INTRODUCTION

Introduction
Almost two years have passed since the introduction
of the Konica 7060 Workgroup Document System,
and the Konica product line is still the leader in digital connected technology with our wide range of 33
ppm to 60 ppm products. When the Konica 7060
was launched it raised the bar on competition that
is still trying to recover. But at a time when Konica is
experiencing its greatest success, we are going even
further. Today we introduce the Konica 7065
Workgroup Document System and the IP-303 print
controller.

We could not talk about all the exciting new features

of the Konica 7065 without including the IP-303
print controller. We are positioning the 7065 not as a
copier with printing functionality, but as a full-featured workgroup printer with copier functionality as
well. In addition, since the Konica 7065 is the only
digital product that the IP-303 will currently drive,
we have decided to include it in this marketing
guide.
The IP-303 is developed on the same VxWorks platform that is common to all of our IP products, and
dynamically transforms the controller design into
the 21st century. Our goal with the IP-303 product is
to take the Konica 7065 and bring Distributech into
CRD and high-end printing environments.

This Konica 7065 ProGuide, which includes the IP303 print controller information, will take you inside
the products to help you understand why we built
them and how they will dramatically transform the
way business is done today!

The launch of the Konica 7065 is much more than

just a single product introduction; rather, it is the
introduction of the first machine designed to meet
the demands of the Print on Demand(POD) market.
In todays world, POD serves a much wider market
than just the print shops, centralized reprographic
departments and print shops of 10 years ago; it is
expected in almost every high-volume office environment.

You are among the select few salespeople in this

industry who have eight different high-end multifunctional connected products. What is even bigger
news is that Konica will have two additional midrange and high-end connected digital products by
mid-year. That means that we will come to market
with six products before most companies have one
connected product. We have over 50,000 high-end
digital products at end user locations (40% connected). As you will read in the pages to follow, the
development of the IP-303 brings even more excitement to a great product line.

Konicas Digital Story

Konica was the first to launch a 50 ppm digital printer/copier in 1995. Konica has the largest connected
install base with over 50,000 mid- and mid/high2

for all users. Now every individual wants the power
of a print shop on his/her desk.

range digital printers and printer/copiers at end user

locations. Konica has the most complete line of connected page/document printers available today! All
of Konicas current printer/copier line is connectable
TODAY! Konica has mastered contention issues on
its entire product line by allowing multiple users to
take on printing and copying tasks simultaneously.
Konica designs and manufactures print controllers
for the real world office environment. While many
products on the market today offer low cost print
options, in the real world environment from the
workgroup to the enterprise, Konicas IP Series print
controllers are designed to maximize productivity
and provide scalability and flexibility. Making the
wrong choice in controller technology can significantly impact the productivity of the users, which is
a far greater cost than the entire system cost of a connected digital product.

Digital technology, the personal computer, the

Internet, and networks have given multiple users
access to huge amounts of information. In fact, there
is almost too much information with no way to output quickly and conveniently...until the introduction
of the Konica 7065 printer/copier. Todays easy-touse desktop publishing software allows the processing of the information into finished documents at
the desktop. The full power of document creation is
now in the hands of individual users. But...
The power of distributing and printing has remained
in the central reprographic department, the local
print shop or, more simply at the copier. Now the
Konica 7065 puts the power of the print shop, the
power to distribute and print, at the individuals
desktop. And simply, thats what todays digital office
demands.

Print on Demand - Not Just a Niche

Market... Its Todays Business

Print and Distribute vs. Distribute

and Print

How to tap into the POD market has been a hot

button topic since the introduction of the first
Xerox DocuTech system almost 10 years ago. This
large, expensive machine put the power of a print
shop into the back office environment. Now, however, the demand is for the same robust features and
cost-effective production brought to the front office

One of the major reasons for todays demand for

more ability from the desktop is the new paradigm
of distribute and print versus the more familiar
print and distribute. The ability to assemble documents electronically meant the end of cut and paste,
print and warehouse. And then there is the cost.
Printing and warehousing excess quantities of documents has become cost-prohibitive.

