accordingly, Kalluri
said.
Sundar and Prasad hit back at the Chhattisgarh police, saying the murder case against them was a way of fixing them
for their report in May which stated that villagers in the area were victims of fake encounters and rapes by police as
well as violence and killing of informers by Maoists.
The charges are absurd. We last visited the area in May, almost six months ago. So to charge us with murder, rioting
and the Arms Act in the murder of a villager is complete misuse of the law, Sundar said.
She claimed the FIR was directly related to the CBI chargesheet indicting former SPOs turned police constables for
arson in three villages in 2011. She also said that the constables recently burnt effigies of several activists in
complete violation of police rules.
I dont know him (Baghel). But I feel sorry for his family, both for losing him and for being made pawns of the police.
Baghels wife is being used by police. I feel sorry for her. She doesnt even know us, she said.
Sundar, who was present in Delhi on November 4 when the murder took place, also wrote in a Facebook post: First
our effigies were burnt by police and now a false FIR is being filed against us. This should also show what kind of
false cases have been filed against adivasis all these years people are routinely charged in cases where they have
no involvement at all. Thats why the jails of Chhattisgarh are so over-crowded.
Archana Prasad also slammed the FIR: They are trying to hide their own illegal activities by lodging false cases
against us. Its a totally baseless charge. They have been trying to fix us for the last six months but havent found a
stitch of evidence. Why are they going after political activists? We are political party people, not Maoists. Our report
clearly states that we are holding both sides responsible for the mess. They are attacking democratic political parties
for raising voices.
Prasad too was in Delhi until the morning of November 4 before leaving for Pune and returning on November 6. They
are getting back at us for bringing atrocities to justice. We are following the law, they are not following the law. They
are fabricating cases, she said.

to discourage transactions in cash. Now that a majority of Indians have or can have a RuPay debit card, I therefore,
propose to introduce several measures that will incentivise or credit or debit card transactions, and disincentivise
cash transactions.
This February, Peter Sands, former chief executive of Standard Chartered Bank, had published a research paper at the
Harvard Kennedy School, which proposed taking high denomination notes out of circulation.
Sands wrote that even though the electronic payments system were rapidly growing throughout the world, cash would
remain the predominant method of making small payments in every country. As technological innovation enhances the
cost effectiveness, flexibility and ubiquity of electronic payments, with internet payment schemesthe balance of
usage will continue to shift towards using electronic payments for an increasing share of transactions, Sands wrote.
Yet, there is no need to wait for new payment innovations. High denomination notes already play a very limited role
in the legitimate economy. They account for a tiny share of transactions and are used and held by a small, wealthier
sub-segment of the population, his paper said.
Incidentally, 85 per cent of all cash in the economy was in Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations as on March 2016,
according to data provided by the RBI.
This a strong step taken by the Narendra Modi government and will benefit the growth of digital payments and digital
banking in India. We (MobiKwik) are excited to be a part of this historic moment, said Bipin Preet Singh, CEO of
MobiKwik.
With this, the quantum of Indias economy moving through the digital pipes will witness massive growth. Both
Snapdeal and FreeCharge are committed to supporting all such initiatives, said Kunal Bahl, co-founder & CEO
Snapdeal, which owns payments platform FreeCharge.

NDTV pushes blog saying I&B Ministry blinked, Govt not amused
| The Indian Express
Written by Krishn Kaushik | New Delhi | Published:November 9, 2016 4:59 am
Press Information Bureau Director General Frank Noronha, who was present at the Monday meeting, rejected claims
made in the blog. The Minister did not invite anybody for any meeting from NDTV, Noronha told The Indian
Express. In fact, an appointment was sought by Prannoy Roy, he said.
On the blog details, Noronha said: That is absolute rubbish and sensational exaggeration. In the I&B Ministry,
officials were not pleased that senior staffers of NDTV had pushed the blog.
The blog quoted sources saying a top official was asked to contact a senior editor in NDTV and arrange a meeting
with Naidu. NDTV told the official that it was already going to the Supreme Court and was not interested in any
rapprochement. The official hinted that if NDTV said that it will be more mindful in future, the ban could be lifted.
Sources say, the official was surprised by the firm stand the NDTV editor took and informed the minister that NDTV
was not ready for a compromise, the blog said.
According to the blog, feelers were sent out again to senior NDTV editors and correspondents that the government
wants to end it. Sources say, there was much relief when the ministry received word that Roy was ready to meet
Naidu.
It went on to say it appears NDTVs firm stand at the meeting took the ministry by surprise. It had expected the
channel to be more conciliatory. Instead, Prannoy Roy is believed to have stuck to his basic stand that NDTV has not
done anything wrong, and will not make any request or appeal for the ban to be reconsidered.
The ministry, the blog said, requested NDTV to make an official representation for the ban to be put on hold. After
discussions with its lawyers, NDTV agreed to give an official letter provided a letter from the minister holding the
one day ban in abeyance, would be handed over simultaneously Finally, the government blinked.

The White Paper clearly admits to the primary importance of cash in relation to both generation and use of black
money. There have been suggestions earlier that the government may consider amending existing laws, including the
Coinage Act 2011, The Reserve Bank of India Act 1934, FEMA, and the Indian Penal Code, or enacting an entirely
new statute aimed at regulating the possession and transportation of cash above a particular threshold limit. This may
include creating a limitation on cash holdings for private use, as well as provisions for confiscation of cash held
beyond prescribed limits.

