Lesson: Double Digit Addition

Lesson Aim:

Have students understand adding two double digit numbers.

Student Learning Objective (SOL):

2.8 The student will create and solve one- and two-step addition and subtraction
problems, using data from simple tables, picture graphs, and bar graphs.

Introduction (5 minutes):
Will inform students that today they will learning about double digit
addition, again.
Explain that they will do a worksheet with columns to help add the correct
numbers.
Ask students
Ask if they know what a double digit number is?
Ask if they can set up double digit addition problems?
Ask if they know what numbers they add first?

Lesson Content:

Students to understand how to set up a two digit addition problem and solve it.

Teach the Lesson:

Teacher Modeling (5 minutes):
First I will teach the students that the numbers are stacked. The ones
place on top of the ones place. The tens place on top of the tens place. I will
show them where the addition sign goes and where the line goes under the
numbers.
I will start with an example problem first that has no carrying.
After I show them how to do this problem I will give them a problem with
carrying to try after I help them set it up.

Guided Practice/Interactive Modeling (10 minutes)

After we work through the first examples I will ask the students to turn to
the blank side of their worksheets and create problems properly then work
through them together. This is to make sure they understand how to set up these
addition problems properly. Last week when we worked on these, the students

easily forgot to add the far right column first, so we will continually review this
until they understand.

Differentiation
I will read the worksheets out loud and provide many examples as
needed. I will also work with the students if they need extra support.

Activities/Independent Working Time (15 minutes)

I will then give the students the Star Worksheet worksheet to do on their
own. I will read the directions and help students as needed, but will make this as
independent work. I will review and point out that this worksheet sets up the
columns for them and to always add the far right column first.

Materials:
Star Worksheet worksheet

Check for Understanding/Assessment (5 minutes):

Give a couple examples on the whiteboard at the end of the lesson to
check for understanding. Have each student set up a double digit addition
problem and solve it as an exit slip from the group.

Closure (5 minutes):
Ask students again:
Ask if they know what a double digit number is?
Ask if they can set up double digit addition problems?
Ask if they know what number they will add first?
