I. DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT & CONTENT TYPE (Fact, Procedure, Concept, or Principle):


Students will add numbers from 1 to 9 to find the numbers that make 10 by using objects or drawings.

II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective): Students will add by using common objects using appropriate
vocabulary (addition, sum, and equal)
III. CURRICULUM CONNECTION (How lesson fits into larger unit sequence): In a previous lesson,
students learned to count sequence (ex. 1-10). After this lesson, students will learn how to add numbers
by using pictures, objects and drawings.
IV. INSTRUCTION
A ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activities): Students will be introduced to an addition song, 10
Frame song to become aware of how to add numbers from 1 to 9 in a fun learning way.
B INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology with Student Activities):
C Step #1 Introduction to Addition
a With a bag of small objects students will explore the objects and learn to add the objects to
make 10. What do they notice?
b Teacher will walk around the classroom to observe and listen for vocabulary words and
assist students when needed.
Step #2 Adding with a partner
a Working in pairs, students will add the objects and compare what they both learn from this
activity. What did they learn from each other? How can they help each other out?
b Teacher will walk around the classroom and observe if each students is on task.
Step #3 Students will add numbers from 1 to 9
a Students are understand that one number plus another number will make 10. Students will

participate in class discussion. What do they notice? How did they add the numbers? What
techniques?
b Teacher will observe and record the different outcomes of the students, keeping note of
which students need more time to understand the material.
Step #4 Student complete Coloring the Rainbow worksheet.
a Students will color the rainbow and learn a fun way to add numbers to make 10. Do they
see a pattern? Does this pattern repeat?
b Teacher will observe student work and give positive reinforcements, helping students when
needed.
Step #5 Record and Analyze
a Students will be required showing what they have learned with a fun worksheet.
b Teacher will monitor students analyzing their work.
