Self-Introduction
My name is Katerina Penrose and I am currently attending Mary Lou Fulton Teachers
College at Arizona State University. I attended Primavera Online High School and graduated half
a year early in the winter of 2011. I received a two-year Presidential Scholarship to community
college. I have completed my general education in three and a half years at Estrella Mountain
Community College.
I have always wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl. I was adopted from Russia
when I was ten years old. Although my instructors in the Russian orphanage were very strict,
they helped me to understand math. I have loved math ever since because they gave me a
foundation of understanding. I have been helping my younger sister with her math every year
and I enjoy it. I have tutored a couple of people and I know that being a teacher is the right career
choice for me. I like it when a students face lights up when they get something right in math.
My mom was a teacher for four years and I watched her interact with her students and was able
to see the change in students learning environment. I want to be able to do that for my students
when I become a teacher.
Based on the research of Madeline Hunter, Dr. Fred Jones, and Dr. Harry Wong, my
beliefs about working with diverse student populations is that all students have the right to have
an education. Everyone is different in their own way. As a teacher, I want to be there for each of
my students and provide them with the skills and tools they need every step of the way. Every
student in my classroom will have the opportunity to be able to learn and succeed.

Classroom Arrangement
My classroom has the ability to accommodate about 36 students. The way my classroom is set up
was influenced by Dr. Harry Wong and Fred Jones. This model of the classroom allows the
teacher full access and be able to roam in the classroom. The setup of the classroom will help the
students to interact with one another and creating learning environment around them.
Teacher Desk and Trash Cans
I have teachers desk in the back of my classroom in the left hand corner. I want to be able to see
the whole classroom. By having teachers desk in the back, it will be out of the way and it wont
be too distracting for my students. On teachers desk, I have my computer station where I can
grade my students assignments, roll call and plan my lessons. I also have a telephone on my
desk so I can communicate with the parents and if I need to call the front office. On the right side
of my desk, I have a trash can and a recycling can. I have placed them there so it is easier for me
to throw away my trash. I also have trash can and recycling can by the door and two more on the
right side of the room on each side of the white boards.
Material Cabinets
I have placed the material cabinets in the back of my classroom in the right hand corner. My
material cabinet is open for all the students. I put material cabinets in the back the classroom so
it is not in the way and it is easy access to the materials.
Bookshelves
I love books so I have ceiling to floor bookshelf in the back of the classroom next to the material
cabinet. I put the bookshelf in the back of the room so the students are not sidetracked by the
books. I will have math books and regular books for students to use. Math books are for students
who want an extra challenge and regular books for students who are done with an assignment
and would like to read.

Homework Station
My homework station is also in the back of the room so the students are not disturbing other
students in the classroom. Students are able to work on their homework as a group or I can help
them as a group. Homework station is a great opportunity for students to get extra help with their
math. I will allow students work on their homework in class so if they need help, I am there for
them.
Techers Locked Cabinet and Filing Cabinet
The locked cabinet is in the back of the room next to my desk on the right. The cabinet will be
locked at all time and the key will be with me. The locked cabinet will have important papers
stored in it and my purse. The filing cabinet is located by my desk on the left. The filing cabinet
will also be locked. I will have lesson plans and assignments stored in my filing cabinet.
White Boards and Mounted Projector
I have five white boards in my classroom. I placed three white boards in front of my classroom
and two of them are on the right side of the wall. I want to make sure that I have enough room to
explain my problems in detail. I will also have my students come up and teach the class. I have
learned that sometimes students explain the problems better than teachers. I have mounted
projector in the middle of the classroom on the ceiling. I will use the projector for bell work,
assignments and Kahoot.
Students Desks
I have arranged my classroom in three columns and each column has 12 students. Each student
has an elbow partner. In my classroom, the chairs are office chairs so they can move around
easily. Students are able to turn and work with the person behind them. This way it will give the
students time to work on the assignments. Student desks are big enough for students to use one
desk for two then moving the desk around. In the first column, the last desk is bigger than the
other desks. If a student has a wheelchair, the desk has enough room for the wheelchair and his
or her supplies.

Material and Homework Tables

There are two long tables on the left by the door. The first table is for materials I will put out for
students when they first come in. The second table is where students will turn in their homework.
There are four baskets on the table so all of the homework is not mixed in together.
Late Work Organizer
On the right side of the classroom between the material cabinet and white boards I have late
work organizer. Each pocket will represent the days of the week. This is where students will pick
up their late work if they were absent.
Bulletin Boards and Intercom
I have two bulletin boards on the left side of the room on the wall. The bulletin board closer to
the door is for school announcements and school spirit items. The bulletin board closer to
teachers desk is for procedures, rules and consequences and students work. Students are not
allowed to touch this bulletin board. It is only for teacher use only. I have four intercoms in my
classroom. There is one in the back of the room, one in the front, and one on the right side of the
room and on the left side.

