ABSTRACT
Background: Based on the World Health Organization (WHO) data, mortality rate in South east
Asia due to cardiovascular disease in 2008 was 25% of total deaths. The prevalence of
hypercholesterolemia in Indonesia for 25-34 years old age-group was 9.3% and increased up to
15.5% for 55-64 years old age-group. The usages of nature ingredients as a medication tend to be
increased. One of the plants that give a positive indication for the treatment of
hypercholesterolemia is celery. Celery has been used for the treatment of several other chronic
diseases.
Objective: To compare the effectiveness of celery (Apium graveolens L.) ethanol extract with
simvastatin to blood cholesterol levels reduction of white mice which have been fed by high-fat
food.
Methods: This research is an experimental research by using pre and post-test with control group
design. The subjects are 25 hypercholesterolemia white mice (Musmusculus) that had been fed
by high-fat food. They are divided into 5 groups which each of group are consists of 5 samples.
The first group was given distilled water, group II was given simvastatin, group III was given 25
mg/day of celery ethanol extract, group IV was given 50 mg/day of celery ethanol extract, and
group V was given 75 mg/day of celery ethanol extract. Data analysis will be performed by using
ANOVA method and will be followed by kruskal wallis.
Result: Based on the research, p score on Anova test is (p<0.05) and shows that there are blood
cholesterol levels differences after the treatment.
Conclusion: The result of the research shows that celery ethanol extract can reducing the blood
cholesterol levels. Particularly on celery ethanol extract distribution in 50 mg/day and 75 mg/day
has a significant score than simvastatin 0.026 mg/day distribution in reducing the mices blood
cholesterol levels.
