Science Movement Lesson Plan (by Meredith Lane)

Activity: Hustle to Where I Live

Resource: PE Central

Time Required:
20 mins

Grade: K-3

Objectives for this Lesson:

Psychomotor: The student will be able to perform various types of
locomotor movements (i.e. galloping, skipping, jumping, hopping)
in proper form while participating in activities presented by the
teacher.
Cognitive: The student will be able to distinguish between habitats
of various animals by moving to different stations when requested
by the teacher.
Prerequisite Skills or Knowledge Needed:
Running
Jumping
Skipping
Hopping
Galloping
Knowledge about various habitats
Habitats:
Desert
Rainforest
Ocean
Grassland
Forest
Polar
Examples of animals from each habitat:
Polar bear (polar)

Snake (forest, grassland, rainforest, desert)

Penguin (polar, ocean)
Wolf (forest, polar)
Bear (forest)
Elephant (grassland, rainforest)
Monkey (rainforest)
Parrot (rainforest)
Scorpion (desert)
Sea turtle (ocean)
Dolphin (ocean)
Camel (desert)
Antelope (grassland)
Tiger (grassland, rainforest)
Bobcat (forest)
Shark (ocean)
Deer (forest)
Owl (forest)
Sloth (rainforest)
Zebra (grassland)

Management Issues for this Lesson:

Equipment will be set up prior to the activity and students should
leave the equipment where it is. No teams are needed; students will
participate individually.
Management issues could be having students stay focused between
animals being called and not getting out of control while moving.
These issues will be solved using verbal cues.
Safety Issues for this Lesson:
Make sure youre wearing running shoes and that they are tied. No
gum in your mouth. Remember personal space versus general
space and how to move within these.

Equipment and/or Supplies Needed for this Lesson:

Six different colored poly-spots, hula hoops, or cones to represent
each habitat (blue for ocean, red for rainforest, purple for polar,
yellow for desert, green for forest, and orange for grassland).
Optional: six signs that specify each habitat (i.e. ocean sign next to
the blue cone), and music to signify when the students should be
moving and discussing.
Facility set-up Needed for this Lesson:
One colored cone in each section along the perimeter of the gym
one in each corner, and two in between.

Welcome, Overview:
Hello class! Do you remember when
we talked about habitats? Who can
tell me what a habitat is? What is an
example of a habitat? Today we are
going to play a game to help us
remember habitats and the types of
animals that live inside them! Its
called Hustle to Where I Live. Can
anyone tell me what the word
hustle means?
Activity:
Im going to break you all up into
four groups; we are going to count off
by fours. When I say habitats, you
will stand up and go to the middle of
the gym. Each group is going to be
assigned an animal, so you have to
remember which animal you are!

Management:
Use a clapping
signal/pattern
to get the
students
attention
CFU: (just
discussion)
ask if they
have questions
CFU: How are
you moving?
CFU: Where
are you
moving?

the rules

Each round we will be moving a

different way, so when you hear me
say hustle, you will move like that
through general space to the habitat
where that animal lives. We have 6
habitats set up in the gym: desert,
rainforest, ocean, grassland, forest,
and polar. Each one has its own
color (walk to each habitat and say
its name and have students repeat
the name back to you). There are
some animals that could live in more
than one habitat, so if one of your
group members goes to a different
habitat than you, thats okay!
If you have any questions about the
habitats during the game, raise your
hand and you may come to me and
ask.
While in the habitats, you should be
talking to your friends and
discussing why you chose to go
there. I may call on you randomly to
tell me another animal that lives in
that same habitat.

CFU: What will

I say for you to
move?
CFU: How
many habitats
in the gym?

CFU: What do
you do if you
have a
question?
CFU: What will
I ask you to tell
me?