With almost 60 per cent of the economy estimated to be a cash economy, the decision is likely to be quite disruptive in
the short-term, says Pronab Sen, former chief statistician of India and Country Director for the International Growth
Centres India Central Programme. Current transactions are getting affected. This disruption will have a real
economic effect, he said.
Read: Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes demolished: Heres what to do with old notes
While the decision will adversely impact sectors which deal with unaccounted money such as real estate, stock market
and gems and jewellery, it will also hit the livelihood of neighbourhood vegetable vendors who borrow overnight
funds from moneylenders, kirana stores, small traders and even the labour class.
The Prime Minister admitted there may be temporary hardships for honest citizens, but exhorted all to seize the
moment. In a countrys history, there come moments when every person feels he too should be part of that moment,
that he too should make his contribution to the countrys progress. Now, we again have an opportunity., he said.
Read: Amit Shah says fight against blackmoney will continue
Welcoming the move, President Pranab Mukherjee called upon people not to panic and to follow the governments
guidelines for exchanging the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. But people started queueing up outside ATMs soon after the
announcement. A private banker said, banks foresee a massive logistics problem. Generally, we replenish at the
margin. Each bank has certain amount of cash. Now, we have to replace the entire stock.
Read: Congress Will support any step against black money
The utility of the move depends on how effectively the government is able to monitor the exchange of currency. It
would serve no purpose if hoarders devise smarter ways to circumvent. You cannot undermine the ingenuity of the
Indian chartered accountant, said the head of a top private mutual fund.
Experts, however, said the demonetisation decision only affects the stock, and not the flow. In other words, you have
taken care of the black money problem of the past. But what about the future, said IGCs Pronab Sen.
The decision to introduce the Rs 2,000 note also flies in the face of the argument that eliminating high denomination
notes will put the black money problem to rest. Isnt the Rs 2,000 note easier to stash, asked a journalist at a press
conference after the Prime Ministers address. It will be easier to exchange the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes with a
Rs 2,000 note, replied Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das. Moreover, the Reserve Bank of India will
monitor and regulate the circulation of the higher denomination currencies, he said.
Read: Govt demonitises Rs 500, 1000 notes: Here is how India Inc reacted
Justifying the doing away of the current series of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, Das pointed out that between 2011 and
2016, the circulation of all currency notes, from the lowest to the highest denomination, grew about 40 per cent.
In the same time period, the circulation of Rs 500 denomination and Rs 1000 denomination currency notes increased
by 76 per cent and 109 per cent, respectively. The size of Indian economy during this period, however, expanded by
only 30 per cent. So, obviously there has been a disproportionately high usage of high denomination currency notes,
he said, adding there were also reports about use of this money for storing unaccounted wealth.
Even the Prime Minister said in his address that the magnitude of cash in circulation was directly linked to the level of
corruption. The poor have to bear the brunt of this. It has a direct effect on the purchasing power of the poor and the
middle class, Modi said.
RBI Governor Urjit Patel said, Notably, in recent years, fake Indian currency notes in high denominations Rs 500
and Rs 1000 notes has been increasing. The government has also observed the misuse of genuine high-denomination
notes in terror-financing and also for holding black money.
The opportune moment for withdrawal of the old series, Patel said, was when the RBI and the government were ready
with the new series of banknotes for an effective replacement. As of today, and over the past weeks and months, we
have ramped up our production and are ready to meet such a requirement in the weeks and days to come, he said.

Arups new ball partner, Krishna, had been struggling a bit this season. But as Joshi said, this performance (4/27 in
the second innings) will give him confidence.
Brief scores: Saurashtra 153 all out and 81 all out in 39.5 overs (Amitoze Singh 30; A Das 5/21, K Das 4/27) lost to
Assam 171 all out and 66/1 in 15.4 overs by 9 wickets
Points: Assam 6, Saurashtra 0

after his first innings heroics hadnt quite got them close enough to Jharkhands mighty total. And Pant reveals that
having seen and experienced the flatness of the pitch earlier in the day, he had decided to back his aggressive play and
take the opposition by the scruff.
It was quite a batting-friendly pitch, and I was given a lot of loose balls. So I just went after them and runs kept
coming. It was quite a crazy knock and was like a whirlwind but I never knew about being close to a record, he says.
Already this season Pant has shown that he keeps his talk about his game as straightforward and candid as his
approach to batting. And though he is quite pleased to now be etched into the record books forever, the confident
youngster isnt prepared to be too chuffed about it.
See bhaiya, people are calling me and talking about this innings only because its a record. Otherwise why would it
even get a mention. Regardless of how many balls it came in, it still counts only as a hundred. If anything I should have
made it a bigger score, says Pant.
Its not surprising that Pant might feel a tad gutted about not turning one of his centuries into a daddy hundred-as
Graham Gooch would call it-considering that his former India U-19 captain and best friend, Ishan Kishan, had kind of
set the bar higher by scoring 274 for Jharkhand earlier in the match. Though Pant quickly disses any form of
competition between the two.
See we are still best friends off the field. On the field its all business and there is the usual banter we indulge in
whenever either of us is batting. It helps being wicket-keepers as we constantly can be in each others ear, he says
with a laugh.
Pant also doesnt believe in tagging this having been a dream season for him despite the eye-popping numbers that
hes managed already-a strike-rate of 113.01 overall. Instead he wants to focus on the amounts he has learned with
each knock.
If you look at the others who have scored a lot of runs, their strike-rates are more in the sixties and seventies, so it
does feel special to see the rate at which I have scored. But Ive also learnt so much. Like it was patience and batting
with the tail that I learnt during my triple-ton. Today, it was all about backing my game to the hilt, he says. But the
dream you talk about is playing for India. Only then will I even use the word dream with regards to my cricket, he
quickly adds.
Life off the field still remains rather sober, and Pant admits that handling the vast number of phone calls on a recordbreaking day has been rather arduous. His plans for buying a fancy car, that hed told this paper following his lucrative
IPL contract, have been shelved and he has settled for a kaam chalau option for now.
I prefer talking to my non-cricket friends at the end of the day, ask them about college. I havent bought anything fancy
yet, anyway Im not around to take care of them, he says. Talk soon shifts to the main topic of the day, the Indian
governments sudden decision to bid adieu to prevailing Rs. 500 and Rs.1000 notes. But Pant isnt too perturbed. For
now, he looks like he has plenty of more 100s up his sleeve, on the cricket field anyway.

Amitoze Singh offered some resistance and counter attacked against Abu Nechim with three boundaries as the seamer
conceded 13 runs in his first over.
But the experienced Nechim fought back to castle Amitoze who missed the line to be out for 30, something that
triggered the collapse.
In a devastating second spell of six overs, Krishna claimed three wickets for seven runs, including four maidens.
Saurashtra were 39/6 and then 69/8 as their late order batting had revived their first innings total to 153 after Assam
opted to field following the first day washout.
I dont want to make it an excuse but toss definitely played a role, Saurashtra coach Sitanshu Kotak said.
Having said that, it was definitely not an 80-run wicket. Our batting is letting us down. We have not batted this badly
in the last two seasons.
Brief Scores:
Saurashtra 153 and 81; 39.5 overs (Arup Das 5/21, Krishna Das 4/27).
Assam 171; 62.3 overs and 66/1; 15.4 overs.
Assam won by nine wickets.
Points: Assam 6, Saurashtra 0.

Test match, which was also its first-ever day-night Test match, there were only a handful of spectators in Dubai against
the West Indies.
At the moment our main grounds are in UAE, but you must have noticed in Test cricket only handful of people
watched matches and you can realize how important it is to revive cricket back home, Abbas said. We play on the
other side of the world and host international teams for months, financially it also hurts us.
Cricket grounds (in UAE) demand so much money that I cant tell. I just pray that theres peace in Pakistan and
foreign teams themselves say that they wanted to play in Pakistan.
Despite no home Test matches, Pakistan rose to No. 1 in Test cricket briefly before slipping to No. 2 after India
defeated New Zealand recently.
And that has impressed Abbas.
Theres no international cricket in Pakistan and despite that we became No. 1 and now No. 2. It clearly shows how
much depth we have in our Test team, Abbas said.
Abbas also said the PCB could do more to bring in foreign teams. Shahryar Khan is the chairman of PCB, but he never
played first-class cricket.
I dont want to criticise the present setup, they have done lots of good things, Abbas said, but to me a sportsman of
that particular game should be the head of it.

