Acknowledgement

I wish my sincere gratitude to Ms. Rakhi Wahee Pratap for giving me an

opportunity of doing project on Elements and Principles Of Design. The
completion of this project could not have been possible without her
assistance. I greatly appreciate and acknowledge her guidance and
support.
I am sincerely thankful to her for making me learn the various Elements
and Principles of Design. I would like to express deep appreciation and
indebtedness to them who helped me during the completion of this
Project.

Elements of fashion
The elements and principles of design are the building blocks used to create a
work of art. The elements of design can be thought of as the things that make
up a painting, drawing, design etc.
POINT
The point is the first and simplest element of visual design. It has a starting but
no extension.
LINE
Line can be considered in two ways. The linear marks made with a pen or
brush or the edge created when two shapes meet.
SHAPE
A shape is a self contained defined area of geometric or organic form. A
positive shape in a painting automatically creates a negative shape.
TEXTURE
Texture is the surface quality of a shape - rough, smooth, soft hard glossy etc.
Texture can be physical (tactile) or visual.
COLOUR
Colors play a large role in the elements of design with the color wheel being
used as a tool, and color theory providing a body of practical guidance to color
mixing and the visual impacts of specific color combination.

Point

Line
Characteristics of Line
Width thick, thin, tapering, uneven
Length long, short, continuous, broken
Direction horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curving, perpendicular,
oblique, parallel, radial, zigzag
Focus- Sharp, blurry, fuzzy, choppy
Feeling sharp, jagged, graceful, smooth

Vertical stripes create long lines, thus making you look, well, longer.

Geometric Pattern in Fashion.

Change direction abruptly with sharp

points. For fun not serious events. Can
create a jumpy confused feeling if over
used.

Shape
The overall shape of a garment is its form or silhouette, its overall outline.
The shape is created by the cut and construction of a garment. Clothes
can reveal or disguise the natural body contour. Clothing shapes that are
most flattering to a person emphasize his or her good features and hide
the less attractive ones.

The shoulders give her edgy look.

Form fitting clothes reveal any

unattractive contours a body
might have.

Straight tabular shapes make one

look taller.

Different shapes give different look

Color
The color wheel is a tool used to organize color. It is made up of:
Primary colors Red, Yellow and Blue

Secondary colors- Orange, Voilet and Green.

Tertiary colors

Analogous Colors

Analogous colors are colors that are next to each other on the color wheel

Pastel colors.

Tops and bottoms of the same color create an uninterrupted vertical line,
making you look thinner and taller

Texture
Texture gives tactility and depth to otherwise flat designs.

Rough texture

Bulky materials sparingly, such as wide-wale corduroy, crushed velvet,

metallic, leather, suede, mohair, angora, brocade, taffeta, boucle, satin,
fringe and flannel.
"Flat" materials don't add volume. Pick cotton, denim, silk, or wool gabardine.
Some fabrics actually help slim and shape. Try jersey, cashmere, fine cotton,
and anything with a touch of spandex.

Silky texture

Principles of Design
The Principles are concepts used to organize or arrange the structural
elements of design. Again, the way in which these principles are applied
affects the expressive content, or the message of the work.
The principles are:

Balance is the concept of visual equilibrium, and relates to our physical

sense of balance. It is a reconciliation of opposing forces in a composition
that results in visual stability. Most successful compositions achieve
balance in one of two ways: symmetrically or asymmetrically.

Proportion refers to the relative size and scale of the various elements in a
design. The issue is the relationship between objects, or parts, of a whole.
This means that it is necessary to discuss proportion in terms of the
context or standard used to determine proportions.

movement.