Print On Demand - U.S. Market Total

Annual Equipment Revenue

At the recent Print On Demand trade show, we

learned that a major publisher of educational materials was having professors at a number of major universities take head-counts at the beginning of the
semester. The publisher then is printing only the
required number of textbooks. Without the waste of
hundreds of unused and dated textbooks at the end of
the year, the publisher expects to save hundreds of
thousands of dollars.

Just a few short years ago the best way to distribute a

document throughout an organization was to produce multiple sets of the same document and hand
deliver or mail to the intended recipient. With the
advent and proliferation of personal computers,
email, the Internet, and networks, the majority of
todays information is sent digitally and printed by
individuals at their workstations.

duce the finished document faster, more conveniently, and at less cost than sending jobs to a single location in the back office or down the street. Customers
are demanding advanced capabilities, including complete finishing, from an economical, shared digital
output device located within their local workgroup
or department.

The Konica 7065 is the latest in a long line of digital

printer/copiers designed to bring productivity in the
office to new heights. It has been engineered from
top to bottom with the Print On Demand environment in mind. What does that really mean? It means
the ability to actually distribute and print a professionally finished document directly from the workstation. Features include:

And now they can...with the introduction of the

Konica 7065 Workgroup Document System and the
IP-303 print controller.
Not only does the Konica 7065 put the power of the
print shop at the users keyboard, but it also has
numerous advantages vs. the higher-end printing
solutions currently available in the POD environment, including;

Time to market is mission critical for growth.

The CEO knows it is time to reduce costs and

increase productivity of an already lean staff.

The CFO and the IT director want to continue to

maximize the substantial investment in technology thats been made to update processes, networks,

HOW:

know how important it is to make contacts outside

the standard purchasing department channel. The
ability to connect a piece of office equipment to the
network almost always means that at least the
IT department and sometimes a variety of departments or divisions within an organization will be
involved. An easy-to-use but advanced product like
the Konica 7065 quite simply means that the customer is opting to change the document workflow
within the organization. All departments will benefit from the addition of a product like the Konica
7065.

To sell the Konica 7065 correctly, you have to position this product not just as a robust and feature-rich
copy machine, but as an integral part of the connected digital office environment. As you can see in this
ProGuide, the Konica 7065 is optimized when connected with the IP-303 print controller. This digital
printer will give users an opportunity to do more
directly from their desktop than ever before.

its addition. How you position the Konica 7065
from the outset will determine how far you get in an
organization.
When Konicas previous 50 and 60 page per minute
digital printers/copiers were introduced, there was
still a lot of competition from standalone analog
copiers. Now the competitors are offering digital
products in almost every speed category. In todays
digital age it is imperative that the Konica 7065 be
positioned as a multifunctional printer/copier. The

Document Finishing
The Konica 7065 is being launched with a standard
finisher that is similar to the Konica 7060s FS-103B,
except we now have 8-position stapling. A few short
months later, the FS-108B, an exciting new finishing
tool (available 4th quarter 99), will offer in-line
folding, saddle-stitching, optional post print insertion, and trimming. The FS-108B finisher will be discussed in this ProGuide, but please look for more
detailed information as that product becomes available.
The FS-106 Finisher features two basic finishing
modes: Auto Selection and Fixed Selection Mode. In
Auto Selection Mode, the Konica 7065 automatically
adjusts the staple location based on document orientation. In Fixed Selection Mode, the Image Rotation
feature is utilized to provide stapling solutions for
unique applications.
Having two available finishers results in having the
right finisher for the right application. Unlike some
competitors products that force their customers to
pay more for features they may never use, by offering
a single finisher, the Konica 7065 offers both a standard finisher and a finisher that also offers saddlestitching and folding. The choice is yours!

Konicas current printer copier line is connectable TODAY!

Konica has mastered contention issues on its

entire product line by allowing multiple users to
take on printing and copying tasks simultaneously.

