Name: Dustin Johnson

Lesson Focus: To have students efficiently work on defensive
spacing in Omnikin ball while keeping the ball up in the air as long
as possible.
Lesson Title: Omnikin Defense

Date: 11-2-2016
Grade: 4
Class Length:
25 min
Class Size: 26

STANDARDS/BENCHMARK/GLEs:
Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement
forms.
Benchmark 1-E-1: Demonstrates mature form in locomotor, non-locomotor movement concepts, and
manipulative skills.
GLOs: 1-E-1.1: Demonstrates spatial awareness movement concepts for location, individual/partner,
and group activities.
GLOs: 1-E-1.4: Apply all spatial awareness movement concepts for levels with mature forms of
selected fundamental motor skills.
Standard 2: Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor
skills.
Benchmark 2-E-2: Applies critical elements to improve personal performance in fundamental and
selected specialized motor skills.
GLOs: 2-E-3 Demonstrate transferring weight while maintaining balance at fast and slow speeds.
Standard 5: Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.
Benchmark 5-E-1: Demonstrates good sportsmanship and fair play in a variety of settings.
GLOs: 5-E-1.2: Demonstrate respect for all students regardless of individual differences in skills and
abilities during individual and group activities.
GLOs: 5-E-1.3: Work cooperatively with peers in group or team activities.
LESSON OBJECTIVES: (TLW)
Cognitive: TLW identify the defensive strategy of minimizing open space by spreading out across the
court while also using identifying the cues to catching an omnikin ball.
Affective: TLW communicate appropriately and will work together as a team to catch the Omnikin ball
100% of the time by the end of the class.
Psychomotor: TLW demonstrate the defensive strategy of spreading out into open space during a
serve and the proper cues to catching an omnikin ball 75% of the time by the end of the class.
STUDENT LEARNING TARGETS: (TSW/I will)

Cognitive: I will identify the defensive strategy of minimizing open space by spreading out across the
court while also using identifying the cues to catching an omnikin ball.
Affective: I will communicate appropriately and will demonstrate how to work together as a team to
catch the Omnikin ball 100% of the time by the end of the class.
Psychomotor: I will demonstrate the defensive strategy of spreading out into open space during a
serve and the proper cues to catching an omnikin ball 100% of the time by the end of the class.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION:
Cognitive: Students will be asked to identify the defensive strategies we went over in class today and
the skill cues to catching an omnikin ball before leaving class today.
Affective: Students will self-assess their communication and their ability to work together as a team to
catch the Omnikin ball while I also scan the room and ensure this is being done during the whole
class period.
Psychomotor: The teacher will observe students throughout the lesson and will informally assess that
students are using the defensive strategy and are using the catching cues for Omnikin ball while
addressing any issues.

Skill Cues/Instructional Cues Used

Minimize open space when another team is
serving!
Spread out across the room evenly!
Catching cues and teamwork. (eyes on target,
using hands not body, absorb the ball, moving to
help teammate catch the ball)
Holding the ball cues (Tripod)

ACCOMODATIONS:
Students with an injury that can affect their locomotor skills, they can walk or just be a holder when
we hit the Omnikin ball. If injury is too severe, then they can officiate and cheer on their team.
MODIFICATIONS:
Increasing or decreasing the amount of time that a team has to catch and start to hold the ball.
Making the outside boundaries smaller or bigger depending on success.
Use the smaller or bigger ball/object depending on catching success rate.
Adding another ball depending on activity rate displayed by students.

INTEGRATION- COMMON CORE:

Compare spreading out to open space to math and how your odds of catching the ball is higher if you arent all
in one place.

RESOURCES:

SAFETY:
Students will need to display spatial awareness and remain in their own personal space.
Students will need to display the proper skill cues of hitting, holding, and catching an Omnikin ball.
Students should not act inappropriately towards another student.
Students should use equipment correctly and responsibly.

Activity Description
Anticipatory Set:
Okay class so does anyone remember what we did/went over
yesterday!?
What were the skill cues that we used?

Skill/Teacher Cues
Address safety issues if needed.
Well besides holding and hitting,
we also need to know how to play

Okay so we have worked on hitting and holding, what do you

think we have to work on next?

Transition
Okay so can I have (picks 6

the rest of the students get in a circle around them.

of the gym? Then can I get
everyone else to make a bigger
circle around the smaller circle,
facing inward?

the ball in demo.

Transition
Put the ball in the circle.

Okay so the clock starts in 3,2,1

Instant Activity Game Play:

We will play the first game one time possibly two if they
are very eager to play another.
Then we will play the second game as many times as
possible so I can get as many people as I can running after
the ball.

Address safety if I need. Go over

demonstrations again if I have to.

Activity Description
Skill Instruction: Dont crack the eggs!
Okay so in Omnikin ball we have to be able to work as a
team and be able to keep the ball in play! So for this game,
we are going to work on volleying the ball. Does anyone

here know how to volley the ball? Well we are going to do

our best and work as a very big team to make sure that the
ball doesnt hit the ground. You all will spread out across
the play area at least two arms-length away from your
neighbor and make sure none of the Omnikin balls hit the
ground by volleying it up into the air. In order to volley the
ball you need to have two hands over your head, open
hands, and fingers spread out! Then push the ball into the
air! We dont want to punch the ball into the air, we want
to have control of where the ball goes.

Fingers spread out!

Transition
Separate students into teams and have them put their
pennies on.

Watch for safety.

Skill Practice:
Do the activity then possibly make the boundaries bigger and
smaller.

Same cues as above.

its at or just bring it to me.

Activity Description
Culminating Activity Instruction: Omnikin Volleyball

Skill/Teacher Cues
Watch for spatial awareness.

Okay so who here has heard of volleyball? Awesome! So

were going to play a game very similar to that game. We are
going to stay in our same three courts as we did yesterday.
There will be either four or five players per team and the
object of the game is to hit the ball to the opposite side so that
no one can get to it. The ball has to be hit over the head and
cannot be hit with a level swing. Hands must be over your
head when you hit it.

Hands over your head!

Open hands!
Fingers spread out!

Transition
Count students off in numbers that I have predetermined
(random) to go get pennies and to get to their assigned
court.

Be organized.

Dont punch the ball into the air

Watch for safety and try to get

them counted off as fast and
organized as possible.
Culminating Activity/Skill Application:
Okay class so now before we
Have students play one game for a minute or so while giving
can volley it over the net we
feedback.
have to pass the ball to all of our
teammates so everyone gets to
Then have teams switch courts so everyone can play everyone. touch the ball.
Also after the first or second game, require students to have to

hit the ball to all of their teammates before they can pass it
over.

Transition
Okay can I get everyone to come over to me with all of
the equipment and sit down right in front of me?

7,6,5,4,3,2,1

CLOSURE:
Okay so what do you all think about Omnikin ball so far!?
What skills did we work on today?
What are some of those skill cues?
Alright well I hope you had a good day! Everyone can now go get water and line up!

not? How do you know?
