Snakes are being spotted a fair bit in Moorabool at the
moment and while they are not the responsibility of
Moorabool Shire Council, theres a little bit of a twist to that
line.
If you do spot a snake on your property, and are concerned
about it, then its time to call a snake catcher not council.
If you encounter a snake, dont try to catch or kill it.
Snakes will move along if left alone, explained Mayor Dave
Edwards.
If a snake on your property is causing concern, please do
not phone Council you need to contact a qualified snake
catcher who can remove the snake safely.
While many residents have been concerned that long grass,
grown from all the recent rain, will attract snakes, slashing
is now being undertaken according to a fire risk priority list.
In relation to long grass and fire hazards Council is
continuing its inspections of high risk fire areas to ensure
property owners have properly cleared land.
And for the expert opinion on what is happening with snakes
locally, the Moorabool News consulted newly appointed East
Ward Councillor Jarrod Bingham who is a qualified snake
catcher.
Cr Bingham explained that there isnt actually an increase in
the number of snakes, pointing out that snake numbers have
remained steady for many years.
Its just that people are more vigilant now, and people are
more aware so they think its an increase in numbers, Cr
Bingham explained.
He added that the shires snake population is more visible
at the moment as the abundance of food is drawing them out
and about.
The recent rain has had a major impact on snake numbers,
because it has allowed the vegetation to grow which in turn
sees an influx of lizards and rodents and birds, which in turn
brings out the snakes because they feed on them.
Cr Bingham explained that preventative measures are the
best option.
Which includes making sure your property is not appealing
to snakes they are looking for food and water, and if you
dont have any food sources on your property like rodents,
lizards, and chickens attract rodents which attract snakes
and theyre looking for water, so its a good idea not to leave
any pet water bowls outside if you can, its a good idea to
drain any ponds or bird baths if you can, and fix any leaking
taps that may cause puddles on the ground.
If you can fix those two things, not have any food or water
sources on your property, then you will never ever have a
snake live on your property. But you may see a snake moving
from point A to point B, which happens to go through your
property.
But most snakes will just venture off on their own if left
alone, according to Cr Bingham.
Snakes are shy and timid animals, and they dont want to
use their precious venom biting us. It takes them a week to
regenerate the venom, and in that time, they have no defence
against actual predators and no venom to kill their prey.
Snakes will really only bite if you try to catch and kill them,
or if you accidentally surprise them even then, its usually a
dry bite. They can choose not to invenomate us, and its their
last resort.
Which makes snakes not as deadly as portrayed in the
media.
quite a lot of people die from heart attacks after theyve
been bitten because people are led to believe that if you get
bitten by a snake, thats it.
But any risk can be absolutely minimised by applying
proper first aid.

Road death adds to toll

By Jessica Howard
A man has died after his vehicle collided with a truck on
Ballan-Daylesford Road.
It is believed the vehicle,
travelling north-bound, collided with the south-bound
truck shortly before 3pm on
Tuesday (November 22).
The section of road located
between Flacks Lane and
Dehnerts Road was blocked
off in both directions after
the truck jack-knifed, careering into a tree, and the vehicle spiralled onto the roadside grass opposite, littering
debris across the road.
The male truck driver was
taken to hospital in an ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
The male driver of the car,
who was the sole occupant,
died at the scene.
Ballan and Gordon Fire
Brigades attended the scene
alongside Ballan and Bacchus Marsh Police.
The death has brought the
road toll for 2016 to 263 compared to 230 this time last
year.
Police are still determining
the cause of the accident.
Anyone who witnessed the
crash is urged to contact
Crime Stoppers on 1800 333
000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

In the unfortunate event you do get bitten by a snake,

there are a few must-dos and misnomers, according to
Cr Bingham.
* Apply a compression bandage around the bite area,
and wrap it first down to the extremities then back to the
body. For example, a wrist bite should be wrapped down
to the fingertips and then back up to the armpit.
* Ensure the bandage does not cover the bite area; the
bite itself can be tested to find what snake caused the
bite, and therefore what anti-venin should be used.
There is a general anti-venin for all bites, but its not as
effective as each specific one. If the bite is covered with
the bandage, then it cant be tested.
*
Immobilise the victim venom travels through the
lymphatic system, and not through the blood supply. The
lymphatic system is stimulated by muscle movement, so
keeping still will slow the spread of the venom.
* Call 000; also, if you can tell the doctors what snake bit
you it helps with applying the correct anti-venin more
quickly.