Konica designs and manufactures print controllers

for the real world office environment. While
many products on the market today offer low cost
print options, Konicas IP Series print controllers
are designed to maximize productivity and provide
scalability and flexibility in the real world, from
the workgroup environment to the enterprise environment. Making the wrong choice in controller
technology can significantly impact the productivity of the users, which is a far greater cost than the
entire system cost of a connected digital product.
date the different speed and memory). Xerox knows
this fate all too well. It took them close to two years
after the DC 265 was originally sold to the point
when they could connect. Who can connect not only
its newest printer but also its first generation printer
with the same print controller? Konica can! The IP
Print Controller is developed to protect the investment of our customers. Not even Xerox, Ricoh,
Canon or Minolta can boast about protecting the
investment of the customer. Only Konica can.

updates for the very latest on the competition.
Here are some of the IP-303 selling features:

Konicas New Open Architecture (NOA)

Developed by the Konica System Technology
Center utilizing VxWorks embedded Real Time
Multitasking Operating System. NOA defines flexibility, scalability and efficiency. With NOA, Konica
IP controllers deliver a truly modular design. The
benefit to this module-based approach is clear:
opportunity. Adding new capabilities, like tandem
printing, is as simple as adding a new module.
The benefit is that you can adjust the system capabilities to meet the changing needs of the workgroup.
Intelligent Job Processing
The NOA architecture utilizes random access
memory to spool incoming pages to the system
Hard Drive and to store rasterized pages prior to
their being sent to the print engine. This technology leverages both the speed of RAM, which operates in nanoseconds, and the capacity of the internal hard drive to maximize throughput speed and
minimize network traffic.
Custom CIC Technology
Konicas custom-developed interface card controls
the communication between the IP-303 and the
Konica 7065. The CIC acts as a bridge between the
video interface card in the Konica 7065 printer
and the IP-303 motherboard. The CIC board utilizes a Motorola 68331 CPU with custom logic
and software for communicating with and controlling the 7065 printer. This separate processing
function offloads the machine control and communications functions, allowing the main CPU to
allocate all of its resources for rasterization. The
CIC technology eliminates the delay normally
associated with data flow and data management
between the printer/copier and the controller.

System DataBase
The NOA architecture utilizes a system database
component to log system functions; and any
anomalies that may occur are monitored and
stored. This supports seamless error recovery; in
the event a print goes off-line, the controller has
the intelligence to re-submit the job.

Common Controller Architecture

The NOA architecture is common among all
Konica IP products. While the controller hardware
will be different based on the machine speed and
capabilities, the NOA operating system remains
the same. No other manufacturer can make such a

Multi - Platform Support

While most manufacturers provide Windows and
Novell networking support, the IP series products
provide optional support for host print environments, including: AS/400 SCS, IPDS, and AFP support in both Twinax and Ethernet environments
and command line print filters for most major
UNIX operating systems. This support provides an
unparalleled level of capability in multi-protocol
environments.

KN-301 Network Print Server

Unlike many products on the market today that
use network print servers connected via a parallel
port, the IP Series products offer the KN-301 network print server, which connects directly via the
PCI bus in the controller. This provides data transfer at a minimum of four times the speed of parallel-connected print servers. Of course, if the customers standard is a third party external print
server, the IP Series provides parallel support.

Web Based Printer Management

(Available 3rd Quarter 99): The KN-301 has an
internal HTTP server, which allows administrators
to control the print functions via a standard web
browser.

Tandem Print Support

The Konica 7065 is the markets first product to
offer tandem copy and tandem print simultaneously! This means it can handle more people with
smaller jobs. When things get busy, just switch
into high gear for fast tandem copy or print speeds
up to 130 PPM. Experience high volume print
capabilities without the high cost. Konicas optional Tandem Print functionality connects two
engines to one controller. This provides users with
twice the print speed as well as the added advantages of system flexibility and redundancy.
Konicas sophisticated Tandem Print technology
goes through a seven-step process to identify the
best method for producing a job.
1. Does one of the engines have the correct
Finisher for the job?
2. What is the print engine availability status?
(Power on/off, etc.)

15

HOME
PRODUCT
3. Which machine has the correct paper size?

4. Which machine has paper remaining?

These capabilities provide an unprecedented level of

flexibility in the high volume environment.

5. Is either engine currently experiencing a significant backlog (i.e., will the current job be printing for an hour)?

DistribuTech Imaging Architecture

Recognizing that the digital office requires the
integration of both hardware and software solutions, Konica has developed DistribuTech
Imaging Architecture to provide a platform for
digital production. DistribuTech is a comprehensive array of products and services designed to
meet both present and future document production needs in three primary areas.