Both Cook and all-rounder Stuart Broad, who is to play his 100th Test, have talked about England being the clear
underdogs going into the rubber, especially against an Indian side being led in aggressive style by Kohli.
Kohli would be extremely keen to improve his not-so-impressive record with the bat against the visitors. The Indians
are understandably wary of the England team.
Coach Anil Kumble wants his team to execute plans exactly like they did when they swamped New Zealand 3-0 to
begin the home season on a rousing note.
On Monday, vice captain Ajinkya Rahane talked about the dangers of becoming complacent even against an England
side, which has a few new faces.
This would also be the first Test series in India where the Decision Review System (DRS), which the BCCI has
consistently opposed, will be used.
The hosts, with little experience of it in Tests barring the one series eight years ago in Sri Lanka, have been busy
planning their strategy on how to approach the system.
India, who have an enviable record of not being beaten in 14 home Tests since their loss to England in Kolkata in
2012, have a good batting line-up even though it has been hit by injuries to KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit
Sharma.
Kohli is once again expected to lead the way in batting along with Rahane and the likes of Murali Vijay, the recalled
Gautam Gambhir and Cheteshwar Pujara, the teams leading scorer against New Zealand, who will be playing at his
home town in Rajkot.
Because of the injury sustained by Rohit in the one-day series against New Zealand, either Karnataka batsman Karun
Nair or Baroda all-rounder Hardik Pandya appear set to make a Test debut.
More than anything, the focus will be on the track prepared for the game at the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA)
Stadium. SCAs secretary Niranjan Shah had told reporters that the pitch will aid spin from day four.
India have the clear edge in spin department with the in-form Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja expected to
give a lot of trouble to the English batting line-up, especially on turners.
Although theres merit in India going in with all three spinners Ravinchandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit
Mishra , with the leg-spinner expected to be kept in the reserves at least for the opening tie.
Ishant Sharma will make a return after missing the New Zealand series due to illness to add meat to the pace
department.
It would be interesting to see whether hes preferred over Umesh Yadav to partner Mohammed Shami.
On paper, India have a good opportunity to avenge their last three series defeats to England.
England will sorely miss their pace spearhead Anderson who is expected to join the squad here having recovered
more or less from his shoulder injury but will not be in the playing eleven.
The visitors, however, have a top class fast bowling attack led by Stuart Broad and will have the tall Steven Finn,
Chris Woakes and all-rounder Ben Stokes to fall back on depending on the combination they choose to field in the
playing eleven.
Moeen Ali, who started as a batsman and can bowl off spin, has now become the sides frontline spinner and will
have left-armer Zafar Ansari and leggie Adil Rashid as his partners in crime although off-spinner Gareth Batty is
another option.
However, more than anything else, it would be a battle of attrition between the two sides and India would be expected
to hold their own better in home conditions.

mother and the whole community, it is the state that has taken up the task of redefining blood relations going against
constitutional and judicial pronouncements. What do we make of this?
The National Commission for Scheduled Castes, in its report based on documentary evidence and the reports of the
district collector of Guntur, states that Rohiths caste is Mala and for all purposes, he is an SC. Meanwhile, the oneman judicial commissions (constituted by the ministry of human resources to look into the facts and circumstances of
Rohiths death) now-leaked reports clearly point to the anxiety of the state. The reports assertion that Rohith was not
a Dalit is not only an overstepping of the terms of reference set by MHRD, but also a blatant violation of the
constitutional norms that authorise the district collector as the only official who can certify a persons caste.
This leads to a troubling observation. Thus far, the state has not negated the discrimination Rohith and Radhika Vemula
underwent. How do we account for this discrimination if not via caste?
What is puzzling to everyone who has been involved is the nature of caste and the way it operates in our times. Do we
see this just as the states attempt to avoid acting on the SC/ST Atrocities Act, which would then imply that action need
not be taken on government functionaries who are held responsible? And that both Rohith and Radhika Vemula have
fabricated their Dalitness?
A brief conversation with Thirumal, a friend and colleague, brought out an interesting argument: The Dalit movements
constant recourse to constitutional and state measures, reflective of an aspiration of a free and equal life in a modern
democracy, has led to this contradiction. The Dalit movement, for a long time now, has relied on the state and its
institutions largely juridical systems to redress caste injustice and also to aspire for a society without caste
discrimination. This reliance on the state indicates an emphasis on moving beyond the confines of framing caste within
the biological, within the confines of the village and its caste-based systems of justice. However, this has resulted in a
typical control of caste-discourse from the states side.
The states need to control is manifest in how it defines Rohith and his mother Radhika Vemulas caste, despite
contrary claims emerging from within the community. Although a counter discourse is emerging in recent Dalit
movements, including the Rohith movement and the Una movement, the states interest in controlling the discourse on
caste is apparent.
The irony of the modern state, on which Dalit movement depends too heavily, is that the state cannot but be inhabited
by caste by its absent-presence and its brahmanical ideologies. We need to remind ourselves that we have a modern
state that, instead of seeking the annihilation of caste, wishes away caste.

The inferno of environmental pollution that the nations capital and its surroundings have been witnessing has many
causes, including weather conditions (thermal inversion) that facilitate the settling of particulate matter and other
pollution, dust on the streets generated in part from construction activity, and vehicle-related emissions. Particularly
critical is the burning of paddy after the kharif harvest which happens every year.
Multiple causes will require a broad-based response but one of the permanent solutions to the pollution problem must
address paddy burning. This is where pulses come in. In the Subramanian Committee report on pulses that was
submitted last month to the ministers of finance, agriculture and consumer affairs, the possibilities created by a new
variety of arhar (pigeon pea) developed by K.V. Prabhu and his colleagues at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute
(IARI) were discussed.
This variety (Pusa Arhar16) has the potential to be grown in the paddy-growing regions of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar
Pradesh and eventually in all of India. Its yield (about 2000 kg/hectare) will be significantly greater than those of the
existing varieties and because its size will be uniform, it will be amenable to mechanical harvesting, an attractive
feature for farmers in northern India who currently use this technology for paddy.
93
Most important, arhar straw, unlike paddy straw, is green and can be ploughed back into the soil. In paddy straw, the
problem is the high silica content, which does not allow for easy decomposition. In the case of arhar, the farmer, even
after combine harvesting, just needs to run a rotovator to cut the left-over straw into pieces, which can be ploughed
back and will decompose very fast. All this is difficult with left-over paddy stalks that cannot be easily salvaged or
ploughed back (it is very firm). Farmers, therefore, choose the easiest option of simply burning it.
But replacing paddy with pulses (in over half million hectares or more eventually) will have other social benefits. Our
calculations suggest that pulses will use less fertiliser, less water, and fewer emissions, and in addition will replenish
the soil with nitrogen unlike paddy which depletes the soil (see table). Together, pulses production would provide
social benefits that we estimated at Rs 13,240 per hectare. On this basis, we had suggested an MSP for pulses over the
medium term of close to Rs 9,000 per quintal so that it could become competitive with paddy. This would also
preserve the incomes of farmers.
But, of course, we had understated the social benefits of growing pulses. In the report, we had highlighted that there
would be additional benefits: Specifically, the reduced environmental pollution because less paddy would be burnt.
But we were unable to quantify these benefits for lack of data. This needs to be rectified immediately to make public
and transparent the consequences of current policies.
The broader policy lessons outlined in the pulses report have acquired new salience in the light of the pollution
problem. These lessons bear emphasis.
First, the future of sustainable agriculture must be based on encouraging agricultural science and research especially
where Indias scientists have done the hard and creative work. Agricultural research institutions must be free from
political interference, must be accorded autonomy, and must reward proven talent.
Second, making the fruits of science commercially viable will require price incentives to be re-evaluated. In the case
of pulses and paddy, a complicating factor that determines the relative incentives is risk. Because of guaranteed MSPs
in paddy, it is less risky to grow than pulses. The Subramanian Committee estimated that pulses production was about
six times riskier than paddy production. To compensate this, the required MSP for pulses would have to be about
Rs1100 per ton greater than otherwise.
Third, pricing in India must increasingly take account of externalities, positive and negative. In the case of agriculture,
that means adapting the current methodology of setting MSPs used by the Commission for Agricultural Costs and
Prices (CACP) that focuses exclusively on private costs and benefits. This tends to encourage socially wasteful
production and specialisation such as excessive paddy production in north India with all the attendant consequences to
which we are grim witnesses. As argued by Professor Ramesh Chand of Niti Aayog and recommended by the
Subramanian Committee report, MSP setting must incorporate social costs and benefits.
94
The burning of rice stalks affords an opportunity to implement a major shift in policy that can reduce pollution while
also promoting indigenous research and science, incentivising pulses production, and rationalising pricing more
broadly. Converting crises into opportunities is the hallmark of good public policy.

