The impact of movies in books

movies affect your brain and
body in ways you may not be
able to detect. Because many
films transmit ideas through
emotion rather than intellect,
they can neutralize the instinct
to suppress feelings and
trigger emotional release,"

psychologist focusing on
movies as therapy, and author
of "E-motion Picture Magic.

By eliciting emotions, watching movies can open doors that otherwise

might stay closed. The best films you can pick are comedies since
laughter can offer you distance from your problems and enhance your
sense of well-being. In fact, numerous studies have shown that laughter
can help your immune system and decrease stress. (Movies may cause

Benefits of reading at an early age!

Parents can develop reading habit in their children as early as their first few months by reading to
them. Many studies have demonstrated that reading to children has many positive effects. For example, a
study was made in Rhode Island Hospital to compare two groups of eight months old one group was read
too often as babies, while the other was not. It was shown that those who were read to have their
receptive vocabularies (number of words they understand) increased 40 per cent since babyhood, while
the non-reading group increased by only 16 per cent. The love of reading has so many benefits. Some of
them are: pleasurable experience to him that he will have a positive attitude towards reading as he grows
up; it calms your child, especially when he is restless. It promotes increased communication between you
and your child. Your child learns early the basics of reading a book, which words represent sounds and
concepts, words are read from left to write, and stories continue when you flip the page. It promotes longer
attention span, which is an important skill for your kid to be able to concentrate, etc.

Reading helps you acquire language

Reading helps acquire vocabulary in different kinds of ways. Books often include unfamiliar words,
and repeat the same words in a variety of sentences throughout the book, which helps understand the words.
Reading also makes it possible to learn a language. People often read to see how the language fits together,
how the language flows, and to see what differentiates the written language from the spoken language. In
other words, by focusing your attention and awareness on different elements of the language you are reading
you can deepen your understanding of it and hence you may well accelerate your learning.

Too often, we tend to depend on an explanation to how things work.

This is what happens to reading in most of the cases, where the picture of
the story depends on how the reader interprets it. At some occasions, we use
movies in order to understand better how characters portray through the
story. This is why movies have had an impact in students: by making them
dependent of what they can see in order to apply later whats been expressed
on the story of the book. So, for this matter, an interview was made for
students from 8th grade to 12th in order to observe their point of view and
prove how movies have impact their reading methods.
The results of the interview showed that students prefer to watch
movies than to read because it requires less work. On the other hand, some
consider reading as a good learning skill in relation to their likes of different
topics that may appear on a story. Even though reading might be interesting
or not to people, it gives benefits to those who practice it. The interviews
showed that it was not about what students like or not, but that they are
concerned of the importance of reading even though it requires taking more
time. Reading includes skill benefits such as: comprehension, increasing of
vocabulary, knowledge on the topic exposed, desire to learn, keep mind
working and writing differently according to the exposition of new words.
To read is more than an option; it is a door to new ways of
investigation in literature and life. Reading helps people to analyze and have
better tools for relating with the unknown as something
2 gain and acquire.
At some times, it can be a gift of been wiser and holding to an advice;
others, it can be the instrument for creating a new perspective; its about the
point of view and how we are open to change for the goods.

Qu significa la puertorriqueidad?

Ms que un gentilicio es un sentimiento ese amor que nosotros los puertorriqueos tenemos por nuestra
isla, inclusive en la distancia. Muchos se creen que, porque nacieron aqu y usan camisas alusivas a nuestra
patria, y ponen en sus carros muchos stickers de la bandera son puertorriqueos. Que hablan un espaol
vago y hasta porque comen arroz con gandules son puertorriqueos. Para m, el verdadero puertorriqueo es
aquel que conoce su cultura, la quiere, la estima y la promueve a donde quiera que ellos vayan. Que si le
preguntan quin era Eugenio Mara de Hostos, un Ramn Emeterio Betances, incluso si le preguntan el
significado de su bandera o de su escudo sepan decir lo que realmente es.

