ABSTRACT

Currently, basement is one of applicable solutions for limited building area. Before
building a basement, a process of excavation must be carried out first. So a design of
this process is required in order to prevent failure. For this project, excavation has
dimension of 80 meters x 60 meters with 20 meters depth. This project would be
conducted in the overpopulated city and the distance of excavation from the nearest
building is 10 m, so the safety factor of excavation is 1.5 and the limit value of
horizontal displacement is 100 mm.
In this thesis, determining the theme is the first step that has to do. To start the design,
studying the theory about this case is compulsory. The aspect about this case is got
from theory. Collecting the data is the further step for designing. In this project, the
data are from one boring log. The boring log is processed by various correlations to
get soil parameters in the project location. After that, the design of excavation
protection structure is carried out, which includes diaphragm walls and ground
anchor. The protection structure is designed by using PLAXIS 2D software. If the
design meets the limit value of permitted safety factor, this process will be over.
In this design, the diaphragm walls have thickness 1 meter with the depth of
embedment 37.5 meters. The ground anchor is installed in five levels. Horizontal and
vertical spacing of ground anchor are respectively 1.5 meters and 4 meters. The
diameter of fixed section is 350 mm, while the number of strands at each level of free
section is different, between 7-9 strands. The design of anchor is based on FHWA-IF99-015. This design has general safety factor 1.51 and the maximum deflection 82.25
mm. The maximum shear force and bending moment are respectively 748.13 kN/m
and 1912.12 kNm/m.