Gordon
development
refused

By Kate Taylor

A proposal for an eight-lot subdivision at Gordon has been

knocked on the head by Moorabool Shire Councillors.
With lot sizes ranging from 801sqm to 950sqm, the Corbetts
Road development was proposed in two stages, with four
lots completed in each.
However a report prepared by council offices found the
proposal does not comply with local plans and overlays, in
particular neighbourhood character and landscape values.
The proposed subdivision of the site to create eight lots
represents a relatively intensive scale of development. The
future development of each lot for a single dwelling would
in no way be in keeping with the character and appearance
of adjacent or nearby dwellings, the streetscape or the area
more generally, read a report prepared by council officers
and tabled at the 16 November meeting in Blackwood.
The proposal does not adequately satisfy the relevant
provisions of the Moorabool Planning Scheme, particularly
regarding State and local planning policy for neighbourhood
character, and the relevant zone and overlay provisions for
the development of land in Gordon.
Whilst subdivision of the site is considered to be suitable,
the current application does not respond appropriately to the
features of the site and surrounds and is an overdevelopment
of the site.
A total of nine objections to the proposal were received,
with three objectors speaking at the meeting.
A consultation meeting was held between the applicant and
the objectors, however no changes were made to the plans
as a result.
West Ward Councillor Tom Sullivan, a surveyor, left the
room during the vote, citing a conflict of interest.

Car parking policy

to be prepared
By Kate Taylor
A five-shop, four-unit development in Ballan has been approved
despite a distinct lack of car
parking.
The 23 November Development
Assessment Committee meeting
heard an application for a permit
to build the two-storey building with five lower level shops
topped with four two-bedroom
units, on Fisken St.
The application also included a
waiver of 11 of the required car
parking spaces to service the
development.
The site will provide nine spaces, one for each of the units and
shops.
A report on the application tabled at the meeting recommending approving the development.
While it is not considered that
the architectural form of the proposed development would necessarily be suitable in the main
street of Ballan, in Fisken Street
the development provides for
functionality, a diversity in accommodation choice and a number of small shops, or potentially
office spaces, to enable growth in
the retail spaces available in Ballan, it read.
The report pointed out that the
development is close to a council
car park available in Steiglitz St,
and Robert Eskdale, speaking on
behalf of the applicant, told the
meeting that a footpath would be

Sheds to

retrospective approval for five sheds
built on a Merrimu property.
The 23 November meeting of the
Development Assessment Committee
saw the application heard after councils
enforcement action against the five
outbuildings on the McKenzie Court
property that were built without the
required planning or building approvals.
The sheds are located at the front, side
and rear setbacks of the property and
are of varying size and appearance.
One objection to the application was
received, relating to the sighting and
appearance of the outbuildings, loss
of views and amenity, neighbourhood
character, vehicle crossovers, earthworks
and objects in the front setback.
Overall, the outbuildings are generally
considered to be acceptably sited and
designed. It is therefore recommended

Downsizing
puppy farms

The Moorabool News 29 November, 2016 Page 7

Repairs

patience

By Kate Taylor
New laws are set to place restrictions on a puppy farm being
built near Ballan.
The Domestic Animals Amendment (Puppy Farm and Pet
Shops) Bill 2016 is set to restrict breeding facilities to no more
than 10 female breeding dogs at one time.
A planning permit by Moorabool Shire Council currently
exists for a breeding establishment on the outskirts of Ballan
- council believes construction has commenced but is not
completed and therefore the establishment is not currently
operating.
The current permit allows a maximum of 50 dogs of which
no more than 42 can be bitches, and not including dogs
under eight weeks old.
Councils Manager of Statutory Planning and Community
Safety Rob Fillisch said that the new puppy farm laws would
impact the Ballan facility.
With a reduction in the number of fertile animals allowed,
this will impact anyone with a planning permit to breed cats
and dogs, he said.
Breeders will have to comply with new State legislation as
well as the conditions of their Council permit.