Print Monitor Module

(Available 3th Quarter 99): The print monitor
module is an SNMP-based utility that gives users
and administrators bi-directional feedback on
machine status, capabilities, print queue, time to
complete print jobs and a variety of other machine
conditions.

Centralized Reprographic Module

Designed for the reprographics and print on
demand environments, this optional module,
which will be available in the fall of 1999, offers
enhanced management functions for production
environments, including:

Media Server
Print files directly from a floppy, ZIP or other
removable media without needing the application
software they were created in.

Job Viewing and Manipulation

View and manipulate PostScript print jobs before
producing them as finished documents.

Job Ticketing
Print jobs arriving at a remote printer are ticketed
to provide a job originator and job requirements
list. This service even provides a complete billing
template.

Enterprise Print Module

(Available in the year 2000) this software provides
features that enable distributed printing functionality throughout the enterprise, including:

Internet Printing
Print directly to a remote printer over the Internet.
Based on the Internet Print Protocol, this technology gives users the capability of distributing print
jobs to Konica printers that are not connected
locally.

6. Is there a primary and secondary machine?

7. Check for the lower PM counter level
Konicas Tandem print technology is also unique in
that it can support:

Different speeds - we can tandem 50, 60 and 65

PPM systems

Different finishers - we can tandem face up and

face down finishers

Different printers - we can tandem page and document printers

Job Recovery - If one engine fails the other will

Printer Search
Search available printers to find one that supports a specific capability the users job requires. For example, if the
users job requires saddle stitching, the software searches the network for a Konica product equipped with a
booklet maker.

Broadcast Print
Allows users to issue a broadcast print jobs request that targets selected recipients much like a broadcast fax. The
software would make the transport layer (LAN, WAN or Internet) transparent to the user.

These features are just a few examples of the technology being developed by Konica to help users create strategic
print initiatives that businesses will require to improve the way they produce, distribute and share information. The
IP Series is designed for both performance and flexibility. Most importantly, the modular software design provides

PRINTING FUNCTIONALITY AND CONTENTION

MANAGEMENT
The purpose of this section is to describe, in detail,
the Konica 7065s features and benefits when utilized
as a printer. Also included is a discussion of contention management, which describes how the
Konica 7065 effectively manages print jobs from
users who simultaneously try to access its features.

The Connected Product

After reading this section, you will be able to describe the Konica 7065 connected system to your customers as well as configure it. You will learn the following:

Dual Access
By far, one of the Konica 7065s greatest assets in
terms of contention management is the Dual Access
architecture. With Dual Access, two jobs can be concurrently stored in ERDH memory. In Copy Mode, a
new copy job can be programmed and stored into
memory while the Konica 7065 is busy copying a
previous job.

High End Printing Solutions

KN-301 NETWORK INTERFACE CARD/

WEB STATUS UTILITY

In Print Mode, the print controller will begin to

transfer rasterized pages to the ERDH while the
engine is busy printing or copying a previous job.
This provides a dramatic improvement in speed and
throughput over devices that do not accept pages
until the engine has completed print jobs or copy
jobs in progress.

The KN-301 Network Interface Card adds more to

the very impressive capabilities of Konicas KN-201
card by improving the communication speed,
throughput and the user interface. The exciting benefits include:

100BaseT
The first major benefit to the customer is 10/100
BaseT communication (Also called Fast Ethernet).
What will 100BaseT do for your customer? It is a
high-speed version of 10BaseT, providing communication at the rate of 100 Mbps rather than 10
Mbps. This increase reduces network traffic and
provides faster throughput.

In Combination Mode, a subsequent copy job can be

programmed and scanned into memory while the
Konica 7065 is busy printing.
To provide the Dual Access feature, the Konica 7065
utilizes a virtual memory partition. The available
memory for job two is directly related to the amount
of memory utilized by job one. For example:

PCI Bus Connection

Now, RIP data can go directly into the IP-303
Motherboard via PCI Bus communication so that
your customer no longer needs to tie up the parallel port to connect a network option to Konicas
IP-303 and other Konica print controllers. A free
parallel port allows your customer to plug in
directly to the IP-303, which will enable printing
from a notebook computer!

