Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Performance Task: Participating in an Imaginary Presidential Election

Suggested Grade: 3

After answering some questions about our current presidential election, you are going to read a somewhat different approach to a presidential election. This
approach is different because in our story today, a duck wants to run for president. The book is called Duck for President and it is written by Doreen Cronin.
As I read, you should listen for the many steps that the animals and people go through to participate in the elections in our story. After the story, you are
going to get to log-on to your Chromebook at your seat. I have already placed your Chromebook at your assigned seats and so, you do not need to worry
about locating your technology today. Your first job is to access Google Classroom while we talk about some good and not-so-good qualities that a president
could or should have. Once you are logged on and connected to our Google Classroom, we will go through the steps of participating in an election together
on the Google Form that can be located on the Google Classroom that you have just accessed. First, you will complete your Voters Registration Form. Our
form has two requirements to be allowed to vote. In order to vote, you must be a third grade student at your school and have read Duck for President by
Doreen Cronin in your school. If you do not meet one or either of the requirements, you will not be allowed to vote in todays election. After you have
completed your Voters Registration Form successfully, you will be given the chance to vote. The last page you will have to complete is your Exit Ticket. The
Exit Ticket asks you two questions about the real election in the United States of America. Answer these two questions by yourself and submit your form.
When you are done, you may log-off while the teachers recount the votes (just like what happens in a real election!). Once everyone is logged off, the winner
of the election will be revealed. Finally, you will get to do your book selection for this week. We will end class with a quick review of the answers to the Exit
Ticket while you stand in line and wait to leave the library.
This lesson is important to you because this is very likely the first presidential election that you will remember and it is very important for you to be informed
of how the election process works in the United States of America.