The New Puppy Farm Laws

Other changes included in the amendment are:
*
The amendments will reduce the number of fertile
female dogs a breeder can keep from as many as 350
to 10. Breeders will have until April 2020 to reduce their
numbers by naturally breeding out their dogs.
*
To crack down on backyard breeders, any Victorian
who keeps a fertile female dog and sells her puppies,
or who keeps three or more fertile female cats and sells
their kittens, will have to register with their council as a
domestic animal business.
*
The Government will also establish a new central
registry of domestic animal businesses, giving councils
the information they need to determine who is eligible
to register as a breeder and better police the new laws.
* Pet shops will no longer be able to sell puppies and
kittens unless they have come from a registered pound,
animal shelters or foster carer. This is consistent with
the practice of many pet stores operating in Victoria and
will close off a lucrative market for puppy farmers.
*
Foster carers who look after relinquished pets while
they wait for a new home will have clearer rights and
responsibilities they will be able to care for up to
five animals at a time without having to register as a
domestic animal business and will benefit from reduced
council registration fees.

War on weeds

By Jessica Howard
The Moorabool Landcare Network is
taking action to remove the headache that
is the blackberry weed.
The local community group has
received $15,000 for blackberry control
from Moorabool Shire Council and the
Victorian Blackberry Taskforce.
A local committee, titled the Moorabool
Blackberry Action Group (MooBAG), has
since been established and will target
areas such as Lal Lal, Blackwood, Barrys
Reef and Pentland Hills.
MooBag facilitator, Cate Kirk-Dufty said
that good spring rains would see the weed
spread to new sites in the summer.
Its looking like a good season for
blackberry growth and we need to get on
top of the problem early, she said.
Local residents have also been aware of
the problem, with Colleen Kirby from
Greendale raising awareness of the
obnoxious weed spreading throughout
the Spargo Creek area.

Due to track improvement works, coaches

will replace trains between Southern Cross
Station, Ballarat and Wendouree.

They have just been sitting in the bush

for years and now they are sneaking out,
she said.
Myrniong farmer, Ron Thompson said he
noticed the weed while horse riding on Mt
Blackwood Road.
I never knew there was so much
Blackberry here, he said.
Moorabool Landcare Network has
reached out to local landholders and have
been working with them to control the
weed throughout the shire.
MLN execute officer, Roger MacRaild
said the network had been working hard
on the Gorse weed in the west for the past
three years, but blackberry infestations
had been slowly expanding in the north.
MLN will hold a blackberry control
training workshop this month, that will
see participants obtain an Agriculture
Chemical User Permit.
The workshop will be held on December
3 and 10. For more information contact
Cate Kirk-Dufty on 0427 275 283.

More than $1.6 million will be

claimed by Moorabool Shire
Council to fix damage caused by
recent severe weather.
Wind and rain events in the
shire during September and October caused damage to roads in
more than 200 places, and more
than 60 locations where trees or
limbs required clearing.
Council can apply to the state
government for funding to repair
essential assets. But not everything is covered; with walking
trails and community infrastructure among those categories not
eligible.
Infrastructure General Manager
Phil Jeffrey said that temporary
restoration works have been undertaken to clear and re-open
roads however the significant
task of identifying, prioritising
and arranging repairs to roads,
paths, bridges and fallen trees
will take some time.
Repair works will continue
over the coming months and into
the New Year to restore these
assets. External contractors and
equipment will be used to undertake the remaining works on site,
to ensure Councils eligibility to
apply for funding assistance, Mr
Jeffrey said.
The current estimated damage
bill is in excess of $1.6 million.
The assessment and recovery
process will take time, so we ask
for the communitys patience
and understanding as we work
through everything that needs to
be done, Mr Jeffrey said.
Damage to walking trails, which
are not covered by the state government natural disaster funding, include trails along the Lerderderg River in Bacchus Marsh
and the Werribee River in Ballan.

Plumes of blooms
Roses were in abundance at
the annual Ballan Red Cross

Despite the recent wet

I wasnt sure what to

thought there might have

recent weather pattern. But I
was wrong, Mr Bob Whitehead OAM said.

Moorabool is among newly elected councils being

encouraged to use new VicHealth data to improve the health
of residents.
VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said as newly elected
councillors across the state gather to plan for the future and
determine what they want to deliver to their communities
over the next four years, VicHealth has released a major
population health survey to inform council Municipal
Health and Wellbeing plans currently being developed.
The 2015 VicHealth Indicators Survey interviewed almost
23,000 people from across the state, including respondents
from each of Victorias 79 local government areas. LGA
profiles, with localised health and wellbeing data including
life satisfaction, general wellbeing, physical activity levels
and alcohol consumption statistics, have been provided to
councils to assist them with their planning, CEO Rechter
said.
The data provides councils with an incredible opportunity
to see how the health and wellbeing of their local community
compares with the rest of the state and gives them the tools
to support their residents to live healthier, happier lives.
Residents can visit www.healthsnapshot.com.au to see how
their health and wellbeing measures up against the average
ratings for the rest of the state and their local area and make
informed choices to improve their health and prevent chronic
disease.
Small changes over time can make a big difference. Setting
simple achievable goals, like eating one extra piece of fruit or
vegetable per day or going for an additional walk each week
and slowly increasing those goals over time can make major
differences to our health and wellbeing in the long term.