If job one utilizes 20% of available memory, 80%

is available for job two.

If job one utilizes 80% of available memory, 20%

is available for job two.

Dual Access Benefits

In workgroup environments, users may access the
Konica 7065 to input a job while it is busy process18

HOME
PRODUCT
ing another users job. This results in fewer lines at
the copier. Dual Access provides a tremendous
advantage when compared to analog copiers that can
only process one job at a time.

A description of the Job Status screen is included

below:

In production environments, operators will benefit

from the Konica 7065s increased throughput. In
print-for-pay businesses, paid operators need not
remain idle while waiting for their duplicators to finish copying. With the Konica 7065 and its dual
access capabilities, these operators will be able to
program and scan subsequent jobs, maximizing their
time and the business owners money.
Default Copy Mode
When the Konica 7065 is configured with the Video
Interface Kit and Print Controller, Dual Access can be
utilized so that it always defaults to the Copy Mode
even while print jobs are being processed.
Walking up to the Konica 7065, users are always presented with the Ready to Copy screen so that they
can immediately program and scan a copy job. If
there is no other job in progress, the copy job is handled immediately. If there is a print job in progress,
the copy job is scanned and held in memory. When
the print job in progress is completed, the copy job
is processed immediately. At that point, the Konica
7065 is available to accept another print or copy job.

1. Job 1 Status (Active Job)

2. Job 2 Status (Reserve Job)
3. Print Controller Status Area
4. Indicates job status (Scanning, Printing,
Waiting, Next)
5. Indicates number of pages in original set.
Counts up as pages are scanned into ERDH
memory or as pages are transferred to the
ERDH from the print controller.

Things to Remember about Dual Access

The Konica 7065s default is always copy mode.

Users are not required to press an F3 button to
enter copy mode.
Jobs are programmed and scanned even while the
engine is busy printing or copying.
Pages are transferred from the Print Controller
while the engine is busy printing or copying,
resulting in improved throughput.
Regardless of installed memory, a maximum of
two jobs can be in progress at one time.

6. Automatically multiplies the number of original pages by the number of sets selected to
obtain a total page count. The page count
decreases as each page is printed or copied
notifying users of pages remaining.
7. Indicates the time remaining until the active
job is completed.
Job Interrupt
Konica has developed a Job Interrupt feature for the
Konica 7065 to help manage contention. Using the
feature, customers can interrupt printing and copying
jobs in progress and gain immediate access to the
Konica 7065. The method for utilizing the Interrupt
function has been made cumbersome purposely to
discourage untrained users from disturbing workgroup harmony.
Job interrupt can be accessed by pressing the interrupt key while in the Setting area of the screen or
the Reserve area of the screen. Pressing Interrupt in
the Status area screen will effect no change. When
Interrupt is pressed, the Konica 7065 first completes the current set it is working on, then moves
that job to the Reserve buffer area, and makes the

Job Status Screen

To ease contention in multi-user environments,
Konica has developed a Status Screen for the Konica
7065 with easy access from the control panel. Just
press Status on the Konica 7065 touch screen to
display the Job Status Screen. Then press Settings
to resume the ready to copy screen. Thus users walking up to the machine, can readily see the jobs that
are in the Konica 7065s ERDH and more importantly, can determine the time remaining until the active
job is completed. In addition, an active job can be
interrupted to provide immediate access to the
Konica 7065s copying capability for users with emergency jobs.
19

HOME
PRODUCT
engine available to produce the interrupt copy job. All Konica 7065s features can be utilized with interrupt copying.
Once interrupt copying is completed, the Interrupt key is pressed again and the interrupted print or copy job
resumes. If Interrupt is pressed the first time and no activity takes place within 30 seconds, interrupt is canceled
and the interrupted job resumes automatically.
The above scenario describes a situation where both of the Konica 7065s ERDH buffers are available. In the event
there are two jobs in the Konica 7065s ERDH (print and copy) pressing Interrupt has the effect of inserting the
user in front of the waiting reserved job.