Aparentemente existen ten tres tipos de puertorriqueo: 1) Nacidos en Puerto Rico (jusolis) que estos son
que sus padres no son de Puerto Rico y aunque no viva en la isla, simplemente por nacimiento. 2) Son hijos
de Boricuas (jus sangrini) son aquellos que nacen en otro pas, pero ambos padres son boricuas. 3) O
simplemente aquel que desee abrazar y asimilar a nuestra cultura. Un ejemplo de esto es el gran cantante
Tony Croatto. Un hombre que al no tener ninguna de las cualidades anteriores, es decir, que ni naci aqu y
tampoco de descendencia puertorriquea, l adopto nuestra cultura, hizo sus aportaciones e incluso que hoy
en da desconocen que l no es puertorriqueo.
En mi opinin, lo ms bello de ser puertorriqueo es la mezcla de razas que tenemos, nuestra cultura,
nuestra hospitalidad y todo eso es lo que nos distingue. Me encanta disfrutar de nuestra msica (no solo en
navidad), el canto del coqu, noches llenas de estrellas, nuestras playas, etctera. Aunque a veces saldr de
mi isla siempre la tengo en mi corazn. Cuando viajo siempre me encuentro con otros puertorriqueos y le
hablamos a los dems de todas las maravillosas cosas que tiene y es mi Isla. Es cierto que nuestra islita no es
perfecta, pero tenemos los mismos problemas que cualquier otro pas tiene, lo importante es no quedarse de
brazos cruzados y sacar esto palante

Celebremos la Paz!

El pasado 28 de octubre de 2016, celebramos en da de la paz en nuestra escuela. En ese mismo da se llev
a cabo una competencia relacionada al mejor diseador de la camisa para la paz. A continuacin, el diseo
de la camisa ganadora de la competencia, obteniendo el primer lugar de duodcimo grado, la estudiante
Joymalie Vzquez.

Stress is impulsive, disordering, and in the most of the cases; mortal. Sometimes is painful, or simply a vibe that
can being used to move us for make things (no discarding the emotions that we present during the making).
According to an investigation presented by the American Psychological Association in 2013, the so-called
"Millennial" generation turned out to be the most affected ones from this pathology, exposing that individuals of
18 and 33 years are the most affected by stress.
This, is our generation? Yes. You can see it in your community, in your friends, in you! Many times, we are so
distracted in what we have to do and we forget how stress are affecting us in many particular ways. Health gets
introduced here, and specially, in the most important and biggest organ of our body; the skin.
Can you have spots on your skin from stress?
If you ask yourself about what youre stressful now, what comes to your mind? The test for the next week, the
sports practices, the pop quiz that the teacher gave to you the grades of the META test, or the students from
eleven and twelve grade; when it comes the College Board/ SAT results? I need to know it now! Many emotions
for our future, right?
Telling you not to be stressed now would be an ironic and incorrect response. We basically need stress at some
point in order to wake up to something. But something that is important to emphasize is that everything in excess
can be dangerous, and your skin is mistreating you with stress, in case you have not noticed!
Share me the solutions!
Many scientific investigations are proving that the best way to combat stress are musical therapy, practice a sport,
read, or simply breath many times in a slowly way to send oxygen to the brain and relax them. This last one, is so
important for make good decisions that sometimes are affected by stress. Some consequences of the stress in the
skin are spots and rashes on the skin in general (in children and adults), spots on the face, stains on hands, and in
worst cases; dermatitis.
And now, you will be aware to reduce stress for your skin? Your skin will thank to you!

