Rationale: (lesson context and reasons why lesson matters)

This lesson is going to be teaching students about how they are special, which is a very important lesson for them
to learn is. Through it they will also be thinking about the future and how their lives will look because of the
decisions that they make. It will be presented at a grade one level but I think this activity is a great introduction to
the concept of growth and development in their lives.
Curriculum Connections : (which can be: big ideas / learning standards /curricular competencies/core
competencies)
https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/
One curricular connection is that this lesson will explore how stories and other texts help us understand ourselves
and make connections to others and to the world. This lesson about story building and self fits very well with this
big idea from the curriculum. Another big idea from the curriculum that matches up with this lesson is exploring
and sharing multiple perspectives that extend our thinking. This is done by looking at all the different perspectives
people have on life through the all about me books.
Learning Intentions- (learner friendly language such as: I can ..)
I can make a worksheet about myself. I can think about what I want to be when I grow up. I can think about what
makes them special. I can listen and interpret stories. I can share my thoughts in a group.
Prerequisite Concepts and Skill :( for student success)
To effectively complete this lesson students will only need a basic knowledge of their own lives and family.
Students will also need to understand about growing up and jobs but there are very little pre-requisites for this
lesson. Just a basic understanding about life. Students will have to have some understanding about what it means
to have a job and to grow up which to my understanding they do.
Materials and Resources with References/Sources:
Teacher
-All about me book
-Graphic Organizer
-Pens
-A space for learning
-alternate learning materials
-Worksheet

Students
-Colored pencils
-Pencil or pen
-imagination

Differentiated Instruction (DI): (accommodations)

The lesson will be adapted for students with learning difficulties who are unable to complete the activity in full.
They will be provided with an alternate and more simplified activity to the rest of the class. They will be given an
alternate sheet where they simply say what they wat to be when they grow up. They will also not be called on as
extensively to answer all of the questions if they are unable to understand is going on. This activity does not have
any aspects that would be unable to be completed by people with physical disabilities as it is mainly a mental
activity.

Assessment and Evaluation: (formative and summative possibilities related to curricular connections)
Assessment for the students will be done in a couple of different contexts. Firstly there will be the class
discussions where students will be asked to share their ideas through raising their hands or answering personally.
At the end of the lesson every student will also be asked to share one thing that they have learned in this lesson. In
addition to this students will present their learning through a practical activity which they will complete. Students
will make their own all about me books for the class using all that they have learned in the lesson.
Organizational/Management Strategies: (anything special to consider?)
I will be making sure that I present the materials using as many strategies as possible to ensure maximum learning
for all students. I will also be combining all of my prior knowledge on organization and management so that I am
best equipped to handle that lesson. Io will try to ensure that all the students are always engaged to the maximum
extent with the content of the story and lesson in general.

This lesson connects with the idea of family, history and story. This lesson is all about thinking about a persons
past and future as well as the idea of storytelling. The value of family which this lesson does discuss fits in closely
with the first nations values in this document. Another important connection is about recognizing the
consequences of ones actions. This is a pillar of the lesson where the students see how what they do now affects
who they are in the rest of their lives.
Lesson Activities:
Teacher Activities
Pre-Reading
The Lessons will be presented in short form to
small groups of student who will rotate
through lesson tables. Groups will consist of
5-6 students so the previous plan will be
adapted here. Students will gather around a
table to learn the lesson and complete the
assignment. Firstly I will ask a few general
questions about life and I will ask the students
to think about the questions during the story as
we will be answering them after the story is
finished. This will get students immediately
engaged in the lesson. I will then introduce
the graphic organizer which I will complete
via their ideas along the lesson. I will then talk
about the guiding questions that I previously
talked about to get the students thinking about
the subject matter before the reading begins. I
will also talk to them about how special the
book is and get them to think about why I am
showing it to them. I will then explain some
basic rules about when I am reading such as to
raise their hands with any questions and also
to stay silent when I am reading. I will then
ask if there are any final questions before we
get started.

They will then be asked a series of
introductory questions so that they
familiarize themselves with the topic.
Students will be shown the graphic organizer
and get ready to listen to the story. They will
think about questions such as, what they want
to be when they grow up, and what makes
their lives special. They will be explained
what a graphic organizer is as well as
listening and learning the instructions that
take place while the book is being read. For
this sections students are mentally preparing
for the upcoming lesson and listening to the
teacher talk. Students will be prepared for the
lesson ahead and have a warm and open
attitude towards the lesson. They will be
trying to think about what makes the lesson
special and why they are learning it before
the lesson even begins. Students will be
needed to remain in a still position and they
will be introduced to a listening strategy
where they will repeat a repetitive motion
until they are silent again.

During Reading
As reading begins I will discuss the cover of
the all about me book and what predications
can be made from this cover. Students will
raise their hands and add any thoughts they
have. My strategy for reading this book will
involve pausing after each page to ask
questions as well as breaking the book down
into three chunks. After a chunk is finished I
will give the students a moment to think about
what was read then we will work together on
the Graphic organizer so that they can share
their ideas. I will instruct the students to share
their ideas with a friend at the table as well as
in the larger group. During reading I will
restrict discussion to the times that I have
allotted to avoid confusion and loudness. After
each page is will also pause to ensure
understanding and that everyone is still
following along with the story. I will try to
present the story and discussion in a way that
everyone can add their own opinions and
everyone has a chance to speak.

Post Reading
After the reading I will ask the students if they
liked the all about me book. I will then ask
them the guiding questions. I will also ask
every student to share one special thing in
their life about them with the rest of the group.
I will ask them why I chose to read them the
story and why it was important. I will then
introduce the activity sheets and say that it is
there ticket out the door to complete them. I
will circulate the group as the activity is being
completed to ensure that everyone full
understands that topic. We will share our
activity sheets and then the lesson will be
over. After all students have rotated through
the stations the students will gather as a group
to have a general debrief? We will discuss
what worked and what didnt and the students
will share the major things that they will
remember from this lesson. When all of the
students have fully share in this time the
complete lesson will be over.

Students will be listening to me read the story 10

and reading along while comprehending what minutes
is being said. Students will try to make
personal connections to the story and at the
same time share their connections with the
rest of the group when they are called upon.
Students will be thinking after each chunk
about what took place and how they connect
tot that chunk. Students will share their
thoughts with the rest of the group and
collaborate together to strengthen overall
learning. They will follow along with the
text and pay attention so that they are ready
whenever the teacher calls on them. Students
will help the teacher complete the graphic
organizer to show proof of their
attentiveness. They will answer both
categories of the graph and then share their
ideas whether those come in the form of
words or images. In sharing this ideas
students will be adding to their own personal
understanding of the subject matter as well as
preparing for the guiding questions that will
come after the story is finished.

When the story is over students will discuss

the story and answer the guiding questions as
a group. We will also discuss why I chose
this book for the class and what made it so
important. Next the students will expand on
one of the guiding questions and one of the
core concepts of the story. This was what are
you going to be when you grow up. We will
discuss this topic then students will be given
an activity sheet for them to complete
surrounding this topic which has been
covered previously in Mrs. Marshalls Class.
The students will be given an activity sheet
where they write add their name and what
they want to be when they grow up. They
will also illustrate this in a space provided.
After this they will hand this activity sheet
into me and discuss it with the rest of the
group. From there the lesson is finished.
After all the students have completed the
students will all gather together and discuss
all of the lessons as a whole.
