Translation

Moreover, today the development of technology and globalization need to understand any
languages besides their mother tongue cannot be avoided. This happens because each individual should
be able to develop their competency and ability to understand a second language as the certain demand
and reason, especially for in educational field. In understanding a second language, in this case English,
then there will never be separated from the activity of translation.
Surely this cannot be parted from the process of translating the meaning of the text of the source text
(ST). So that could mean every activity of the translation is the process of expanding to understand the
source text into target text understood. Translation is not only be defined as interpreting one language to
another, but it also requires the standard equivalence of the source language towards the target language.
In line with that Nida and Taber (1982, p. 12) state that translating consists in reproducing in the
receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source language message
Moreover, translating a text from the source text (ST) must consider the closest natural equivalent
meaning. It implies that the meaning of the target text must be equivalent with that of the source. It has
been acclaimed and proven that reading and understanding the contents of the reading is a kind of activity
deciphers and solves the contents of a meaning as an important part in translating a text.
In school, English as the foreign language and compulsory subject has involved translation
activity implicitly and explicitly in order to get the meaning of English into first language (Indonesian
Language). Since obtaining the translations meaning holds the essential roles for comprehending English
in learning process, thats why the translation always takes an important place in understanding it.
Theoretical Framework
In class, the students are familiar in translating words, sentences, and texts in order to get the
meaning and understand purposive objectives contextually. Many students even just translate directly and
ignore the equivalence factors. Related to the meaning, it is classified into two kinds, referential meaning
and connotative meaning.
Methodology
This study used the documentation as data collection i.e. the students written text which were saved
such as narrative text, recount text, descriptive text, and report text. It is Al-Ittifaqiyah Islamic Boarding
School students that provide the present study with the data needed. It consists of data from students in
level Junior (MTS) and Senior High school (SMA) of English subject class, Al-Ittifaqiyah English Course
(AEC), and TOEFL Class Program. The data collected are identified in order to find the syntactic features
related to translation theory in terms of translating English as the source language into Indonesian
language as the target language, and vice versa.