15 years for punching, bashing and stabbing

By Jessica Howard
A Darley resident who fatally stabbed a man he blamed
for burgling his house has
been jailed for at least 15
years.
Daniel Nathan Parry, 37,
was sentenced in the Supreme Court of Victoria on
Friday November 11.
He will serve up to 19 years
in prison with a non-parole
period of 15 years for the
murder of 30-year-old Werribee man Gary Coulson.
The court heard that on
June 25 of last year, Parry
contacted the police following a break-in at his Darley
property.
A number of items were
allegedly stolen including
televisions, laptops and an
iPad.
Parry, a long-term drug
user, believed the victim was
responsible for the breakin, however had no hard
evidence.
On July 5 2015, Parry allegedly visited an address

where Mr Coulsons mother,

brother and two sisters were
present.
The accused told the victims mother that her son
owed him money.
After receiving the victims address, the accused
attended the house in Werribee with two co-accused at
around 8pm.
The court heard that Parry
entered the house and located the bedroom, where
Coulson and his girlfriend
were asleep in bed.
Parry allegedly punched
Coulson in the face before
striking him with a black
aluminium bat.
The accused then proceeded to stab Coulson with a
knife several times before
the victims girlfriend began
screaming.
Parry and the co-accused
fled the house, carrying the
knife with them, but leaving
the aluminium bat behind in
the bedroom.
An ambulance was called,

however the victim went

into cardiac arrest on the
way to the hospital and was
pronounced dead at 8:32pm.
At 10pm, Parry allegedly
sent a text message to his
girlfriend that read, It didnt

go down exactly as I wanted

but I am home and 100 per
cent injury free.
An autopsy conducted on
the victim the following day
revealed 21 stab wounds to
the body.

In a police interview conducted on July 7, Parry stated

that it was the victim who
had produced the knife.
There was a struggle over
the knife and then next
thing I knew was Garry had
dropped and I had the knife
in my hand, the statement
read.
The court heard that the
victim was known to keep
a knife on him, however his
girlfriend believed police
had seized it a few weeks
prior to the incident.
Parrys defence stated that
his client, who was under
the influence of ice at the
time, was angry with the
victim for allegedly stealing the property that he had
battled to acquire since being released from jail in late
2012.
He said Parry had a longterm history of drug use
and had gone through a significant period of depression
and anxiety following the
separation from his son, who
moved interstate with the

ex-partner of the accused.

In August 2010, Parry was
sentenced to one-year imprisonment for stalking,
contravening a family violence intervention order and
two counts of threatening to
kill, the court heard.
Justice Beale said with the
known prior convictions,
Parry was to be sentenced as
a serious violent offender.
He said the accused had
acted as a vigilante by deciding to take the law into his
own hands.
You enlisted the aid of others to assist you. You went
to the victims home intending to inflict serious injury
upon him and you brought
a weapon with you for that
purpose, he said.
You attacked the deceased
in his home, barging into
his bedroom where he was
sleeping beside his partner.
Justice Beale said the
meaningful parole period
of 15-years was to promote
rehabilitation.