Math in Sports

Math plays an important role in every aspect of our lives. Basically our lives rely on things related to
math. Two of the many factors connected to math that control our lives are time and money. As humans we
are greatly affected by the quantity of money or time we have left to finish our duties and obligations.
Without money, we can't buy food or clothes and shoes. Without it we can't pay the house, phone, water,
electricity, car, school materials, uniforms, medicine and of course, sports. Lets not talk about time! It's
what everybody needs... just a little more time to finish what can't be done in 24 hours because it just isn't
enough. But like Jim Rohn says, "Either you run the day, or the day runs you." On the other hand, we live in
a country where time flies by without us knowing it, leaving us wishing for a little more. Yet, in my opinion,
time is more valuable than money. How's that, you ask. Well, you see, you can get more and more money,
but time is irreplaceable. Once you waste it, it's gone. Spend time in what really matters, you will never get
back that portion of your life. Moreover, another activity related to math that requires time and money is
doing sports! So exiting right? It's incredible how you can feel the adrenaline pumping through your body
and giving you the power and energy you didn't know you had, only by exercising! Sports are important as
they improve and strengthen the overall activity and function of the mind and body. Did you know that
sports have a direct connection with math? Well, they do! Below, examples of some of the sports that are
math related are shown. Keep in mind these are only some of the ways they are related to numbers, since
there is way more, I'm sure.
Softball and Baseball- Quantity of bases, players, innings, strikes, outs and pitches. Also the length
and width of the park.
Basketball- The height and weight of each player for their record, the length and width of the court
and the height of the hoop. Quantity of points, players, time and the quarters in each game.
Boxing- Quantity of punches each person gave and received. The time, height and weight of each
person. The length and width of the boxing ring. And the amounts of wins, lose, and knock outs each of
them has in their record.
Volleyball- The positions in the court, the height of each player and the net, and the length of the
court. Quantity of serves, errors, passes, points, time, and quarters.
Chess- Quantity of pieces and spaces, time each player has to make a move, how much each piece is
worth, direction each piece moves, and the losses and wins each player has had.
Soccer- The length of the field and the net. Quantity of players, goals, fouls, and penalties.
Track and Field- The meters each runner has to cover, the quantity and number of each lane, time it
took for the runner to reach the finish line, and the position the runner finished.
Swimming- Quantity of lanes and swimmers, the meters each swimmer has to cover and the time it
takes them to do it.

Diving- The meters they have to jump, how deep is the pool, quantity of flips and turns they have to
do, the score they receive after each performance.
Weight Lifting- The weight of each contestant and how much weight they can lift depending on their
category.
Tennis- Quantity of points, serves, and sets. The length and width of the court and the height of the
net.
Bowling- The weight of the ball, the number of pins you have to hit, the points gained, the speed of
the ball and the distance the ball has to go through to hit the pins.
Rugby- Quantity of points of the game, penalties and players. The angle needed to throw the ball, and
the measurement of the field.
Ballet- Quantity of steps in the choreography, of leaps, turns and. The length of the music and the
choreography.
Cheerleading- The length of the music and routine. And the quantity of steps in the choreography,
people in each team, flips and turns each one has to do.
Gymnastics- The length of each routine, the score each gymnast receives after her performance.
Quantity of flips turns and twists in each routine. The number of requirements needed to fulfill the routine,
the height and speed at which the gymnast jumps. And number of apparatus each gymnast needs to
participate in to complete a competition.

Octubre: Mes del Cncer

En el mes de octubre estuvimos realizando la actividad del cncer. Se invoc que toda la escuela
viniera con una camisa rosada y blanca alusiva al cncer. La estudiante de cuarto ao, Natalia Almedina,
ley una reflexin sobre el cncer. Ella relat una historia de un seor que su hija tena cncer y l usa un
lazo rosado alusivo a su hija que falleci a causa de esta enfermedad.

El pasado 10 de noviembre de 2016 se celebr el Cuadro de Honor de nuestra Escuela. El mismo se llev a
cabo en el Saln Sabanera en Cidra, donde se destacaron los logros acadmicos de los estudiantes con un
promedio de 3.50 o ms. Emphism's News felicita a los estudiantes por su esfuerzo cada da para convertirse
en ciudadanos de bien. Adems, se le agradece a la facultad por la excelente coordinacin del evento.

