1. Howdidyouspendyourtimethisweek?Whatresponsibilitiesdidyouhave?
ThisweekIcontinuedfulltimeteachinginEnglishIandEnglishII.IntheEnglishI
classes,wereadourlastcoupleofshortstories,andwedidafunlessononvoice.Atthe
endoftheweek,studentstookaquizoverliteraryterms,andthentheybeganprewriting
fortheirpersonalnarratives.InEnglishII,wecontinuedworkingonthestudents
argumentativeresearchpapers.Studentshadtimetoreadandannotatetheirarticles,and
thenwedidpracticewithwritingclaimsandreasonsandsupportingthosereasonswith
evidencebydoingtopictalks.Toendtheweek,wereviewedeffectiveleadins,and
studentshadtocompleteagraphicorganizerinwhichtheyidentifiedtheirclaims,
reasons,andtwopiecesofevidenceforeachreason.Thishelpedthemorganizetheir
thoughtsandtheirargument.
2. Whatwereyourmostsatisfyingexperiences?Whatwereyourmostchallenging
experiences?
Mymostsatisfyingexperienceswereseeingmyvoicelessondowellandhelpingoneof
mystudentsoneonone.IdidalessononVoiceinwhichstudentsreadshortexcerpts
fromtwodifferentcharacters(labeledcharacter1andcharacter2).Theythenhadtouse
thoseexcerptstodeterminecharacteristicsofthecharacter(age,personality,etc.).Once
wehaddiscussedhowvoicecouldrevealcharactertraits,theclasswassplitinhalf,and
onesideoftheroomhadtowriteastoryactingascharacter1andtheotherhalfofthe
classhadtowriteastoryactingascharacter2.Thenweshared,andthestudentsdid
reallywellwithit.Ihavealsobeenworkingcloselywithoneofmystudentswhenhe
comesintoEnglishtutoreveryotherday.Hehasbeencompletingmissingassignments,
andIhelpedhimstudyforaquizwetookonThursday.Iglancedoverhisquiz,andit
lookslikehedidwellwhichisagreatfeeling.
Mymostchallengingexperiencesweretryingtoavoidbeingfrustratedandmaintaining
confidence.Ihavebeengettingveryfrustratedlatelywithmystudentsactinglikethey
havenoideawhattheyresupposedtobedoingafterIhaveexplaineditseveraltimes.
Itstheconstantbattleoftryingtogetthemtopayattention.Iamalsostrugglingabit
rightnowwithconfidencebecauseweareinthewritingprocess,andIhavelesscontrol
now.IhavetalkedwithEmilyaboutthis,andshesayssheoftenfeelsthiswaytoo.Iam
goingtoincorporateminilessonsatthebeginningofclasstogivethemsomeguidance,
butoncetheybeginwriting,IcannolongerbeincontrolIhavetoletthemspreadtheir
wingsandfly.
3. Whataretheplansfortheupcomingweek?
NextweekinEnglishI,studentswillcontinueworkingontheirpersonalnarratives.We
willbeworkshoppingtheirdrafts,workingtoimproveontheirbeginnings,middles,and
ends,aswellasimprovingtheirvoiceandgrammaticalaspects.Iamhopingto

incorporateanewpeerrevisionstrategy.TheywillsubmitthesepapersonFriday.In
EnglishII,studentswillcontinueworkingtoleadinandanalyzetheir6quotes.When
theyhavefinishedtheseaspects,theywillbeginputtingtheinformationintoparagraphs
tostartformingtheirpaper.Alongtheway,wewillreviewgoodexamplesofanalysis,
transitions,introductions,conclusions,andcounterclaims/rebuttals.Theywillsubmit
theirpaperstheWednesdaybeforeThanksgiving.
