1. Electric drive

1) A motor having suitable control circuit develops a torque given by T =a+b and drives a

load whose torque may be expressed as TL=C+d, where a,b,c,d are constants. Determine the
relations among these constants in order that the motor can start together with the load and
run to equilibrium speed and also, estimate this speed.(2014(2 b))-(2011,NR(2 c))

2. Characteristics Of Motors

2) A 240v unsaturated DC shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.04ohms and a field
resistance of 100 ohms.
i)
What resistance must be inserted in the shunt field circuit to increase the speed for
1200rpm to 1500rpm when the supply current is 200A and
ii)
With field resistance found in (i), find the speed when the supply current is 100A

3) A 3 phase, four pole, 400V ,50Hz squirrel cage induction motor develops a maximum torque
of 2.5 times the full load torque at 1200 rpm at rated voltage and frequency. If the motor is
connected to 440v, 3 phase, 50Hz supply ,find the new value of the maximum torque in terms
of full load torque, Neglect stator resistance.(2014(4 b))

4) A 250v DC shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.5 ohms and a field resistance of 250
ohms.when driving at 600rpm a load, The torque of which is constant, the armature takes
20A. If it be desired to raise the speed from 600rpm to 750rpm, What resistance must be
inserted in the field circuit, Assuming the magnetization characteristics to be a straight line.

7) A 250 V dc series motor drives a fan, the load torque being proportional the 1.5

speed. At a certain speed the motor takes 40A.The machine resistance is 0.6 ohms. Find the
extra resistance needed to reduce the speed to one half of the original speed. Saturation may

8) A 10kw, 6pole,50Hz,3-phase induction motor has linear torque-slip characteristic between


zero torque and maximum toque. The slip at which maximum torque of 520N-m occurs is
20%. For mechanical losses of 600 Watts, find the speed at rated shaft power.(2012(OR2)(2)

9) A 200 volts 10 HP motor has shunt and armature resistance of 100 ohms and 0.4 ohms
respectively. Calculate the resistance to be inserted in the armature circuit to be reduced the

A 3-phase, 4 pole,slip ring induction motor has rotor resistance and stand still leakage
reactance referred to stator of 0.2ohm and 1ohm per phase respectively. At full load it runs at
1440 rpm. Determine the value of resistance to be inserted in rotor per phase to operate at a

A six pole, 50Hz, 3-phase squirrel cage induction motor has rotor resistance and stand
still rotor reactance 1 referred to stator of 0.2ohm and 1ohm per phase respectively. With
rated voltage and rated frequency, it runs at full load with 4% slip. Neglect rotor resistance 2
and rotational losses. Determine the operating speed of the motor, when stator voltage
impressed in reduced to 1/2 times the rated voltage, frequency remaining the same if the

resistance of armature circuit is 0.2 ohms and of field winding is 0.1 ohms. Calculate the
speed when 0.15 ohms diverter is connected in parallel to field winding. Assume that the
torque is unchanged and flux is proportional to the field current.(2015 (3 b))

A 220V dc series motor driving a constant load torque runs at 200rad/s and draws a
current of 20A from supply. The total resistance of armature and field is 1ohm. The moment
of inertia of the motor together with the load is 5 kg-m 2. Calculate the total energy dissipated
in the armature circuit if the motor starts from rest and attains the speed of 200 rad/s with in a

be started from rest on no load. Prove that, if the motor were accelerated to the maximum
speed using the high speed winding, the heating of the motor would be twice that which
would be produced from acceleration from rest on the low speed winding and with further

armature current of 20A and has an induced e.m.f of 210V. This motor is started from rest
with a starting resistance of 90 ohms in series with the armature. The moment of inertia of the
motor and the load together is 15 kg-m2.Assuming constant frictional torque of 1 kg-m at no
load during acceleration, calculate the time taken for the motor to accelerate to a speed of 500

70% . calculate the current taken from the supply in order to raise the load of the 500 KG . at

(0.05+j0.4) ohms per phase at 50 HZ. The standstill rotor emf is 100V and rotor current is

(i) 20V per phase is injected in phase opposition to the rotor e.m.f. and
(ii) 20V/phase is injected in phase with rotor e.m.f.

hours .Assume that the motor cools down completely between each load and iron losses

full load. Estimate final temperature rises after 2 hours on full load, hour on 50% over load

50kg-m.calculate the speed at the end of acceleration period. Assume motor speed torque
characteristic to be a straight line in the region of interest and neglect friction and windage.

400C on continuous run at full load. Assume that the losses are proportional to the square of
the load and the motor is allowed to cool down to the ambient temperature before being

Two DC series motors each 1500 volts and armature resistance 0.25 ohms take 500
amps during starting .If the effective weights of the train is 150 tonnes and dead weight of
the train is 120 tonnes ,track resistance of 45N/tonne ,tractive effort /motor 40 KW ,speed at
the end of starting period 40 kmph, find (i)duration of starting period and (ii)the speed of the

being 1km .station stopping time is 20 seconds .Assume braking retardation of 3kmphs and

and rotational inertia is 10%. Find the torque developed by each of the motors and the

A train is required to run between two stations situated 2.5 km apart with an average
speed of 50kmph. Acceleration and retardation are respectively 2 kmphps and 3 kmphps. Find
its maximum speed assuming simplified (trapezoidal) speed time curve. Calculate also the