not too recent instance was the determined effort to ban the exhibition of the film Ore Oru Gramathiley by a group of
persons who regarded its theme and presentation as hostile to the policy of reservation of jobs in public employment
and seats in educational institutions in favour of Scheduled Castes and backward classes. There were threats of
attacking cinema houses where the film would be shown.
The Madras High Court in an incredible judgment revoked the certificate granted by the Board of Censors to the film
and restrained its exhibition. The Supreme Court promptly reversed the judgment in a landmark decision, S.
Rangarajan vs P. Jagjivan Ram, where Justice K. Jagannatha Shetty, speaking for the court, laid down an extremely
important principle: Freedom of expression protects not merely ideas that are accepted but those that offend, shock or
disturb the state or any sector of the
population. Such are the demands of the pluralism, tolerance and broadmindedness without which there is no
democratic society.
Intolerance has a chilling, inhibiting effect on freedom of thought and discussion. Remember how Galileo suffered for
his theory that the sun was the centre of the solar system and not the earth. Darwin was a victim of intolerance and was
lampooned and considered an enemy of religion for his seminal work, The Origin of Species. Nearer home we have
the example of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, whose efforts for reform, especially for the abolition of Sati, evoked fierce
opposition because of intolerance. We must not revert to those dark days because when that happens democracy is
under siege.
We must combat intolerance and its manifestations resulting in human rights violations by appropriate legal remedies.
However, the crucial point is that tolerance cannot be legislated. No law can compel a person to be tolerant.
Therefore, we must develop the capacity for tolerance by fostering an environment of tolerance, a culture of tolerance.
Stereotypes and prejudices about certain classes and communities must be eschewed. Educational institutions have a
vital role to play in this connection. The immense value of tolerance must be ingrained in the hearts and minds of the
students.
Our Supreme Courts judgment in Bijoe Emmanuel vs. State of Kerala is significant. Students belonging to the faith,
Jehovahs Witnesses, stood up when the national anthem was sung to show their respect but declined to sing along. The
students were expelled by the school authorities. Their expulsion was upheld by the high court.
The Supreme Court reversed the high court judgment. Justice Chinnappa Reddy, who headed the bench, in the course
of the judgment, observed that the students did not hold their beliefs idly or out of any unpatriotic sentiment but
because they truly and conscientiously believed that their religion forbade singing the national anthem of any country.
After a careful consideration of the issues, the Supreme Court concluded: Our tradition teaches tolerance; our
philosophy preaches tolerance; our Constitution practices tolerance. Let none dilute it.
This is a classic judicial affirmation of tolerance. Let us resolve to promote tolerance in our multi-religious, multicultural nation and thereby strengthen and enrich our pluralist democracy which is the pride of our nation.
Certain fundamental duties have been prescribed by Article 51 A of the Constitution. To my mind, the practice of
tolerance is the most fundamental duty of every citizen to curb the growing menace of intolerance.

the EU the government would still be required to achieve that end through constitutionally appropriate means.
Criticism of the courts judgement is also ironic. Prominent members of the leave campaign often argued in favour of
exiting the EU on the basis that it would restore the sovereignty of Westminsters parliament. Nigel Farage of the UK
Independence Party argued in favour of exiting on the basis that it would re-establish the UK as a proud, patriotic
country that makes its own laws in the sovereign parliament. The lynchpin of the high courts judgment is that it is
parliament, rather than the government, which is the appropriate forum for triggering the withdrawal process under
Article 50. It would seem incongruous to suggest that a decision being made to restore the sovereignty of parliament
should not be made by parliament itself.
Finally, the case reinforces that courts and legislatures can be joint collaborators in protecting constitutional rights. At
stake was a large catalogue of rights protected by EU law. The courts judgment reaffirmed that the government could
not, through a single pull of the trigger, expunge these rights without parliamentary scrutiny.