POOL SAFETY: KNOW YOUR OBLIGATIONS
Moorabool Shire Council is reminding property owners that every private swimming pool or
spa capable of containing a depth of water exceeding 300mm requires a building permit prior
to its installation.
The building permit will specify that a childproof safety fence and gate must be built and approved
before the swimming pool or spa can be used. The importance of adequate and compliant
fencing around home pools and spas cannot be underestimated.
Drowning is the most common cause of preventable death for children under 5 years of age in
Victoria. Pool fencing signicantly reduces the risk of drowning with research showing that the
risk of drowning in a fenced pool is about one quarter of that of drowning in an unfenced pool.
Our children need to be protected from such accidental drowning.
Safety Fence Tips
Maintain gates and fences regularly to ensure they comply with the Building Regulations.
Fit correct safety measures to gates, doors and windows.
Make sure no tree branches, pool pumps or pot plants etc are near the safety fence and be
sure that anything able to be climbed is not placed in a position where children could climb to
gain access to the pool or spa.
A safety fence is required if you have an inatable pool lled with water which is deeper than
300mm.
Position any chairs, boxes, pool pumps etc so that they cannot be used to climb the fence to
access the pool or spa.
Pool and Spa Regulations
It is law that swimming pools or spas on private residential properties in Victoria are provided
with safety fences to restrict access to the pool or spa.
Swimming pools that require safety fences: in-ground pools, above ground pools, hot tubs,
Jacuzzis and spas.
Any pool or spa fence, gate or door must be maintained in good working order.
All gates and doors providing access to a pool or spa must have self-closing and self-latching
devices and open away from the pool even pools and spas built before laws were introduced
in 1991 to make fencing compulsory.
It is an offence to prop open any gate or door providing access to a pool or spa.
A building permit must be obtained prior to the installation of all pools and spas with a depth
greater than 300mm and for the safety barrier.
FINES
The Building Act 1993 contains penalties for pool owners who install a pool or spa and fail to
carry out work in accordance with the Act.

street lighting), read a report on the policy tabled at
the meeting.
The Strategy will be the
key document for guiding
Council planning, decision
making and activities that
impact on the natural environment and sustainability
in Moorabool Shire.
The report also noted that
workshops have been held

with internal and external

stakeholders

input as to the efficacy of
actions Council have previously undertaken in relation
to sustainability and environmental management.
A vision and targets for the
new Strategy have also been
developed based on what
Council could reasonably

Tyson.

Soothing comfort

Anyone confined to a hospital bed or chair for prolonged

periods of time can be vulnerable to pressure wounds. The
Hospital Auxiliary in Ballan has handed over a mattress to
help with the problem.
The purchase of a $2,312 Sweden CuroCell Area mattress
was handed over to Ballan District Health & Care from
members who raised the funds from their fund raising
activities.
A spokesperson for BDH&C said the mattress contains
nine air cells that are divided into zones, which adapt
automatically to the user, reducing pressure.
Ballan District Health & Care provides the recommended
approach to prevent pressure wounds, which involves
regular changes of position, good hygiene and skin care, and
a healthy diet.
The Auxiliarys donation adds another tool to support
BDH&C to maintain the highest level of care.
The Ballan Hospital Auxiliary held its first meeting on May
21 in 1946. Seventy years later this wonderful community
organisation goes from strength to strength, hosting fabulous
events and raising money to benefit patients and residents at
Ballan District Health & Care, the spokesperson said.

Xander Anthony HURREN is the first baby for Melton West

parents Courtney and Glen Hurren. Weighing 8lb 8oz (3830
grams), the little boy arrived on Tuesday 22 November at
2.49pm.

Jacob has a new sister, Scarlett Olivia. Born to Melton

parents Nicole and Russell on Thursday 24 November,
Scarlett arrived at 10.03am and weighed 2960 grams.

TOM

Environmental Opinion

with Tom Kingston

Numbers speak for themselves

PAUL

Bill McKibben is an American. His new president

is Donald Trump. Donald
Trump, it seems, does not
support any action on climate change. Bill McKibben stands in strong contrast to Donald Trump. To
even the ledger somewhat I
would like to quote in this
opinion piece from Bill McKibben. This piece is also
in honour of the Trump
Corporation.
Bill speaking on corporations: the reason we
shouldnt count corporations as humans isnt that
they are bad, it is that
theyre simple. They do the
thing they do with great
power if you need a car
built or an oil well drilled, a
corporation is an amazing
tool. It can gather resources
from great distances, carry
them exactly where they

are needed, and combine

various skills to produce
something of great value
from crude raw materials.
But being powerful is not
the same as being complex. Human beings are
complicated. We have instinctual desires and cravings that drive much of our
behaviour. But these are
tempered by strange and
wonderful forces outside
ourselves, such as art the
making of something of
significance out of nothing.
We can remember our ancestors, and we can imagine our grandchildren and
so sometimes we act in odd
and
counter-instinctual
ways. We can cry when
we see a hungry person,
and even empty our pockets to feed them. Or we
sometimes vote for politicians who will raise our

taxes and give the money

to the poor (unfortunately
this was not the case with
Donald Trump). A corporation, far more wonderful
in its abilities to execute a
plan than any of us individuals, is nonetheless uncomplicated. It doesnt care
much about the past and
cant think very far into the
future. If it does, it shareholders will rebel. In other
words, if you goal is to efficiently tap the tar sands
for oil you need a corporation. But to decide if taping the tar sands is a good
idea, you need to keep the
corporations out of it. Their
relentless simplicity will
combine with their wealth
to overwhelm reason, science, love.
Bill continues: Three
numbers: 2, 565, 2,795.
2 the only figure the