Printing Features
Feature

Description

Tandem Print/Copy
Simultaneously

For the first time in the industry, two printer copiers can be enabled to simultaneously print and copy in a tandem mode. No other vendor currently has the capability
to do both and few even have the ability to do either of the them individually.

Wait Mode

When using advanced features like Front and Back covers or special paper stocks,
users can select Wait and the Konica 7065 will not print until the user walks up to
the machine and confirms that the proper paper stock is loaded. The user then simply depresses the Start/Print key on the control panel and the job is printed.
Although this feature is not password protected, It can be used to support basic
secure printing.

Check Mode

The Check mode enables users to confirm that their job has been programmed correctly from the print driver prior to executing the entire print run. Check mode can
also be utilized with Wait with Proof mode, which is described below.

Wait with Proof Mode

Essentially an extension of the Wait mode, Wait with Proof enables users to
generate a proof set of multiple set jobs before printing the entire print run.

2-in-1 Mode

The 2-in1 Mode automatically places two 8.5x11 images on one single-sided
11x17 page. The images are ordered sequentially from left to right

Booklet Mode

Images are sent to memory in 8.5 x11 format and are printed onto 11x17. The
images are automatically organized so that when the job is completed, the 11x17
can be folded and a booklet is formed. The signature booklet is created with the
pages printed 4-in-1 (four 8.5x11 images on one 11x17). The pages are ordered
in ascending order.

Letterhead Mode

In letterhead mode, a printed cover sheet is inserted as the first page in a document.
Letterhead pages can be inserted from any of the Konica 7065s paper sources.

Front and Back Covers

With this feature, printed front and back covers are automatically inserted as the
first and last pages in a document. Cover sheets can be inserted from any of the
Konica 7065s paper sources.

Separator Page

This feature automatically places a blank page at the end of each set exiting into the
finisher. Separator pages can be inserted from any of the Konica 7065s paper sources.

Watermark

The Watermark feature enables users to overlay their printed text over a userdefined word or words that appear in the background of the page. Sample watermark text includes CONFIDENTIAL, COPY, or DRAFT. Users can select from pre-programmed watermarks or create their own watermark text and adjust the angle on
the page.

IP-303 CLOSES SALES FOR YOU!
These features are just a few examples of the technology being developed to help users create the strategic
print initiatives that businesses will require to
improve the way they produce, distribute and share
information. The IP-303 is designed for both performance and flexibility. Most importantly, the modular
software design allows for an upgrade path, allowing
users to leverage the latest technology available to
increase the efficiency of document production and
distribution.
Digital products can have a profound effect on your
business process. However, the controller technology
used can make the difference between achieving the
status quo or truly revolutionizing the way you work.
With the creation of the IP-303 controller, you a
Konica Sales Representatives have more exciting
products than ever to sell. The IP-303 is the fifth generation controller created by Konicas System
Technology Center (KSTC), in Huntington Beach,
California.

Although the IP-201 and IP-301 are based on open

architecture, each controller is designed for a specific
engine. This made it difficult to connect future
engines and add new capabilities to existing engines.
Whenever we added a new capability or a new print
engine, significant software design changes were
required. Not anymore!

KSTC produces the IP controller for the U.S. market,

Mexico, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Japan and
Australia and enables us to come to market with the
IP-303 faster than any previous controller. KSTC
designed the ultimate controller platform to take
Konica into the next millennium!

New Open Architecture

The IP-303 is set on a brand new architecture that

delivers leading edge technology and a modular
design. Our goal with the IP-303 product is to take
Konicas high-end digital products and
DistribuTech imaging architecture (a.k.a.
Distributed Document Production Architecture) into
centralized reproduction departments and high-end
printing environments.

The New Open Architecture (NOA) was developed

utilizing the VxWorks embedded real time multitasking operating system. Many people describe the
VxWorks operating systems one of the most flexible,
scaleable and efficient operating systems available
today. Developed by Wind River Systems, VxWorks
allows us to develop a modular architecture. Konicas
IP structure contains five modules.