Classroom Procedures
Classroom procedures are important to classroom management because it creates wellstructured and organized classroom. I have set up my classroom procedures based off the
research done by Fred Jones and Harry Wong and they believed that classroom procedures are
taught. There is a quote from Tools for Teaching that was written by Fred Jones that was
interesting to me. Pay me now, or pay me later. Do it right, or do it all year long, this quote
stuck to me because classroom procedures does take time to teach and if it is not done right, you
wont have effective classroom management.
Beginning Classroom
Before my students come into the classroom, I will greet them by the door. This way, I
am able to see what kind of environment I will have in my classroom. After I greet them,
students will turn in their homework in the correct basket and pick up necessary supplies they
need from the table. After they picked up their supplies, students will go to their assigned seat
and take out paper and pencil. There will be bellwork on the board that students need to complete
for points.
Ending Class:
At the end of each class, I will end with a short closure quiz about what students have
learned in class. Before the closure, students will have 40 seconds to pack up their things and
have a pencil and a paper out for closure. They will also make sure that there is no garbage lying
around. After the closure, students will pass their papers to the front and I will collect them as I
check each row to see if the floor is clean. After I collect the papers, I will say Have a great
day and students will get up, push their chairs in and leave the class.

10

Transitions to and from Activities:

I will use two signals to manage the students time on task. The first one is a timer so I
can make sure students are staying on task and transition between the activities is short. The
second signal is auditory signal so I can get the students attention. My auditory signal will be
Pencils down, eyes on me and this will get the class attention. These two signals will help me
as a teacher with smoother transition between the activities and instruction information.

Managing Student Work:

Collecting Homework:
In the beginning of each class, students will be responsible to turn in their homework.
There will be a table by the door and there will be four baskets for each class. Right before they
get into their seats, their homework needs to be placed in the basket.
Handing Back Work:
After I have graded each assignment and recorded, I will hand back students assignment.
While students are working on the bellwork, I will hand out their assignment. I do not want
students to look at each others assignments and judge how the other student did on their
assignment or test.
Handing Out Materials:
There is a separate table for the materials right next to homework table. As the students
come into the classroom, they are responsible to take the materials from the table. After they
have collected the required materials, students will find their assigned seat quietly and start
working on bellwork.

11

Student Absences:
Students who have excused absences will be required to complete the work for the time
they were absent. For example: if a student was absent for a day, he or she has one day to finish
the assignment. There is an absent folder with all of the materials that was covered in class.
Late Work:
I will accept late work from students. Every day it is late; I will take 10% off their final
grade on that assignment. Students will only have couple of days to finish their assignment. After
that, they will receive a zero.
Grading and Recording Student Work:
I will grade students assignments on the same day I receive them. As I grade the
assignments, I will give students some feedback. I will record students work after I am done
grading the assignments.
Communicating with Parents:
There are only couple of reasons why students parents will contacted by the teacher. The
first one is when a student is doing very well and I want to let the parent know. The second is
when a student is misbehaving in class. Before I contact the students parent, I will give that
student two strikes and the third one is calling the students parent. I will also email all of the
parents syllabus and anything that is important going on in the classroom.
Consideration for Diverse Learners:
All of my lesson will be intended for each of the students in my classroom. As a teacher, I
will follow all IEPs and 504s exactly as written. If any of the students need extra help, I am there
for them. I will make sure that all of my students understand the material. If the procedures break
down, I will make the time and reteach it. All of my procedures will be on my bulletin board.

12

Rules and Consequences

The classroom will have five specific and easy to follow rules for the students. These rules are
based on the research of Harry Wong, Richard Lavoie, Fred Jones, and Madeline Hunter and will
benefit the students and the teacher in creating a safe learning environment in the classroom.
Each of the rules will be taught to the students along with the consequences. I will have the rules
and the consequences posted on the bulletin board.
The five classroom rules are:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Think positively.
Keep all personal electronics put away.
Students will remain seated at all times unless otherwise instructed by the teacher.
Students will respect others in the classroom.
Students will keep their hands to themselves.

Consequences will follow due process. Consideration for IEPs and 504s will be made based on
the content of the students programs if deemed necessary.
The consequences in order of offence are as follows:
1.
2.
3.
4.

First Offense- Warning/Conference

Second Offense- Call Home
Third Offense- Detention
Four Offense- Administrative Referral

*The teacher reserves the right to skip steps based upon the severity of the violation.
Through the research of Harry Wong, Richard Lavoie, Fred Jones, and Madeline Hunter I
have expressed my classroom management I envisioned when I start my teaching career. By
creating my classroom procedures and rules will give the students and myself great time to
master all the items and that will allow for better time management. My classroom is
arranged in a way that will create a positive and learning environment. I want to make sure
that I am there for my students when they need help. When students come into my classroom,
13

I want them to feel safe. Every student in my classroom will have the opportunity to learn
and succeed.
