THE PROBLEM

Introduction
St. Paul University Iloilo (SPUI) is a Christ-centered university that is
basically guided upon the teachings of St. Paul the apostle. They provide quality
education for competitive students that will help them grow accordingly to
success as impelled by the love of Christ.
Based on SPUIs institutional goals, they aim to: (1) Instill in the young
men and women who come to the university, the Catholic faith and Christian
values necessary in the formation of a servant-leader spirituality; (2) Develop
academically competent professionals who will serve as responsible leaders and
intelligent followers in the building of a Christian community; (3) Equip students
with lifelong learning skills in a conducive environment that integrates technology
in a learner-centered classroom; (4) Conduct and publish quality researches of
local, national, and global significance with adherence to the standard code of
ethics and to foster external research partnerships; (5) Respond to the needs of
the less privileged in the community and empower its people towards
sustainability and attainment of quality of life; (6) Inculcate a strong spirit of
nationalism characterized by deep appreciation of Filipino socio-cultural heritage
and a dynamic commitment to the growth and development of a nation.
According to St. Paul University Iloilos online page, Common Freshmen
Program, a program designed in the year 2005, is intently for first-year students

admitted to a 4-year/5-year course at St. Paul University Iloilo. It aims to: (1)
Provide a common orientation to the Paulinian University culture; (2) Unify the
academic foundation for all the programs offered at the university; (3) Form
closer ties among Paulinians across the different colleges on campus; (4) Offer
guidance towards an enlightened career path as future Paulinian professionals
for God and country.
The needs of our students are central to our shaping of the University and
our choice of directions. We aim to offer a sense of community to address each
student as an individual, to create a stimulating and encouraging environment for
discovery, learning and personal development. Career change and lifelong
education are becoming normal, and we are accommodating growing numbers of
minority, mature, part-time, non-credit and other new categories of students.
This research intended for the Common First-year Paulinians (CFP) of St.
Paul University Iloilo is necessary in order to know how well the students know
about the school they chose to impart their talents or to plant their innate seed of
intelligence that will grow into a tree of wisdom. Also, through this study, the
CFPs will feel more at ease to the new environment that surrounds them. Lastly,
they will have a sense of awareness to the course they will later on decide to
take.

On Common Freshmen Paulinians
Common

Freshmen

Paulinians

play

vital

role

in

being

Paulinian.According to the St. Pauls student handbook (2013 edition), the

Common First-year Paulinians was established in Academic Year 2005-2006 as
Common Freshmen Program. This program put all the First year students for the
different degree programs in one category: Paulinian Freshmen. This is designed
for first year students admitted to a 4-year/5-year course at St. Paul University
Iloilo to give them time to reflect on their career pathway.
On St. Paul University Iloilo
As an overview of what the university has to offer, it is important for every
Paulinians or Paulinian-to-be, to have knowledge of their roots. It is a way of
looking back to the universitys humble beginnings.
The Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres began their apostolic activities in Iloilo
by establishing St. Pauls Hospital in 1911 through the invitation and support of
His Eminence Denis Cardinal Dougherty, Bishop of Jaro. Their primary aim was
the care for the poor and sick. However, the care of the poor and the sick was not
only the apostolic mission of the Sisters of St. Paul; they have also been founded
for the purpose of training and educating the young. So it was, with the great
desire emboldened by the formative component of their mission, coupled with the
pressing need of the hospital for trained and competent Catholic nurses, the
Sisters under the leadership of Mother Josephine de Jesus opened the School of
Nursing in June, 1946. Seventy students were admitted into the first Graduate
Nurse Training Program, 68 females and 2 males, an early sign of the openness

11
and the universality which is a mark of St. Paul. Sr. Marie Louise Limbaga, SPC,
became the Dean from 1946-1947.
Sr. Marie Madeleine, SPC soon took leadership of the School of Nursing.
As stated in the St. Paul University Iloilos student handbook (2013
edition), entitled, The Birth of St. Paul College of Iloilo in 1975, under the
leadership of Sr. Carolina Agravante, SPC, the school was upgraded into a
college with the opening of the Arts and Sciences programs, namely Bachelor of
Arts in Mass Communication, Bachelor of Science in Biology, Bachelor of
Science n Nutrition, Bachelor of Science in Psychology and the 2-year Certificate
Diploma in Dietetic Technician, and Junior Secretarial. Nursing was offered as a
5-year academic program. This period also saw the opening of the Social
Laboratory Extension Program (SLEP), which served as the avenue for students
Community Development Outreach Program.
Relationship of Common First-Year Paulinian to St. Paul University Iloilo
As the Common Freshmen Program is entitled for the First year students
of St. Paul University Iloilo, it is their requirement to know more about the
university and the values of being a Paulinian. This is in order to embrace the
teachings of being a Christian, thus, the significance of knowing the connection
of the knowledge of Common First-year Paulinian to the university itself. Starting
with the details that are needed to know by the freshmen:

14

St.Paul
St. Paul is said to have the greatest influence on Christianity. In fact, both Jesus
and Paul seem to have equally contributed to Christianity. A significant author of
the New Testament, Paul elevated the status of Christian church as the body of
Christ and the world outside as under His judgment.