How It Works
The four cornerstone benefits of the IP-303 versus
the IP-301/201 include:

New Open Architecture - Real-time multitasking

operating system

Faster job processing and system throughput

These modules include:

1. IOC (input output control) module
2. Interpreter module
3. FBC (frame buffer control) module
4. PED (print engine driver) module
5. System database

RAM/hard drive-based spooling

Intelligent print job manager

The benefit to this module-based approach is its flexibility. Now when we want to add a new capability,
such as tandem printing, we can just add a new
module. Simply put, the NOA and VxWorks environment make it easier and faster for Konica to bring
products to market. The layered functionality of

One of the most important things you need to

understand as a salesperson is the significant difference between the current architecture of the IP201/301 and the IP-303.
21

PRODUCT
NOA allows us to change only the PED when the
machine interface changes. This will shorten our
time to market for future connected engines.
Faster Job Processing
The IP-303 is designed for faster job processing. The
combination of Konicas NOA and Intels 333MHz
processor provides you with the ultimate fusion of
multitasking. Many competitors can claim that they
have multitasking capability by just offering their
controller on an Intel MMX system, but few can
boast of an integration of NOA and 333 MHz technology! Only Konica brings this innovative combination of job processing power to our customers.

Added Features.

addition to variable data (available soon)

Konicas custom-developed CIC card controls the

communication between the IP-303 and the Konica
7065. The CIC acts as a bridge between the video
interface card in the Konica 7065 printer and the IP303 motherboard. The CIC board utilizes a
Motorola 68331 CPU with custom logic and software for communicating with and controlling the
Konica 7065 printer. This separate processing function offloads the machine control and communications functions, allowing the main CPU to allocate
all of its resources for rasterization. The CIC card is
even field upgradeable via floppy disk! The CIC technology eliminates the delay normally associated with
data flow and data management between the printer/copier and the controller.

Intelligent Print Job Management System A Konica Exclusive

Konica has implemented a new way to process your
customers print jobs. The IP-303 has combined the
current RAM-based job spooling with hard drivebased spooling. At this time, we are the only company in this industry that uses both RAM-based and
hard drive-based job processing technology.
What does this mean to your customer?
This new processing strategy does not eliminate job
spooling by your operating system. Instead, it
increases the number of jobs that can be spooled at
one time. With the use of the IPs hard drive, weve
essentially transferred the power of the IP to your
customers desktop.

Simply put...If you dont have the IP-303 & CIC

technology, you have data flow malaise!
NOA Module Terms

Now, with our unique job spooling technology,

more jobs can be sent and spooled than ever before.
(You can even shut this spooling off if your customer
doesnt want to spool jobs to the hard drive.) This
new way of processing jobs is also enhanced by our
new Intelligent Print Job Management technology
and job mirror capability.
Additional Benefits of the Intelligent Print Job
Manager:

Job Recovery.
All jobs are mirrored to the IP-303s hard drive.
This ensures document integrity during engine
malfunctions (available soon)

CIC Technology Advantages

The NOA software allows the IP-303 to handle system management issues and printing commands
simultaneously. That means more job processing
power from the desktop.

Reduces the load on the network file server.

IP-303 PRINT SPECIFICATIONS

Here are the memory upgrade modules KBT is

currently selling:

Memory Specifications
The IP-303s memory is used for RIPing (Rasterize
Image Processing) and for system operation. The
standard memory configuration for the IP-303 is
32 MB. Memory can be upgraded in 16, 32, 64 or

How Do The Print Drivers Work?

The Konica 7065s print drivers are loaded on your
customers PC during or after the Konica 7065 installation. Users then access the print drivers through
their application software packages (e.g., Microsoft
Word). When printing, the drivers enable paper
source, paper size, special feature and print quantity
selections.
Konica has developed both PCL and PostScript drivers for use with the Konica 7065. Both PCL and
24

HOME
PRODUCT
PostScript are similar in that they tell printers how
to handle text and data formatting when creating
pages. In simple terms, they convert bits and bytes
into documents. Remember that Konica also has
high-end printing solutions to allow your customers
who operate in the UNIX or AS/400 market to output to Konica printers. We also have printing solutions for the Macintosh and DOS markets.
PCL - Developed by Hewlett-Packard (HP), PCL
stands for Printer Control Language. Due to the large
installed base of HP printers, PCL is the standard in
most businesses. The Konica 7065 supports PCL version 5e.
PostScript - Developed by Adobe Systems Inc.,
PostScript is the standard in Macintosh environments and, due to its ability to handle graphics, is
popular in any environment where photo and graphic printing is a requirement. The Konica 7065 supports both PostScript level 1 and level 2.