Perspective

world has agreed on about

climate change. So far we
have raised the temperature 0.8 degrees and that
has caused far more damage than any scientist expected and the oceans are
30% more acidic. A leading
authority on hurricanes
writes, Any number above
1 degree involves a gamble. Or as Thomas Lovejoy, the World Banks chief
environmental
advisor,
If were seeing what we
are seeing today at 0.8 degrees, 2 degrees is simply
too much. James Hansen
says The target that has
been talked about in international negotiations for
2 degrees of warming is
actually a prescription for
long-term disaster. Most
scientists say that if we
stopped increasing carbon
dioxide now the tempera-

ture would rise another 0.8

degrees which means that
we are actually over three
quarters of our way to 2 degrees already.
565 565 gigatons is
roughly how much more
carbon dioxide scientists
say humans can pour into
the atmosphere by midcentury and still have some
reasonable hope of staying
below 2 degrees. Reasonable means 4 chances in 5.
At the current rate of carbon burning we will pass
565 gigatons in about 15
years before a baby born
today makes it through
high school.
2795 2794 gigatons is the
amount of carbon already
contained in the proven
coal, oil and gas reserves
of the fossil fuel companies
and countries. Its the fossil
fuel we are currently plan-

ning to burn. The key point

is that 2795 is five times
higher than 565. We already have 5 times as much
oil and coal and gas on
the books as any scientist
thinks is safe to burn. We
would have to keep 80% of
those reserves locked away
underground to avoid that
fate. But this coal and gas
and oil is figured into share
prices, companies are borrowing money against it,
nations are basing their
budgets on the presumed
returns from their patrimony. If this 80% were left
underground you would
be writing off more than
$20 trillion worth of assets,
much of it belonging to the
richest people on earth
What is your opinion?

Driving - Privilege, Right, or necessity?

A couple of weeks ago I
needed to renew my drivers
license. My file photo was
over 20 years old, so a trip
into Vicroads was the order
of the day. I have to say if
youre planning a day out
of fun and frivolity you
would be better off having
an appointment with your
proctologist.

Putting aside the fact that

sitting at Vicroads waiting
for your number to come up
on the big screen is like waiting for happy hour at the
funeral parlour; its fair to
say that just about anything
to do with motor vehicular
activities can be done online.
A small blessing for those
on anti-depressants or those
that still consider small
pleasantries as a good way
to start the day.

Another tip for those filling

out Vicroads forms, make
sure you get someone to
check your work, because
if you inadvertently tick the
wrong box, a slip of the ballpoint and you will get the

rough end of the Vicroads officer; a look that would scare

farm machinery!

Back to the point. So I go in

to get my licenses renewed,
get a new photo and exchange pleasantries with
the Vicroads staff, get the
paperwork wrong, get chastised by the officer for not
knowing that the form they
sent out wasnt the form I
was supposed to fill in, and
apologised for being an inconvenience; for basically
existing.

It probably didnt help that

in my poor attempt at humour, sarcasm probably
more to the point, I suggested that the customer service sign on the counter was
probably talking it up a bit.
I am glad I didnt say what I
really thought.
Whilst I am sure there are
some friendly officers at Vicroads, but I always get the
grumpy one, maybe thats
what the number system is
all about. I reckon the machine takes a photo of me

and directs me to the dont

mess with me, Im having a
bad day desk.

Its probably a good thing

they dont have a customer
complaints desk; they would
probably run out of tickets
and you would have to go to
the having a bad day desk
to get a ticket to the customer complaints desk.
Its not like the cost of renewing your license is a
token gesture to the State
Government coffers, it cost
me $467 for my truck and
boat license. Whilst I dont
expect scones and coffee for
my donation, a civil discussion is a small price to pay
for my custom.
The upside is I dont need
another renewal for my drivers license for 10 years, and
my boat for another five; but
I seriously question the cost.
Its not like they check to see
if you can actually drive or
not, they simply give you a
quick eye test, and as long as
you not Mr Magoos second
cousin, youre right to go.

My last two licenses were

sent to me at no charge. Apparently I didnt lose a point
for 20 years so under an old
scheme you got your license
for gratis. They no longer do
that; there must be too many
good drivers on the road,
and it was costing them too
much money.

