Social - Make Connections Through Activity - January 2017

When we exercise we meet other people who have similar likes and interests. Exercising with
people and creating connections is motivating and fun. For children it is important to find
activities and sports that they can participate in and make friends.
Sports can benefit children by building self-confidence and promoting mental and physical wellbeing. Team sports, in particular, provide a child with additional social benefits. Whether a child
is the star of the team or the second string, the team aspect teaches skills a child can use in
athletics and in everyday life (Morris, 2015).
During the month of January children will connect through a Sports Fair that is held every
Saturday at our local Community Center. Children and their parents will learn about a variety of
sports, meet players and coaches, visit teams (recreational and competitive), and learn about
exercise classes. Those that choose to sign up for an activity will also be paired with a sports
buddy through the mentoring program. The fair is a great place for the childrens parents to meet
others and learn about the social aspect that occurs in sports.

Emotional - When We Eat Better, We Feel Better - February 2017
A recent study confirmed that a poor diet that was high in saturated fats and caloric levels lead to
depression (Wenk, 2015). A lack of certain vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin B12, calcium
and iron, can be correlated with symptoms of depression (Allane, 2015). Children need to eat a
balanced diet that includes protein, fruits, vegetables in order to feel good from the inside out.
When consuming a balanced diet they will feel better, be an active participant in school and
enjoy after school activities. Weekly there will be literature available about the connection

between emotional health and food that is consumed. Demonstrations that teach children

Physical - Get Active - March 2017
Physical activity helps control weight, builds lean muscle, reduces fat, promotes strong bone,
muscle and joint development, and decreases the risk of obesity. Children need 60 minutes of
play with moderate to vigorous activity every day to grow up to a healthy weight
(http://www.letsmove.gov). First Lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama has created energy around the
obesity epidemic in America. She has helped promote physical activity and healthy eating for
children. During the month of March there will be weekly activities that can be done with
children or adults to increase their daily physical activity. The Wednesday Walking Club will
occur weekly with a different theme to energize staff. Each staff member will be given a fitbit to
track and tally their daily steps.

challenge. During the month of June we will hold sessions that will assist in helping you create
meal templates, lists of ingredients and we will have your groceries delivered to your home to

will be sent out to encourage food diversity. Every Thursday in the month of June from 11 am to
