The String Instrument Family

Violin and Viola

The viola came into existence
around or before 1530 while the
Violin became a standard in Italy
around 1550. One of the main
differences between these two
instruments is that the viola is
slightly larger and the music is
written on the alto clef! Both the
violin and viola have underwent
modifications in the neck,
fingerboard, bridge, bass bar etc.
to reach acoustical perfection.

Cello
The history of the cello begins
with the bass violin! One factor
that effect the size of the bass
violin was the wire wound string
(allowing the instrument to be
smaller). The cello was at first
placed on the floor to play, then
people ended up using their legs
to hold it off the floor! Eventually,
they advanced to using end pins
to hold the instrument up!

Double Bass
The Double Bass is the largest
instrument of these four! It actually
used to take 2 people to be able
to play. Eventually, they made it
small enough for one person to
be able to play. The Double Bass