Instead of describing Christ, Paul's work concentrated on the nature of

Christians' relationship with Christ and, in particular, on Christ's saving work (to

15
give up His own life to safeguard others' life). Some of the life incidents of Jesus
Christ, mentioned by Paul, are the Last Supper, His death by crucifixion and His
resurrection. St Paul had written three doctrines - Justification, Redemption and
Reconciliation. Paul said that Christ took the punishment on behalf of sinners, so
that they are relieved off their divine retribution. In the doctrine of 'Justification',
faith is regarded as the most vital constituent.

Paul argued that holding on Christ, at the time of His death and resurrection, a
person would become one with the Lord. However, in terms of the release of
soul, a person will achieve that on the grounds of His sacrifice. 'Redemption' is
themed on freeing of slaves. Just as a specific price was paid to relieve a slave
from the ownership of another, in the same way, Christ paid the price of His
death, as a ransom, to relieve the common man from his sins. 'Reconciliation'
deals with the fact that Christ brought down the dividingwall between Jews and
Gentiles, created by law. The doctrine basically deals with the making of peace.

While current graduation rates at the best universities approach 90%, only onethird of entering college students can expect to graduate within four years.
Conley states that there are two main factors responsible for the gap between
college readiness and college expectations: the ability to succeed in the
classroom and other, more general behaviorsin other words, lack of
intellectual maturity and lack of understanding of the purpose and opportunities
of college. Most high school students view college as some sort of extension of

16
high school. He cites some data from NSSE (the National Survey of Student
Engagement), comparing some of those results to similar data on high school
seniorsa comparison strongly suggesting, once again, that high school
graduates are not ready for college. Conley then moves to a review of college
curricula, beginning with general education. He cites the prevalence of general
education reform, and outlines what he sees as characteristics of effective and
innovative general education curricula: integration of skills, appreciation of
diversity, standards and assessments, small learning communities, and first-year
interest groups. He then describes some examples of strong and effective
general education curricula. Conley (2005)

"College knowledge," or knowing how to access college and navigate the higher
education experience, is as important a part of college readiness as having good
grades and high scores on an admissions test. But many first-generation college
students arrive on campus without the supportinformational, emotional, and
financialthat students with college-educated parents often receive. Skills such
as how to participate in class, take notes, or talk to professors, which students
from college-educated families may take for granted, are new to many first
generation students.
Because of this college knowledge gap, many first generation students become
overwhelmed with anxiety, raising the likelihood of dropping out. Time magazine
reported that a quarter of low-income, first-generation college students leave
school after the first year.

17
A growing number of colleges are working to bridge this college knowledge gap,
developing programs to provide needed supports for first-generation students,
and they are turning to higher education funders for support. L.S. Hall (n.d)

METHODOLOGY

18
The Research Design
The study will use the Descriptive Research Design because it is the most
appropriate design for this type of research. A descriptive study, because it is the
type of research that does not alter or intervene in the environment, they are
often referred to as correlational or observational studies. Descriptive studies
are also conducted to demonstrate associations or relationships between things
around you. Descriptive studies are usually the best methods for collecting
information that will demonstrate relationships and describe it. These types of
studies are often done before the experiment to know what specific things to do
and include in experiment.
The researcher also used one research techniques to help him in
answering his research questions. The research techniques use is survey. These
are the variables that were investigated.

Setting of the Study

This study was conducted at St.Paul University Iloilo. The respondents of
the study were the CFP students of St.Paul University Iloilo.

Sample and Sampling Scheme

19
The researcher will randomly select 280 students to be the respondents
who would answer his self-made questionnaire. All respondents will be CFP
students from St. Paul University Iloilo.
The researcher considered other personal information about the
respondents as to provide a deeper analysis of this research study. The
information considered includes: (1) name; (2) gender

Research Instrumentation
To gather quantitative data, the study will use a structured questionnaire to
support for reliability. This survey questionnaire is composed of questions that
aimed to answer the researcher research problem.
The Survey has one part (1) the Personal Data Identification and (2) the
Question Proper. The first part is to fill in their personal data such as the
respondents name, year level & gender. The second part which is the Question
Proper requires students to check the number of their respective answers among
the two available options given namely: (1) True; (2) False. Furthermore, this part
is composed of questions that tackle the knowledge of CFP students about
St.Paul University Iloilo.

Data Gathering Procedures

After the researchers questionnaire was approved, he then will give out
the questionnaires to 280 Common Freshmen Paulinian students of the

20
university. The researcher will first explain to the respondents the purpose of the
survey for them to understand better why the researcher needed their answers.
In classifying the respondents in terms of their overall level of knowledge,
the following scale was used:
