ARE there flying saucers? ... have people

. . Commonsense says no, but there are
always tantalising doubts. At least an
author who sent us this manuscript says
he has found strange evidence. What do

RECENT reports of spacecraft over the River Plate area of

from the first century A.D.
The maps caused considerable controversy among
scientists. Opinion raged
until, in 1952, they were
sent to Arlington H. Mailery, a well-known expert in
cartography.
After exhaustive examination of the documents he
noticed that everything in
the Mediterranean had been
set down, but not in their
proper order. Did the people

This explanation did not
satisfy Mallery.

TWO South Australians leave. Sydney this morning with a 1 machine built -to specificatidhs supplied in a radio message
from a Venusian flying saucer.
The.machine is design&d to locate Maces

punched in it by
nuclear explosions.
Wherever these places
are found, the molecular
strength of everything in
(or over) them is weakenedso that buildings fall
down and planes disintet. grate in mid-air.
These "gravity holes"
are only about.- a quarter
of a mile in diameter-----but
nothing outside them is
I safe because they roam
about cross-country.
Before I go any further
I'd, better explain that the
engineers don't really knOw
if their machine will work
they're just testing it.
Nor are they sure that
the design originated
aboard a Venusian flying
saucerthey've just been
told that it did.

Orange
flash
mystery
CANBERRA,
Thursday. -- Aviation and weather
officials are unable
to
explain
the
cause of a bright
orange flash seen
by hundreds of
people in the sky
over Canberra last
night.
The flash was reported
at about 6.15 pm in the
north-east.
Many believed it was
a reflection of the
American high altitude
nuclear test over Johnston Islandbut the teat
was due to start at 6.45
pm EST and in fact
there Was no atom blast.
The flash, also seen
by air traffic control
officers at Canberra Airport, lasted for about six
seconds.
The assistant director
of Mt. Stromlo Observatory, Dr. A. R. Hogg,
I said as the flash was
not reported elsewhere,
it could have been of
local origin -- perhaps
caused
by
someone
sending up flares or
rockets near Canberra.

Support for the

Mr. Dennis Crowe told the Press
about the green, glowing object he
saw take off from Vaucluse beach,
then sat back to await the penalty of
being frank about flying saucers.

But instead of public

ridicule ("seeing things" is
no light burden to bear) he
got letters of congratulation.
From all parts of the
State came words of praise
for -his .actions: not only
did he admit seeing a
green, glowing object, but
he drew it, and the Daily.
Telegraph published what
he drew.
The letter writers said
they had seen objects like
the one Mr. Crowe drew,
but had not been brave
enough, to admit it.
Here are extracts from
some of the letters,

They have also received written evidence

from several Sydney
people who claimed to
have seen white objects
in the sky during the
past fortnight.
This is the first time
the RAAF has ordered a
full-scale report on unidentified flying objects.
On July 15 air traffic
control officers of the
Department of Civil
Aviation saw a white
object in the sky from
Canberra airport's control tower.
Several Canberra
residents later reported
seeing a light in the sky
for about four seconds.
One of the witnesses
said later: "The light
moved at a fantastic
speed just overhead and
then disappeared."

CANBERRA, Fri. The RAAF could not positively

identify a flying object seen from Canberra several weeks
ago, the Minister for Air (Mr. Howson) said today.
R. HOWSON said the
sighting, on July 15,
was made by a number of
people including Department of Civil Aviation
officials on duty at Canberra Airport.
The sighting could not
be positively identified but

investigators believed there

were three possible explanations.
These were:
A broken condensation
trail of a high flying jet
aircraft.
The planet Venus.

Mr. Howson said the
planet Venus was clearly
visible during the day
under some conditions.
Its position at the time
was about the same as the
direction of the sighting
of the object.
Meteorological balloons,
filled with hydrogen and
sent to high altitudes for
wind forecasting, were
visible from long distances

This effect could also

Mr. Howson said apparently the object disappeared suddenly.
This could be explained
by the fact that meteorological balloons normally
burst at varying altitudes.
The RAAF had previously investigated sight, ings which turned out to