So thank you to all the bad

drivers on the road over the
last 20 years, you have saved
me a fortune; I still havent
lost any points, but just because Im paying shouldnt
suggest that I should be
playing. The fact that I have
probably been driving my
wifes car when the camera picks me up is a minor
consideration.
Having said that, I have
held a license for the best
part of 40 years, and I have
never been tested to see if I
know the road rules, or even
whether I can drive a motor
vehicle. Even when I got my
B-double licence I didnt do
a test at Vicroads; just did a
course, and the Army gave

me my first license without

doing a test; so I have literally been driving around
untested for 40 years.

Back in the day, the local

country policeman used to
issue a licence, and you used
to drive there to get it. The
fact that you made it there
without hitting anything
was justification enough to
take to the road and never
look back.

Country kids seem to all

learn to drive before they
can reach the pedals, but I
am not sure being able to
drive a vehicle and being a
good driver belong in the
same sentence. My own kids
all were taught how to drive
before they were teenagers;
the youngest has been backing B-doubles since he was
12.
There is no doubt living in
the bush presents a number of transport logistical
problems. When I was a kid,
young people took the back
roads to get to work, because
they werent old enough to

have a licence. Imagine if

you did that today?

You have to feel for young

people that leave school to
get an apprenticeship that
have to rely on mum or dad
to get them to job sites. With
all the different P-plates and
L-plates, maybe we should
have an A-plate for apprentices to drive to and from
work when they turn 16.

Country kids are isolated

in terms of transport, and if
they have no way of getting
to work until they are 18,
their opportunities are limited by local employment,
and they are disadvantaged
into the future.
If we are serious about supporting youth and giving
them an opportunity to contribute, we need to provide
the basic tools to contribute
with. If they are old enough
to build the houses and factories we work and live in,
they are old enough to drive
themselves to work. We just
need to teach them properly.

More charges follow record theft

By Jessica Howard
A Ballan man on bail for
stealing $8,000 worth of vinyl records has faced fresh
charges in court.
Shaun Taylor appeared in
Ballarat Magistrates Court
on Thursday (November 24)
charged with a string of offences including handling
stolen goods and theft of a
motor vehicle.
Taylor was initially granted

bail on August 16 following 19 charges including a

number of drug and weapon
offences and the theft of the
extensive record collection,
which was stolen from a
storage unit near Ingliston.
A police officer from the
Moorabool Crime Investigation Unit told the court
on Thursday that Taylor
had been arrested the night
before following a string
of break-ins at Ballan and

WHATS ON

On October 27, the caravan

and a number of stolen items
were located at Hunts Bridge
Camping Area in Elaine.
Upon searching the caravan, police found personal
items belonging to the original owner as well as two
chainsaws and various electrical items.
The door of the caravan had
been forcefully opened and
inquires showed that the
registration plates did not

match the vehicle.

At 12:45pm, Taylor, who
was observed driving past
the campsite, was arrested
and taken to the Bacchus
Marsh Police Station.
It is believed the accused
towed the caravan two days
prior to his arrest, despite
being a disqualified driver.
Police told the court that
Taylor had failed to answer
his initial bail conditions on
more than 20 occasions and

was an unacceptable risk to

the community.

Taylor, who was not represented in court, said he

was worried about his
three young children, one
of whom had an upcoming
birthday.
However, Magistrate Andrew Capell refused bail
and remanded Taylor in custody for further mention on
December 9.

McIntyre First X1v Diggers Rest

Diggers Rest batted first with the bowlers
performing well, restricting the opposition
to a score of 154 after claiming all 10 wickets.
M. Ekanayaka 2-37 off 19 overs, R. Watson
1-29 off 10 overs, I. Spiteri 2-6 and T. McColl
2-13.
The battsmen struggled to keep the scoreboard ticking over and a lack of partnerships
saw the Bulls bowled out for 116, falling short
of the Diggers first innings score of 154. M.
Sepala with 32 the only batsman that manageda decent score. With 20 overs remaining the Diggers went back in scoring 6-146.
M. Sepala continued on with his form from
the bat and claiming 4/41 at the close of play
with the ball.