ownership to be eligible for voting rights. This extended the right to vote for most of the free white males in the state.
1807
Under the rule of President Thomas Jefferson, the US this year saw the renewal of a law in New Jersey denying
women their right to vote. From that year on, till 1920, women in America did not have the right to vote in any state.
1828
Legislation is passed enfranchising Jews. The legislation removed any religion parameters for granting voting rights.
Therefore, the state couldnt deny voting rights to white men anymore.
1848
This was an eventful year for the universal franchise movement. When the Marxist movement was picking up in
Europe, America was also witnessing a social upsurge. Anti-slavery activists united with womens rights activists in
1848. A convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York state on womens rights. A former slave and newspaper
editor named Frederick Douglass was present at the convention and delivered a speech that backed universal
franchise. After the speech, the convention adopted a resolution which supported the right to vote for women.
The same year, the American-Mexican war was brought to an end after signing the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. The
treaty guaranteed American citizenship to all Mexicans who were living in US-conquered Mexican territories.
However, voting rights were denied on the grounds of requirement to know the English language and factors like
violent intimidation.
1856
All states gave all white men the right to vote. North Carolina became the last state to remove property ownership
requirements in 1856 for voting.
1868
The 14th amendment to the US constitution was passed which cleared the definition of citizenship. It mandated that no
state can deny any rights of citizenship. The power to regulate voting rights was, meanwhile, still in the hands of the
states. The amendment made former slaves eligible for citizenship in the country. Women still didnt have the right to
vote.
1870
Although the year witnessed passage of the landmark 15th amendment in America that stated either federal or state
governments cant deny voting rights to men on the basis of race. This made the African American population eligible
to vote. However, a rider was involved. Voting taxes were imposed on African Americans, literacy tests were done as
mandatory requirements, violent intimidation was used and other measures taken to indirectly take away their right to
vote as even though the free black male community was eligible to vote, they were not educated or financially well off
to fulfil all the requirements.
1872
Victoria Woodhull was the first woman to run for US presidency. She ran for the top seat in 1871. Although the legality
of her nomination came into question due to the minimum age of 35 years for running for presidency (Woodhull was 34
during the time), its documented that age parameters were not followed religiously during the time. During the time,
interestingly, women could run for presidency, but they did not have the right to vote.
Also, Grand Rapids, Michigan, the place where Republican runner Donald Trump held his final election rally is an
iconic town due to the resistance of women and their attempts to cast their ballot in the Presidential elections. A
woman named Sojourner Truth reached a polling booth on presidential polling day and demanded a ballot to vote. She
was turned away but her attempt created a big buzz. On the same day, Susan Anthony, a resident of Rochester, New
York, attempted to vote at a polling booth. She was arrested and brought to trial.
103
1876
This year a loophole was exposed in the 14th amendment. Native Americans were denied their right to vote as they
were natives and didnt qualify as citizens according to the definitions laid down in the 14th amendment.
1882
Chinese Exclusion Act is passed. The acts prohibits naturalisation of any individual of Chinese descent as American
citizens.
1887
The Dawes Act was passed in this year that gave citizenship rights to native Americans if they were willing to give up
their affiliations to their tribes.
1890
Newly admitted Wyoming is the first American state to legislate womens voting rights in its constitution. Also, the
native American naturalisation was made similar to the immigrant naturalisation processafter their formal application
is approved by the authorities.
1912
Womens rights movements attained massive pitches compared to the past and women marched on streets in New York
and Washington DC to demand their right to vote.
1919
Native Americans who served in the US army in the first world war are given citizenship by the US govt.
1920
During the presidency of Woodrow Wilson, this momentous year in the history of US democracy saw the passage of
the 19th amendment which guaranteed the right to vote for women in state as well as federal elections.
1922
The US Supreme Court held that the people of Japanese descent were not eligible for citizenship. The following year
it also held that Asian Indians were ineligible for citizenship.
1924-26
The Indian Citizenship Act is passed in 1924 that gives citizenship to Native Americans but many states pass policies
and legislations that obstruct them from them their right to vote. In terms of women, till this time only white women
were allowed to vote. In 1926, a group of African-American women in Birmingham, Alabama were beaten up brutally
by election officials for trying to register as voters.
1947
A Native American name Miguel Trujillo, who was also a retired Marine soldier, took the state of New Mexico to
court for not letting him exercise his voting right. After he won the case, New Mexico and Arizona, two states that
were holding out the rights to Natives, had to grant it to all Native Americans.
1952
The McCarran Walter Act was passed during this year that made all Asians eligible for citizenship and after
naturalisation, voting rights.
104
1961
Curiously, the citizens of Washington D.C. dont have a Congressional representative. Also, it was only in 1961 that
the 23rd Amendment gave the Washington D.C. citizens the right to vote. Historically, population of AfricanAmericans has hovered around the 50 per cent mark in the US Capital.
1963
The civil rights movement picked up steam. Thousands of civil rights activists of the Freedom Summer movement
converged on the South to demand voting rights for African Americans to be guaranteed as civil rights. Till now,
African Americans were denied their right due to violent intimidation and restrictions like literacy tests and taxes on
voting.
1964
The 24th amendment is passed which mandated that the voting rights will not be denied if a citizen fails to pay taxes.
Voting taxes were repealed throughout the country.
1965
After as many as 189 years of independence, America passed the Voting Rights Act in 1965. The law took away all
discriminatory powers away from states meant to deny voting rights to individuals. It also laid down provisions to
strictly implement it across the US.
1966
Even after the passage of the law, social change was not immediately seen. Civil rights struggle continued. Activist
James Meredith was shot in between the Walk Against Feara march between Tennessee and Mississippi for
encouraging voter registration. Over 4,000 black Americans came out the next day to register as voters. Other
prominent leaders of the civil rights movements like Martin Luther King Jr. and Stokely Carmichael carried on with
the march as Meredith recuperated after his injury. The latter joined the formers during the culmination of the march in
Mississippi.
1971
After wide protests following the Vietnam war, the minimum voting age was reduced to 18 years. The argument given
was that if 18-year-olds were old enough to fight a war then they were old enough to vote in elections as well.
1975
Another change was brought to the Voting Rights Act. The new change read that voting material during the election
must be made in certain language apart from English so that voters who are not familiar with the English language are
also able to understand the material and cast their vote properly.
1993
The National Voter Registration Act is passed which makes voter registration facilities available at offices of the
Department of Motor Vehicles, and public assistance and disabilities agencies. The move initiated during the Bill
Clinton presidency was aimed at making the voter registration process easier and increasing the registered voter pool.
TIll this year, the people eligible to vote in the US included White men and women, Native Americans, AfricanAmericans, Asians, Citizens over 18 years of age. Citizens of American colonies were still not eligible to vote.
2000
Barely a month before the presidential election, a federal court held that the 4.1 million people living in American
colonies like Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, American Samoa and Guam are citizens but are not eligible to vote. They
do not have the right to vote in presidential elections and do not have Congressional representation as well.
105
2001
A massive debate started over the issue of allowing convicted felons to regain their voting rights after they complete
their prison sentence. The recommendation was made by the National Commission on Federal Election Reform. Till
this time, around 4 million American citizens could not exercise their voting right because they had a history of felony
convictions. Even now, in many states, especially the southern states, convicted felons are not allowed to vote during
their sentence or when they are out on parole. In the American social demographic, one can see that most of the
convicted felons are of colour and financially weak.
Continuing with post-civil war practices to stop black Americans from voting, the people with criminal records are
prohibited from voting in any election in these states. A total 5.85 million Americans with past criminal records are
not eligible to vote in this Tuesdays polling as well due to life ban on voting for these people in states like Kentucky,
Virginia and Iowa, Florida where disenfranchisement laws are imposed for offences that may not even draw custodial
sentences.
2002
Help America Vote Act is passed in response to the controversial 2000 election which came under allegations of
calculated exclusion of voters through life bans on voters with criminal records. The act started massive voter reforms
which included electronic voting, provisional ballots, computerised voting lists that would be centralised, access for
the disabled and mandating that first time voters must present a voter id before voting.
2009
Military and Overseas Empowerment Act is passed. It eases troops and American expats to cast their vote through
absentee ballots and allowing requests to be made via mail or email.
2013
The most recent reform took place three years ago. The American Supreme Court struck down a part of the Voter
Registration Act to ensure fair political representation of minorities. The court said that lawmakers will need to take
prior federal permission for changing any voting regulations in states that have a history of discrimination against
minority voters.

