To obtain the flow rate measurement by utilizing mass flow meter and
rotameter
To compare flow rate measurement by utilizing mass flow rate and
rotameter.

DISCUSSIONS
The objective of the experiment was to study on the fluid of compressible gas
and obtain the flow measurement by utilized mass flow meter and rotameter and
compare flow meter measurement by utilizing mass flow rate meter and
rotameter . The experiment was conducted by using the Gas Flow Measurement
Bench in order to study on the fluid flow of compressible gas and flow
measurement by using different flow measuring device such as electronic
flowmeter, orifice, venture and rotameter. The experiment was divided into 3
parts
The first part was to determine of the operation and characteristic of mass
flow meter and rotameter. The experiment was run twice, 1 bar and 2 bar .From
the table result in experiment 1, it showed that the value of mass flow meter and
rotameter reading increased, when the pressure decreased. The result obtained
were followed the Bernoullis principle, which state that the speed of fluid occurs
simultaneously with a decrease in pressure or decrease in the fluids potential
energy for inviscid flow of a non-conducting fluid. Moreover, it found that the
reading at both mass flow meter where slightly different than both rotameter
reading in 1 bar and 2 bar. This comparison showed in the figure 1 and 2 .For
example, the value for mass flow meter was 12.8 LPM meanwhile the value for
rotameter (LPM) was 10 LPM. This may be happen due to the effect of pressure
drop along the flow path in the pipelines. The calculated mass flow meter reading
and rotameter reading at standard condition was almost have the same pattern
which the decreased the pressure, the flowmeter and rotameter reading at
standard condition increased.
Next,

for

the

second

part was to

determine

the

operation

and

characteristic of venturi meter. Venturi meter is flow measurement instruments

which use a converging section of pipe to give an increase in the flow velocity.
From the table result, it showed that the value of differential pressure increased
when the rotameter reading increased.

For example, the differential pressure

was 0.34 mbar in 10 LPM while 0.40 mbar when the rotameter in 12 LPM. It is
because in venturi meter, it has a smooth gradual transition down to the throat
diameter and back to the full pipe diameter, the friction loss in venturi meter is
quite small. From the calculation, the value of calculated flowrate was 2.54 LPM
at 0.74 bar when the absolute pressure in 1 bar meanwhile in 2 bar, the flowrate
was 4LPM at 1.74 bar.

For third part was to determine the operation and characteristic of orifice meter.
Orifice meter is a device used for measuring flowrate, for reducing pressure or
for restricting flow. Orifice meter consists of a flat orifice plate with a circular
hole drilled in it. There is a pressure tap upstream from the orifice plate and
another just downstream. The experiment was run twice with absolute pressure
1 bar and 2 bar .From the table result, it showed that the value of differential
pressure increased when the rotameter reading increased.

By comparing the

result from experiment 2, it found that the value of calculated flow rate was
greatly different between venturi and orifice meter. Venturi meter showed the
highest value calculated flow meter than orifice meter. It is because

the venturi

flowmeter has a smaller energy loss than the orifice due of the structure of the
Venturi.

CONCLUSION
The objective of experiment was achieved which is to obtain the flow rate
measurement by utilizing mass flowmeter and rotameter and to compare flow
rate measurement by utilizing mass flowrate and rotameter. In both mass
flowrate and rotameter increased when the pressure decreased in experiment 1.
The mass flow meter at Standard condition was lower than rotameter at standard
condition. For experiment 2 and 3, the calculated flowrate increased when the
pressure decreased .The calculated flowrate in venturi was higher than orifice
meter. The accurate mass flow measurement of gas was difficult to obtain
because the gas was compressible fluid. Thus, it can conclude that the volume of
a fixed mass of gas and rotameter depends on the pressure and temperature.