A Travs de la Historia
La Campechada: una dedicatoria a Elizam Escobar

El pasado mes de octubre, la fiesta cultural La Campechada se celebr en las calles del Viejo San
Juan. La Campechada es un evento que rene artistas, turistas y locales en uno de los territorios ms
apreciados de Puerto Rico; en el cual hay variedad de artistas plsticos, gastronoma, arte y pinturas
vivientes. Este ao el evento fue dedicado al maestro, pintor, poeta y escritor: Elizam Escobar.
Hace 10 meses Escobar fue diagnosticado con cncer en el rea paranasal y en la cavidad nasal, del
cual fue operado y mantiene controlado. Elizam obtuvo su bachillerato en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, y
sigui estudiando en Nueva York. Durante sus aos de estudios se uni a un club secreto llamado: Fuerzas
Armadas de la Liberacin Nacional. En abril 4 de 1980 Escobar fue uno de los 11 arrestados de la FALN
por el FBI de Illinois. Fue sospechoso de bombardear instalaciones federales. El 7 de septiembre de 1999
fueron liberados por el presidente Bill Clinton. Escobar regreso a Puerto Rico rpidamente luego de
liberado. Actualmente Elizam es profesor de la Escuela de Artes Plsticas en San Juan, Puerto Rico.
El Instituto de Cultura Puertorriquea, ICP, dice que miraron a nuestra historia reciente, y vieron la
figura importante que ha tenido Elizam; y por eso se le rindi homenaje en La Campechada. Elizam se
sinti honrado de haber sido el punto focal en la actividad de pinturas y grandes artistas puertorriqueos.
La especificidad del arte (su identidad y su diferencia) surge en su traspasar (transfixin) los
aspectos de arbitrariedad y equivalencia del cdigo lingstico e ideolgico. Slo sucede a travs de una
esttica basada en el intercambio simblico de la obra artstica. La esttica tiene que ver no slo con los
criterios de lo bello, la calidad, lo sublime, etc. sino con su capacidad para intoxicarnos simblicamente y
revelarnos las estructuras mismas del pensamiento y la consciencia. La prctica del arte est entroncada en
el mismo movimiento de la contradiccin y, simultneamente, en la necesidad de establecer en relativa
permanencia sentido y significado del mundo, la existencia, la vida. En este sentido, el arte es el lmite de la
libertad y la continuacin de la vida por otros medios. El arte no posee una epistemologa per se sino la
presentacin de la vida misma a travs de los medios artstico-simblicos que nos revelan, descubren,
inventan y plasman lo que percibimos y concebimos del mundo en otro plano de la consciencia. Podemos
llamar esta capacidad del arte su poder heurstico, cuya finalidad no es probar alguna verdad o falsedad
sino revelrnosla sin necesidad de evidencia externa. El arte es su propia evidencia. Elizam Escobar