Chhattisgarh and the Maoist issue: How the publics silence allows
the state to act against activists | The Indian Express
Written by

Published:November 8, 2016 2:35 pm
While the immediate blame rests with the BJP government, the people of Chhattisgarh have their fair share of
complicity. The state has been facing the Maoist problem ever since its inception in 2000 yet no genuine civil society
movement has emerged there. Its easier for the police to burn the effigies of outsider activists when in-house
activists or media voices are absent. Quite often, in fact, people welcome the police action against such people. Jha
recalled, after spending seven years in jail, that his friends spread across the media fraternity, swiftly deserted him
after his arrest.
The Andhra Pradesh experience tells us that a vibrant civil society creates a buffer zone between the insurgents and the
Establishment, raising tough questions, forcing both sides to introspect and come to the negotiating table. However in
Chhattisgarh, barely any prominent lawyer or writer has emerged to challenge the police narrative.
There are many prominent names in the field of art and music: Raipur-based Sahitya Akademi winner Vinod Kumar
Shukla, a major name in modern Hindi literature, is a native of the state. There are others like Teejan Bai but their
voices are never heard on the Maoist insurgency. This local silence has obviously enabled the Establishment, allowing
it to act against activists despite the CBIs criticism of the states forces in its recent report in the Supreme Court.
Chief Minister Raman Singh celebrated the sixteenth year of the states formation this month, with Prime Minister
Narendra Modi as the chief guest. The recent flare up should remind the state and its citizens of the promises they had
111
made to themselves when the separated from Madhya Pradesh. The separation had become imperative because Raipur,
having been continuously neglected by Bhopal, wanted to chart its own destiny. The recent incidents in Bastar have
raised questions over those promises.

What drew you to the cinema of Nasir Husain?
As a child, I watched Husains Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973) and Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977) several times over.
Then there was Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992) for which he wrote the dialogues. I was enamoured by this filmmaker
who had achieved so much, yet precious little had been written about his legacy. I wanted to correct that. I consciously
stayed away from writing Husains biography. I wanted to celebrate Husain as a filmmaker, as a master technician. I
wanted to contextualise his place among the many great filmmakers of Hindi cinema by examining the dominant themes
and tropes in his cinema. Any other approach would have diluted Husains significance as an auteur.
What makes him a modern filmmaker?
The Husain film universe has a very modern, cosmopolitan feel. There was a celebration of a certain Anglophone-club
culture in his films. Mobility, holidaying, setting out on a journey, all gave his films such as Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai
(1961) and Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon (1961) a picnic-like feel. Unlike many filmmakers of his time, he didnt have a
problem with Western cultural influences. The youth in his films went to clubs, hotels and had a good time. The
characters took part in youth festivals, beauty contests and dance competitions. His hero was flamboyant, urbane,
sophisticated and unshackled from the weight of the world, which was a definite breakaway from the earlier Hindi
film hero. For instance, Shammi Kapoor in Tumsa Nehin Dekha (1957) and Rishi Kapoor in Hum Kisise Kum Naheen
(1977).
How do you think Husain managed to successfully rehash the same formula time and again?
Husain was a master at updating himself according to new trends. The formula involved a musician protagonist, the
lead pair setting out on a journey as well as the popular lost and found element all these playing out mostly in a hill
station setting. So if the musical hero that he first presented in the Shammi Kapoor-starrer Dil Deke Dekho (1959) is
very much modelled on Elvis Presley, then his musical heroes in later films like Yaadon Ki Baaraat and Hum Kisise
Kum Naheen are influenced by the Woodstock generation, the coming of disco and films like Saturday Night Fever.
116
The music in his films was consistently good. Much of Husains musical sensibilities were instinctive. Both Mansoor
Khan (his son) and Aamir Khan (his nephew) repeatedly told me that he had a knack for picking the right tune. Even in
his choice of music composers whether it was OP Nayyar for Tumsa Nehin Dekha and Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon, or
RD Burman in later years for Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Caravan (1971), Baharon Ke Sapne (1967), Zamane Ko Dikhana
Hai (1981) he struck collaborations with the best and then managed to get the best out of these composers.
Many of Husains films have moments where a Western song is being played. It showed his love for Western music.
He adapted that love to Hindi cinema by introducing a Western-styled musician character in Dil Deke Dekho. Before
that film, musician characters in Hindi cinema were Urdu poets, ghazal singers, historical figures such as Tansen and
Baiju Bawra and therefore rooted in a certain Indian tradition.
What are the perceptible influences of Husains brand of cinema on other filmmakers?
With Husain, you had a filmmaker in whose narrative, courtship between the hero and the heroine played a very strong
part. There was a celebration of songs and the songs themselves were woven very tightly into the narrative. A lot of
mainstream commercial filmmakers today like Karan Johar, Ayan Mukerji or Imtiaz Ali use a lot of these aspects of
Husains filmmaking. Even Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) where Raj and Simran fall in love while travelling
through Europe, is a repetition of what happened in Nasir Husains films.
Which five films of his would you recommend?
Dil Deke Dekho, his second directorial venture, which sets the framework for what Husain does in his later films.
Teesri Manzil, which was written by him and directed by Vijay Anand, which merges the sensibilities of two very
good filmmakers. Baharon Ke Sapne, a film with which Husain broke the mould and made explicit his politics.
Yaadon Ki Baaraat, which is his best film just for the manner in which he integrates the Salim-Javed world with his
own. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, which was directed by his son Mansoor Khan, but for which Husain wrote such crisp,
funny and youthful dialogues at the age of 66.

Parineeti Chopra was seen draped in a traditional sari from Jade by Monica & Karishma. Celebrity stylist Sanjana
Batra complemented the look with traditional temple-style jewellery and gold jhumkas. Her make-up and hair was
perfect too, as she matched the pink of her lip shade to that of her sari and went with winged eyeliner and a bindi to
define her look. A braided updo with a gajra rounded it off. We do believe this might just be the first time Chopra has
been seen in this avatar, and we love it. If she goes the traditional way more often, we at least wont be complaining!

For the first presidential debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, she chose an oxblood-red form-fitting
suit. However, for the next two sessions she kept it simple with mostly shades of monochrome. Our favourite is
Clinton in the navy-and-cream shawl-collar suit she wore to the second presidential debate in St Louis, Missouri.
Other designers are also coming out in her support. Recently, Donna Karan, the woman behind one of Clintons most
iconic dresses the black, cold-shoulder jersey number she wore in 1993 posted a #TBT photo on her Instagram
with the caption, . . . The first woman to wear my cold shoulder dress and now our first woman president to be.

region scrutinised its earlier involvement in Afghanistan and Kashmir. It was then, he says, it picked some of the odium
associated with it. The ISI was depicted as a state within a state as an intelligence agency that was influencing and
controlling Pakistans domestic and international politics and which did not shy away from kidnapping and
liquidating individuals it considered undesirable. Kiessling holds that such assessments might have been true in
some cases, but they were also circulated by politicians and journalists in Pakistan without any substantial proof, and
then adopted unchecked and republished by their international colleagues. He also is sceptical of the perception that
ISI houses various groups pursuing their own agenda and allegedly out of control of even their own leaders.
However, he is no apologist for the spy agency, as he recounts its story from its inception by an Australian-born
British army officer and early undistinguished record in its first two decades including bungling in the 1965 war
(failing agents sent into Kashmir and losing track of an entire Indian division), and its first directive to get rid of a
troublesome opposition leader (the then chief managed to dissuade Ayub Khan). He then details how it actually gained
prominence under Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and then under Gen. Zia, the curious circumstances by which it began managing
the clandestine war against Soviets in Afghanistan (and even beyond), and subsequent notoriety, deserved and
undeserved, until the present.Along with an overview of the ISIs organisation and leaders, he deals credibly with
issues such as the question of its involvement in 9/11 and in shielding Bin Laden, while giving prominence to its
operations against India, including a planned 9/11-type attack in the 1980s.Though such dramatic revelations are not
very frequent, Kiessling, noting ISIs de facto role as an internal intelligence agency, also provides sheds new light
and insight into the trajectory of Pakistani politics from Ayub Khan to Nawaz Sharif (in his third stint). As such, it is
required and compelling read for all students of South Asia, beyond security.

