Research Proposal Title: Students Perceptions and Experiences in using E-Learning and
Mobile Learning
Introduction
E-learning and mobile learning might looked similar, but they are actually quite different.
Nichols (2003) as cited in the article by Joi L. Moore, Camille Dickson-Deane and Krista
Galyen (2011), defined e-learning as using technological devices in learning whether webbased, web-distributed or web-capable. While for mobile learning, authors like
Mostakhdemin-Hosseini and Tuimala (2005) as cited in the article defined mobile learning as
the evolution of e-learning.
There are many benefits of using e-learning especially in education. According to Algahtani
(2011), if e-learning is used in suitable ways, the benefits of e-learning can be greater than
using traditional learning. For example, we can access any study materials by using the
internet. While mobile learning is a new medium of learning by using mobile phones. Indeed,
mobile learning can promote new way of learning process which will give positive impacts
on learning outcomes.
Problem Statement
According to Tagoe (2012), in Ghana, there are very few studies have been conducted to
explain why students may accept or reject e-learning which may have far-reaching
implications for teaching and learning. The goal of the study is to help understand how
students perception are critical to incorporating e-learning and mobile learning (Park, 2009).
Objectives
The objective of this study is to investigate students perceptions towards e-learning and
mobile learning. Besides, this study also intends to find out students experiences of using elearning and mobile learning.
Research Questions
1. What are students perceptions in using e-learning and mobile learning?
2. What are students experiences of using e-learning and mobile learning?

Significance of the Study

It is hoped that this study will provide more information in terms of e-learning and mobile
learning. Besides, it will help the instructors to improve learning process by investigating
students perceptions and experiences in using e-learning and mobile learning. Since not
many studies focused on these two aspects, that is why this study will be focused on different
areas so that it will gain interest from other researchers to study on e-learning or mobile
learning.
Limitations of Study
This study focuses on all possible universities in Malaysia. Thus, the sample of this study
may include students from various universities which will be selected randomly. This study
also will only touch on two aspects, which are students perceptions and experiences of using
e-learning and mobile learning.
Research Methodology
Simple random sampling will be used in this research. By using quantitative research
approach, survey questionnaires, adapted from Tagoe (2012) and Rossing et. al (2012) will be
employed in this study. The questionnaires consist of three sections. Some questions that are
taken from Tagoe (2012) and Rossing et. al (2012) will be adjusted according to the
universities students level.
Section A consists of participants demographic data. In this section, information like age,
race, courses and university will be asked. Section B consists of questions concerning the use
of mobile devices and the mobile learning. Multiple choice answers, short answers and Likert
scale (where 5 strongly disagree, 4 disagree, 3 neutral, 2 agree, and 1 strongly agree) will be
used to determine the questions given. Meanwhile, section C consists of questions regarding
the use of personal computer or laptop and the e-learning. Multiple choice answers and Likert
scale (where 5 strongly disagree, 4 disagree, 3 neutral, 2 agree, and 1 strongly agree) will be
used to determine the questions given.
