Final Project: Develop a Professional Development Activity

November 30, 2016
1. Topic: Integrating games into the classroom
2. Target audience: 4th Grade Math Teachers
3. Context: This professional development session on integrating
games into the classroom will take place at the elementary school
building. This professional development session will be provided to
the 4th grade teachers during their pre-planning days in August before
the first day of school. If the teachers receive the training before the
beginning of the school year, they will be able to implement the math
games within their lesson plans and develop a routine during their
centers. Also, this will allow for teachers to discuss and collaborate
throughout the year on what is working in their classroom and what is
not working in regards to integrating games within their classroom.
4. Learning Objectives:
Math Standard
MGSE4.OA.1 Understand that a multiplicative comparison is a
situation in which one quantity is multiplied by a specified number to
get another quantity.
a. Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison e.g., interpret
35 = 5 7 as a
statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5.
b. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as
multiplication equations.
MGSE4.OA.2 Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving
multiplicative
comparison. Use drawings and equations with a symbol or letter for
the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing
multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.
ISTE Standards: Creative Communicator
Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for
a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and
digital media appropriate to their goals.
5. Detailed Description of the PD Activity: Integrating games in the
classroom professional development session will be day of preplanning (4 hours). Teachers will need to bring their laptops, paper,
and a writing utensil. The professional development sessions itinerary
is as follows:
Introduction (30 minutes): Teachers will be shown an infographic
on integrating games within in the classroom and review a short

video. The teachers will also answer 3 written questions relating to

how comfortable they are using technology in the classroom.
Review Math Websites (40 minutes): The focus will be on
multiplication and division facts and word problems relating to
multiplication and division. Teachers will be given a list of websites
that pertain to multiplication and division. They will work in pairs and
navigate through some of the websites. The goal is for the teachers
to be able to play some of the games. At this time, teachers will be
able to create their own accounts so they will be able to use these
websites in their classroom. Teachers will be able to share out what
websites they liked and the websites that they did not like. They will
also discuss the reasons why they did or did not like them. Teachers
will collaborate to finds ways that they can monitor the students
progress on the standards that are the focus which are multiplication
and division.
How to integrate games in lesson planning (40 minutes):
Teachers will be given ideas on how to integrate games within their
lesson plans. This school uses Guided Math, even though every
classroom may look a little different, all teachers have math centers.
At least one center is always a technology center. Teachers will be
given multiple timelines that may work in their classroom for center
rotation.
Break (20 minutes)
Creating Lesson Plans for Math (90 minutes): Teachers will be
given the remainder of the time to create lessons for the first 4 weeks
of school. They will have to implement the use of math games with
their lesson plans daily. The teachers will have to choose the websites
that they will use and how they are going to monitor the students
progress.
Closing (20 minutes): Teachers will be given the same 3 questions
from the beginning of the professional development session to assess
how comfortable they are with using technology in the classroom.
Further Discussions: Once a month during collaborative planning,
teachers will discuss what is working and not working in regards to
game integration within the classroom. They will share ideas on how
they are integrating games in their classroom.

7. Implementation Plan: This professional development session on
integrating games into the classroom will be provided to teachers
during pre-planning. This will allow for teachers to implement the
games starting the beginning of the school year. Teachers will be
required to use the games selected daily in their math centers.

Teachers will then collaborate with one another on how it is working

and share ideas.
