ACID DYES FOR PRINTING ONTO WOOL & SILK

THE FOLLOWING IS A TYPICAL PRINTING RECIPE:
5 30 parts
50 75 parts
185 255 parts
600 parts
20 parts
20 parts
50 parts

DYESTUFF are pasted with

GLYEZIN BC or GLYCERINE (Reduced or omitted for silk when using moist steaming conditions)
HOT WATER. The mixture, which may be boiled if necessary to ensure complete solution,
is added to,
SOLVITOSE C5 (made up as a 10% Thickening) or INDALCA PA3R (made up as a 7% Thickening)
PERMINAL KB and a solution of
AMMONIUM OXALATE in
HOT WATER have been incorporated.

After printing, the goods are dried then steamed for 45-60 minutes at 100C. When steaming prints on wool
maximum yields can be obtained under moist steaming conditions, if unsaturated steam is used or the steam
dries out during steaming, unlevelled prints and poor yields may result. To guard against this you can
condition the printed fabric prior to steaming, by hanging in a cool damp room for several hours.
Another method is to steam for 30 minutes, remove steamer and allow fabric to condition in a cool damp room
before steaming for the final 30 minutes.
WHEN PROCESSING NATURAL SILK THESE PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT USUALLY NECESSARY.
After steaming, prints should be rinsed thoroughly in cold water.
A rinse in METAPEX 26 at 1-2% at 40C for 10-20 minutes can usually be beneficial, especially when requiring
brighter shades.
NOTE: When using fabrics which have not been prepared for dyeing and printing, it is always recommended
to pre-scour fabric in a solution of METAPEX 26.

ACID DYES FOR DYEING WOOL & SILK

Weigh the fabric, scour it and then rinse.
Make up the dye bath as follows:
(1)
Water in a quantity of at least 30-40 times the weight of the fabric. To this is added the solution of,
(2)
DYESTUFF (the percentage being calculated on the dry weight of the fabric). This should be made
into a smooth paste with cold water and then boiling water poured on with stirring until it is completely
dissolved.
In general, the dye bath should be lukewarm when the fabric is entered, raised slowly to the boil and
dyeing continued at the boil for 1 hour.
FOR WOOL
Start with

5 10% GLAUBERS SALT and

2 4% ACETIC ACID 80% Tech in the dye bath.
Boil for 30-45 minutes, then exhaust the dye bath by carefully adding 1-2% ACETIC ACID 80% Tech.
(2 4% FORMIC ACID 85% sometimes works better with Acid Levelling Dyes).
FOR SILK
The material is entered into the dye bath at a temperature of 40-50C and the bath is heated slowly to
95C and dyed for approximately 1 hour.
Dye with the addition of:
5% GLAUBERS SALT and
2% ACETIC ACID 80% Tech.
Thoroughly rinse after dyeing to remove loose colour.

After printing, the goods are dried, steamed for 10-15 minutes in steam that is as air free as possible, then
washed well in cold water. The goods should not be allowed to lie about wet because of the risk of staining the
discharged portions consequent upon slight bleeding of ground shades.