Seniors

The Darley Lions First XI

have suffered their first loss
of the season in the Ballarat
Cricket Association, being
dismissed for 147 trying to
chase down Mount Clears
score of 214 at St Patricks
College on Saturday.
The Lions, who started the
day at 0/30, batted for only
36 overs on Day 2.
Captain / coach Heath
Pritchard backed up his five
wicket haul with the top
score of 43, recommencing
his innings after the fall of
the first wicket having retired hurt with a hamstring
twinge last week, but when
Pritchard was dismissed
after the Lions had worked
their way to 5/139 with
Pritchard and Brad Barnes
putting on 43 for the sixth
wicket, they lost 5/8 once
Pritchard was dismissed to
be all out for 147.
The Lions will now host last
years grand finalists Brown
Hill at Darley Park next
weekend.
It was a similar story for
the Lions other two-day
teams, with the Second XI
dismissed for 175 trying to
chase down Coronet Citys
212.
Their script was very similar to that of their senior
counterparts, in that they
lost wickets at regular intervals early on before captain
Marcus Ingvorsen, who topscored with a well-made 73,
combined with young gun
Mitch Ward (34) to put together a 76-run stand for the
fifth wicket to give the Lions
a sniff of victory, but when
Ingvorsen and Ward were
both dismissed with the
score on 168, the tail order

was soon cleaned up and the

Lions innings concluded on
175 not long after.
The Third XI fell well short
of the target of 268 that
North Ballarat set for them
last weekend, all out for 133.
Andrew Kannar gave some
resistance with a top score
of 67 batting at three, but
this accounted for half of the
Lions score as only Daniel
Hynes (20) and Josh Fitzgerald (18) joined him in double
figures.
The Lions Fourth XI was
the good-news story of the
day though, comfortably
defeating Napoleons-Sebastopol in their one-day game.
After the Lions made 5/194
off their allotted 40 overs, led
by a swashbuckling 70 from
Brandon Hughes, which
contained 10 fours and two
sixes, and an unbeaten 58
from James Higgins, the Lions bowled out Naps-Sebas
for 108, with Hughes taking
three wickets to move within striking distance of the
top four after their second
consecutive win.

Juniors

The Darley Lions 16 & Under side have suffered another defeat in the Ballarat
Cricket Association, going
down to a strong Golden
Point side on Saturday.
After scoring 137 in the first
week of their two-day game,
the Lion cubs were confident that they could bowl
their way to their first victory of the season, however
the Pointies had other ideas,
compiling 8/299 off their 50
overs to post a comfortable
win, with Central Highlands
representative player Sam
Harris making an even 100
before retiring.
Left-arm paceman Mitch
Ward toiled hard to record
the figures of 4/20 off nine
overs as Darleys best bowler, with Regan King claiming two wickets and Tyler
Cox one.

The Lions 14 & Under First

XI side just fell short of victory in their two-day fixture
against Elaine. The Lions recommenced their innings at
5/64 to start play on the second day of the game last Saturday and were dismissed
for 92, with Will Johnson
progressing his score to 19
before being dismissed to
top-score for the side. It
didnt give them much room
to play with, as Elaine recommenced on 8/87, and
whilst Darley were able to
claim the final two Elaine
wickets, the damage was
done as Elaine finished on
100, taking home the points.
It was better news for Darleys 14 & Under Second XI
side though, who scored a
handsome victory over VRI
Delacombe at Doug Dean
Reserve. The Lions scored
8/189 over both weeks of
their batting, with Aaron
Cadman, who scored an unbeaten half-century, Rockey
Hoey (38 not out) and captain
Brodie Ward (30) leading the
way with the bat before dismissing VRI Delacombe for
148, with Ethan Thewma
taking 3/21 to lead the bowling, Ward and Logan Moffat taking two wickets and
Kurtis Beck and Zane Colley
snaring one wicket each.
In the Under 12 competition, the Darley Cubs
couldnt keep their winning ways going against a
strong St Anthonys Gold
side at Arnolds Creek, with
St Anthonys scoring 1/142
over both weeks; with Patrick Jarvinen claiming the
only wicket for Darley in the
first week of the game, and
whilst the Cubs lost only
two wickets on the second
day, they could only progress their score to 6/92, with
Angus Jones score of nine
not out. The Cubs will play
Eynesbury Eagles Green at
the Hub over the next two
Friday nights.

24-21 and Peter Garland had

a tight tussle on his hands
until winning 9 ends in a
row after the tea break to
claim a 27-16 win.
Greg Holt finished with a
22-22 draw while Wayne
Martin did all he could to
hold on for a close 20-25 loss.
The win has Bacchus Marsh
well clear on top of the ladder despite still having at
least six regular players
missing from their team.