Cantautor Puertorriqueo: Manolo Ramos

Manuel Manolo Ramos, naci el 4 de marzo en Puerto Rico, es un cantautor puertorriqueo que
dicho sea de paso gan el Festival Mundial de la Cancin representando nuestra isla, y que actualmente vive
en Miami, Florida. Manolo ha participado tres veces en el Especial del Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, en el
cual este ao estar cantando una cancin de su autora La Tierra de Pap. Les invito a ver el Especial del
BPPR en diciembre 4 en todos los canales locales. Aqu est la entrevista que tuve la oportunidad de
realizar:
Cules han sido tus influencias musicales?
Bueno, pues mis influencias musicales no son artistas comerciales. Mis influencias musicales son:
Joaqun Sabina, Joan Manuel Serrat, Silvio Rodrguez y Pablo Milans (viene siendo ms trova que nada).
Mi msica no es muy comercial, hago cosas comerciales porque mi trabajo es componer para cadenas, como
Univisin, y tengo que componer los jingles, canciones de novelas y canciones de series que el cliente
quiere. Si me piden una cancin que se parezca a alguna, pues es otra cosa. Ya que no es para m como
artista, sino para complacer a un cliente y eso es uno de mis trabajos, que es componer. Pero para m, pues lo
que me gustan de verdad es la trova, ms la letra, la cancin, no pensando en una cancin que se pegue o
que sea repetitivo, para que todo el mundo lo aprenda. El propsito de mi msica no es esa, por eso no es
comercial.
Cmo ha sido tu carrera fuera de Puerto Rico?
Cuando yo sal de Puerto Rico, sal porque estuve filmando con Sony MG, es una disquera aqu en
Puerto Rico y me di cuenta, que ahora mismo, cuando entr a la msica, cambi mucho todo y todo era
iTunes, todo era bajar msica pirateada y todo era por internet y las redes sociales. La disquera no estaba
haciendo nada por m, y yo decid irme, tratar cosas distintas. Aqu en Puerto Rico yo haba cantado el tema
de una novela, haba ganado un festival representando a Puerto Rico en el 2003, hice varias cosas por ac.
Pero me tena que ir, la disquera no me estaba apoyando; y me fui a tocar puertas. Aparte de cantar, puedo
componer y trabajo como ingeniero de sonido, pues poda buscar trabajo en la msica sin tener que
volverme loco pensando en que tengo que ser famoso, sino trabajar en cualquier cosa, mientras trabajo en mi
carrera, porque solo un 8% o menos de los msicos viven de la msica, y eso es bien triste. Yo, como s eso,
agradezco mucho que tengo un trabajo en el cual estoy creando msica. De paso sigo haciendo mis cosas en
las redes sociales que es una opcin que tienen, los que no tienen apoyo a una disquera y se puedan dar a
conocer. Gracias a las redes sociales he podido estar en el Especial del Banco Popular tres veces, esta va a
hacer la tercera. Me ha tocado tomar de cinco a seis temas de novelas en ms de diez pases. Pero s,
definitivamente me ha ido mucho mejor que en Puerto Rico. Adems, me ha ido mejor en Puerto Rico desde
que me fui, porque lamentablemente, el puertorriqueo, no es hasta que t te vas y ven que haces cosas
afuera que te respetan.
Con qu artistas has trabajado?
Le he compuesto y producido a Melina Len, Jessica Cristina (la cancin Me quiero ir), son en
merengue y balada, mi versin fue en balada. Hace mucho tiempo trabaj con Don Omar; trabaj con Chelo,
Pablo Montero. Prximamente Ednita Nazario grabar un tema mo, llamado, Ser tu Amigo. All en el
canal me ha tocado trabajar con Ninel Conde, Don Francisco y varios artistas ms.

Cmo te sientes de participar en el Especial del Banco Popular?

El primer ao que fue en el 2013, ese ao me toco cantar una cancin que es como un himno para
Puerto Rico, el tema es Soando con Puerto Rico; es una cancin muy bonita, la he escuchado desde nio.
En el 2014, me toco cantar una cancin de uno de mis dolos, que es Luis Miguel, y me toco cantar el tema
La Incondicional; fue una experiencia sper chvere, en el cual fue en la playa Flamenco en Culebra. Lo
importante de esta tercera vez, es que no solo estoy cantando, sino es mi cancin y eso es bien importante
para m, porque ya la gente puede ver, que no solo canto, sino que puedo componer. El tema que hice, no fue
un tema que plane para el Especial. El tema de este especial es La dispora, los puertorriqueos que se
van y son muchos. En Puerto Rico son miles de personas que se van mensualmente. Mi tema habla,
precisamente, es una conversacin donde le cuento a mi hijo, mi infancia en Puerto Rico versus lo que ser
all en Estados Unidos, que es muy distinto. El tema no lo hice pensando en que fuera algo viral, lo hice
para m y para Mateo la tuviera cuando creciera. Resulta, que cuando sub el tema a las redes, en un ratito ya
tena 300,000 vistas y ahora tiene medio milln de vistas. A raz de eso el banco me escucha, y se dan cuenta
que la cancin queda como anillo al dedo al Especial. Me llamaron y yo estaba preparado, listo para subir el
tema a iTunes, con mi arreglo; pero cuando me llaman me detuve y se los di a ellos. Para m ha sido mejor
este ao; dejaron que Mateo saliera en el video.