Lack of Vitamin D may rise the risk of bladder cancer: Study | The

Low levels of vitamin D may increase the risk of developing bladder cancer, new research has warned. Vitamin D,
which is produced by the body through exposure to sunshine, helps the body to control calcium and phosphate levels. It
can also be obtained from food sources such as fatty fish and egg yolks. Previous studies have linked vitamin D
deficiency with a host of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, autoimmune
conditions and cancer. In countries with low levels of sunlight, it is difficult to obtain enough vitamin D from food
alone.
Researchers from the University of Warwick and University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire in UK, investigated
the link between vitamin D and bladder cancer risk. They reviewed seven studies on the topic which ranged from
having 112 to 1125 participants each. Five out of the seven studies that linked low on vitamin D levels were exposed
to an increased risk of bladder cancer. In a separate experiment, the researchers then looked at the cells that line the
bladder, known as transitional epithelial cells, and found that these cells are able to activate and respond to vitamin D,
which in turn can stimulate an immune response. According to lead author of the study, Rosemary Bland, this is
important because the immune system may have a role in cancer prevention by identifying abnormal cells before they
develop into cancer.
More clinical studies are required to test this association, but our work suggests that low levels of vitamin D in the
blood may prevent the cells within the bladder from stimulating an adequate response to abnormal cells, said Bland.
As vitamin D is cheap and safe, its potential use in cancer prevention is exciting and could potentially impact on the
lives of many people, she said.

approximately 3109 base pairs of DNA, of which any two people have about 6106 different base pairs, which
translates into a difference of 0.1%. It adds that this minuscule unique DNA, plus the interaction of genetic and
environmental factors, is what leads to our different phenotypic features.

Nayak added that the company has taken into consideration the pricing of Priv into account and that with the launch of
these new phones, BlackBerry will see the brand coming back very strongly.
Once an iconic business phone, BlackBerry lost out to Googles Android and Apples iOS-based smartphones. The
company has been gradually expanding focus on its software business while launching a fewer devices to control
costs.
In September, BlackBerry had announced it would stop designing its smartphones in-house and instead focus on
software and security products. BlackBerry also announced its partnership with Optiemus to distribute and promote its
handsets in the Indian market.
Optiemus will also provide the Priv for Rs 34,990, and the BB10 OS-powered BlackBerry Leap device to enterprise
customers as well.

remain open to working collaboratively to address their questions.
Denham said she did not think users had been given enough information about what Facebook would do with their data
and that WhatsApp had not obtained valid consent. Several other European privacy watchdogs, such as Spains, have
said they intend to contact Facebook about WhatsApps privacy policy change but have not yet done so.
Facebook suggested it would be inappropriate to agree on a specific solution with one regulator before receiving all
the others questions. Enforcement action could ultimately lead to fines. Such fines are small compared with the
revenues of the companies concerned. However, a new EU-wide data protection law coming into force in 2018 would
change that with fines of up to 4 percent of global turnover.
Denham said she would keep pushing the issue along with other privacy watchdogs, notably the Irish authority. It has
the most sway over Facebook, since the US companys European headquarters are in Ireland. Facebook says the data
WhatsApp collects is extremely limited and only a part of that is then shared with Facebook.

Shivaay had a big clash with Karan Johars Ae Dil hai Mushkil during the Diwali weekend. While the KJo film caught
eyeballs for its glossy look and big star cast including Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan,
Shivaay relied heavily upon its storyline and visual effects.

We are busy living our own lives, but we find a great amount of comfort with each other. Earlier, we were not
interacting in that way. Now it has kind of changed, its become different, she added.
Daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and actress-director Soni Razdan, Alia has carved her own niche in Bollywood
at a young age.
After proving her versatility with films like Highway, 2 States and Udta Punjab, she is now looking forward to yet
another fresh performance in Dear Zindagi, which sees her sharing the frame with superstar Shah Rukh Khan. It is
directed by Gauri Shinde.
Gauri is a strong woman and very focused. She knows exactly what she wants. I dont see any difference between a
man director and a women director. She is a very unique director. She talks about simple things in a simple way and
they have such a profound effect on you, the 23-year-old said.
Dear Zindagi is a slice-of-life film with Alia playing the protagonist an aspiring filmmaker, who is on the lookout for
a lot of unanswered questions. The film also features Ali Zafar, Aditya Roy Kapur, Kunal Kapoor and Angad Bedi.

The film marks the second directorial of Shinde, who had last helmed English Vinglish.

Soha Ali Khan feels star kids get opportunity easily, but they need
to prove themselves | The Indian Express
By:
IANS
| New Delhi |
Published:November 8, 2016 1:23 pm
But the 37-year-old actress says, in one way, it is easier for star children as they at least get an opportunity.
It is all about getting an opportunity, but then you prove yourself, added Soha, who has been noticed for her work in
films like Rang De Basanti, Khoya Khoya Chand, Tum Mile, Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns and 31st October.
She says even though she comes from a film family, she did not get a solo actor launch.
Im a star kid and my mother is a superstar and my brother is a superstar, but I hope now people have understood its
not like I got this amazing solo heroine launch. And it has not been easy. It has been a struggle and I have seen lots of
failure, added the actress, for whom movies like Dil Kabaddi, Tera Kya Hoga Johnny and Mr Joe B. Carvalho didnt
fetch great results.
Asked if she is keen to do a project with her mother and brother, Soha said, Its not for me to plan. A writer and
director or producers have to come up with something that makes sense.
Soha has earlier featured with her mother Sharmila in an English language film Life Goes On and has even featured
250
along with Saif in various TV commercials. She found them fun to do.
I know it will be fun working with them in a film, but it has to be a sensible script. And again, I want a good role in
the film, she added.
In her career, Soha the daughter of Sharmila and legendary cricketer and former India captain Mansoor Ali Khan
Tiger Pataudi has worked in Hindi, Bengali and English-language films. She feels that cinema, which was
supposed to be an art, has become 100 percent business.
Since the 1970s, we have been making commercial cinema and non-commercial cinema. There were big budget films
and smaller films that I have also been a part of, where making a lot of money was not the primary objective. Cinema
is supposed to be an art. But I feel that it has unfortunately become 100 per cent business, she said.
Also read: I confront, accept reality how bitter it may be, says Soha Ali Khan
Soha said there was a time when box office figures didnt matter to her. But that is not the case anymore. Now I feel
the atmosphere has become such that you can only work in feature films if you are commercially viable and you would
only be cast if you are commercially viable. So now, box office success does matter to me, she added.
Her 12-year journey in Bollywood, since her debut with Dil Maange More, has flown by, she reflected.
I cant believe that 12 years have gone by so quickly. I cant believe I am as old as I am. The journey has been great
fun. I really loved it.
You shouldnt compare yourself and your achievements with someone elses success. Its about what makes you
content and I am really content.
At the end of the day, she also admits that she is not the most ambitious person. I dont want to be constantly
working. I dont want to be in a rat race. I just want to do enough work to be financially independent and enjoy the
kind of work I do, said the actress, who is married to actor Kunal Khemu.

