Coating Application, including mixing and thinning shall be done strictly in accordance with the Paint Material Manufacturer's printed
instructions, and under the supervision of the Paint Material Manufacturer's Painting Inspector.
All paint shall be well mixed, stirred frequently and thinned or strained if necessary, all in accordance with the Paint Material Manufacturer's
recommendations. Addition of Thinner beyond that recommended by the Paint Material Manufacturer, or supply by other Paint Material Manufacturer
shall not be permitted.
All coats of paint shall be applied by brush, airless spray, roller, etc. Such methods of application shall be in agreement with the Paint Material
Manufacturer's method of application, and in agreement with local labour practices, unless objections are stated.
All coats shall be applied in such a manner as to produce a film of uniform smoothness. Special attention shall be given to Crevices, Weld
lines, Corners, edges, etc. to obtain the required thickness. These areas shall be coated first, and if possible, by brushing, before paint
application to other smooth surfaces.
Prior to application of any coat of material, all damage to previous coats shall be touched up with the corresponding specified coating.
Where two or more coats are specified, sifficient time shall be allowed between coats to permit hard drying. A minimum of 24 hours to be
allowed between applications, unless otherwise specified by the Paint Material Manufacturer, but the interval between coating shall not
exceed the maximum interval time in accordance with the Paint Material Manufacturer's printed instruction.
The colour of each coat shall contrast with the previous coat colour to avoid accidental skips and also to facilitate inspection.
Touch - up material shall be the same as, or compatible to, the shop applied coat ( for field erected equipment ). If a compatible paint
is used, the Client's approval for the use must be obtained in writing prior to application.
Paints applied by Air Spray or Airless Spray
Hose and container shall be throughly cleaned before addition of new materials. The spray gun shall be held no closer than 200mm or more
than 600mm from surface to be coated. During application the spray gun shall always be held at right angle to the substrate. Each pass
shall overlap the previous one by 50%. In order to achieve a uniform application, when large surface areas are being coated, spray application
shall be made in two directions so that the passes are right angles to each other. Cover is to be kept on open container of paints when
not in used.
Brush application
Application of brush is acceptable under the following conditions subject to Owner approval:
a) when areas cannot be properly coated by spray for any reason.
b) when spray application is difficult due to location of work accessibility.
c) Above ground level when it is considered that loss of paint under prevailing conditions is excessive.
d) For touch-up or repair of localised damaged paint or to areas of incorrectly applied paint.
e) For painting of stripe coat.
f) When the substrate material to be applied are suitable for brush application.
g) The number of coats shall be adjusted to the dry film thickness to matsch.
Roller application
Application of roller is acceptable under the following conditions subject to Owner approval:
a) when spray application is not feasible.
b) Primer coat is applied by brush.
c) Roller method is acceptable to paint manufacturer and is in accordance with the application data.
Therefore, for the shop primer shall be used Air spray or Airless spray method. For the second and final coat at site, brush and roller application
shall take place due to the location of the storage tanks is too near to the canteen which the air spray or airless spray method is
strictly prohibited.

conditions are likely to occur before the paint has become dry. Paint Application shall not take place under the following conditions :1.
2.
3.
On exterior locations paint application may be suspended due to wind speed at the discretion of the Client.
Painting Instruction
7.4.1
Surfaces, which later will be rendered inaccessible, shall be coated with the specified coatings while the free space is available around the
unit or prior to the installation of covering materials such as sidings or insulations, etc.

of the Intermediate Coat. The balance coating shall be applied later on site, for Storage Tanks and Spheres, after the sucessfully passed the
Hydrostatic Test / Pneumatic Test
7.4.3
All Shop primed or painted metal surface shall be inspected prior to the field paint application. Surfaces that are scratched, marred, rusty
or show other defects in the prime coat film shall be repaired as follows :1.
Thoroughly clean shop coated metal surfaces of all dirt, oil, grease, etc. by wiping with rags, by dipping in suitable solvents, by
sending, or with power tools.
2.
Metal shall be sanded or wire brushed in areas where interruptions in the prime coat films occur or where field weld, fumes or
spatter contamination exists.
3.
All cleaned areas shall be re - primed and repainted with the same type and thickness of paint as used in the workshop, each coat
of new paint overlapping the existing coat by at least 200 mm.
In case where surface preparation does not confirm to original primer requirement, a suitable alternative prime coating may be used
after receipt of written approval from Client. Where epoxy coatings are damaged, suitable repair material supplied by the same
Paint Material Manufacturer of the original coating shall be applied in accordance with the Paint Material Manufacturer's instructions.