Akshay Kumar visited the BSF base camp in Jammu on Tuesday to pay tribute to soldiers who have lost their lives in
ceasefire violations and encounter. Addressing the army men at the venue, the actor got emotional and called them the
real heroes. He said, Fortunate that I got the opportunity to come and meet you. I have always said Im a reel hero,
you are the real hero.
Earlier, the actor whose father was also an army man had donated Rs 9 lakh to the family of a martyred BSF
jawan. The jawan succumbed after being targeted by Pakistani snipers in Jammu and Kashmir. This donation came
days after his earlier donation of Rs 80 lakh to the army. Speaking about his action, he had said then, They are
decorated with lot of medals and that is good. But I looked at their faces. The samman was required for them but they
need money too. You have to be practical. I thought how about giving them money and that is when I decided to give 5
lakhs to each family.

wearing safety vests, floating equipment, pads on chest and thighs to protect them from the hard impact. We have
ambulance and speedboats on standby. No stunt is absolutely safe as there is always an element of risk involved.
Thats why all kinds of precautions need to be taken. In this case, I dont know if it was due to the lack of precautions
or something else that cause the tragedy. No actor takes any risk while performing stunts. Its the stuntmen who puts
themselves at great risks and that is why it becomes important to take full measures to ensure their safety.
Geeta Tandon, stuntwoman:
There are two things that are important while performing a stunt- safety and luck. From what Ive seen in the video, it
looks like there was no boat nearby to come and pick them after the jump. While jumping into water from a helicopter
or a height, first and foremost you need to have is a boat nearby so that after the jump you are pulled to safety. It is only
then that your next shot is filmed. If not a boat, there should have been a rope thrown in from the helicopter for them to
hold on to till they are pulled to safety. If neither, at least a life jacket should have been worn to keep them afloat. From
what I have seen, it looks like a case of gross negligence. I also hear that they were not expert swimmers. Why use
amateurs for such stunts? I have been in the industry for 10 years now and I have done a lot of for high-risk stunts but
safety is always taken care of. I dont know on whose mistake it was in this case. Were the producers trying to cut
costs by not having safety measures in place? And how can the artistes themselves take it so lightly when they know
there is a huge element of risk involved and safety is not up to the mark.

The clear distinction between art and parallel cinema that was there in the 70s or 80s is a thing of past now, said
Bhaskar while speaking at the ongoing Indian Languages Festival (ILF) Samanvay. The actress, best known for her
performances in films like Raanjhanaa and Nil Battey Sannata, however, believes most of the big production houses
are still playing safe.
The fact is that still the major chunk of good cinema is being produced by independent producers, she said, adding
that small films, despite the good content, sometimes fail to do well as they dont have a proper platform. Listen
Amaya was a nice sweet movie. It got really good reviews too by film critics. But just because it was an independent
producers movie. I failed to get the release of our liking.
However, with Nil Battey Sannata just because I had access to Anand L Rai and he agreed to come onboard, the
movie had a great run at the box-office. Obviously, primarily its the movie and the content but support from big
production houses can do a world of good, said Bhaskar.
The Tanu weds Manu star also credits social media for providing a helping hand to small-budget movies not
having enough resources to promote their movie. Social media provides a platform for people to give their own
ratings to the movie. Word-of-mouth does the trick and small budget movies benefit from it, she pointed out.
When asked whether gender disparity exists in Bollywood; the actress replied,Its very much there when you talk
about the pay gap. What if I tell you a male actor working for same days as me in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was paid
260
thrice the amount than what I was paid. I was shocked and still am, she said.

There is a story I have in mind which I will write and thats something I will make with him.
Sanjay walked out a free man from the Yerwada Central Jail in Pune on February 25 after serving a 42-month prison
term in a March 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. The actor was sentenced to undergo five years rigorous
imprisonment for illegal possession of arms.
Sinha last directed Sanjay Dutt in the 2006 released film Tathastu. He says Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay are his
favourite stars.
Sanju and Shah Rukh are two of my most favourite people and actors. Every time I start writing something, I have to
think of Sanju and Shah Rukh. Then halfway through, I realize that sometime its not big enough and not good enough,
so it has not happened. They are two of my favourite stars, the Ra.One director added.
Sinha is currently busy promoting his film Tum Bin 2, which he has written and directed. Tum Bin 2 is the second
instalment of Tum Bin, and is jointly produced by Sinha and Bhushan Kumar of T-Series music label.

Recollecting the stunt, Puneet Issar who was the main villain opposite Akshay told indianexpress.com, We had a
helicopter scene in the film where I jump on to a helicopter. I was fighting on ground with Akshay when the helicopter
comes in and I try to escape. The chopper was about six to seven feet high in the air and I had to jump on to the rope,
climb it and then enter the chopper. Akshay was to follow suit and the scene was such that the chopper would take off
with me inside and Akshay hanging from the rope. We both did the stunts ourselves. Akshay was wearing safety
harness while hanging but still it was a very risky affair. As per the scene, I as the villain had to use the helicopter to
try and crash Akshay into running cars and buses. Akshay actually used his feet to run on top of the moving cars and
buses while hanging from the chopper. Had his feet broken any of the glass panes of the bus and his leg got stuck, it
would have been dangerous. We were lucky that nothing happened.
Puneet shudders while thinking about the stunt today. We were young and strong. There was an adrenalin rush. Today I
would think twice before attempting something like that.
Watch Akshay Kumar performing chopper stunt in Ashaant.
While expressing his condolences at the tragic outcome of the Kannada movie stunt, Puneet himself recalled a stunt
266
from his own career that almost ended the life of one of Indias biggest cinematic legends, Amitabh Bachchan. Said
Puneet, In Coolie, I had to punch Amitabh Bachchan and he was supposed to fall behind. We did many rehearsals and
it all went right till then. But during the shoot, he fell behind and banged a board and came forward and unfortunately
my punch hit him.
Recollecting another mishap from the movie Krrish, Puneet narrated, One of the cables with which Hrithik was
suspended broke but luckily another cable was still intact because of which he didnt get injured. Had both cables
snapped, it could have been worse.
Stressing on the need to have good safety measures in place, Puneet said, Every precaution has to be taken care of
while doing a stunt. In case of jumping into a river, one has to be a good swimmer and also have the ability to hold
breath for a long time underwater. There also has to be an ambulance and boats as standby measures to save lives
incase something goes wrong.