Konica is in the process of developing additional drivers for the future. These drivers include:

HIGH END Printing Markets UNIX (PostScript UNIX Only)

The IP is well-positioned to attack the very lucrative
UNIX environment because of Konicas new UNIX
print utilities.

Konica has developed drivers for the following operating systems:

Available Drivers

Available Drivers

Just because a driver is not available for a given operating system, does not mean that the 7065 is incompatible. Drivers for other printers may work correctly
with the 7065 but will exclude access to its special
features. If the operating system in question has a
configurable driver it may be programmed to support the 7065s special features.

For example, a user with a Windows 3.1 PC running

Microsoft Office will use the same print driver for
Word, Excel and PowerPoint. However, a user running Microsoft Word and Excel on a Macintosh system requires a driver that is different from the
Windows 3.1 driver.

Operating System

Operating System

What is UNIX?
As defined by the Tech Web site on the Internet,
UNIX is a multi-user, multi-tasking operating system that is widely used as the master control program in workstations and servers. UNIX is written in
C, and both UNIX and C were developed by ATT and
freely distributed to government and academic institutions, causing it to be ported to a wider variety of
machine families than any other operating system.
As a result, UNIX became synonymous with open
systems.
What Utilities are available?
There are eight different types of UNIX currently
available on the market, and Konica can support five
of them with our new UNIX Print Utility.

Sun Microsystems Solaris Driver

UNIX is holding its own at their customer sites.

Specifically, UNIX was the primary operating system
at more than half of the respondents installations in
1997. ...85 percent of respondents endorse UNIX
as a long-term enterprise strategy for their customers.

This driver provides Command line capabilities for

PostScript and ASCII. It is compatible for Sun
Microsystems Solaris x86 or SPARC stations. We
even provided this driver to the Sun Microsystems
Solaris Engineering team. They have been ecstatic
about the capability of our Solaris driver. In fact,
they actually use our driver for their main in-house
printing solution. What a great testimonial to share
with your customers!

How Will Konicas Print Utility Help?

While UNIX is not a very complex operating system,
it is difficult to print finished documents (completed
sets) from that environment. To print finished documents, a programmer would need to input a programming code line specifically for every job needed
to print. This is a very time-consuming process. Even
more bothersome for the system administrator is
printing several reports on a weekly, monthly or
yearly basis and trying to remember which client
wants what report and in what style (duplexed, stapled, etc.). These frustrations simply go away with
Konicas LP File Filter (Print Utility).

Other UNIX Drivers DEC, SCO, HP-UX and AIX

The other UNIX drivers also function with a command line utility like the Sun Solaris Driver. Now
you can provide more solutions to your customers in
the following environments: DEC, SCO, HP-UX
and AIX.
What about UNIX Unification?
According to Tech Web, there have been several
attempts at unifying UNIX into a single standard.
Because UNIX runs on so many different hardware
platforms, it is very difficult to get one program to
run all of them. What most UNIX application engineers want is a single programming interface (API).
This will allow the programmers to recompile the
source code for each platform only. If they had this
type of interface they would not need to maintain
different versions of source code.

How Does it Work?

Roughly 90 percent of UNIX is PostScript or ASCII.
When a user wants to print from the UNIX environment, it is performed from an LP Command line.
Konica can currently take a raw UNIX PostScript job
and print it out. What is now unique is the capability
of instructing the print job, via a Pop-up Utility to
add the finishing commands that most of you are
familiar with from the Windows environment.

Why is UNIX Important?

UNIX was widely distributed and accepted in its
early days. This, matched with the ease of implementation, has made UNIX one of the most popular languages for mission critical applications. UNIX components have become world industry standards for
the computer industry. For example, TCP/IP
(Transport Protocol) and SMTP (E-mail protocol)
internet standards both come directly from UNIX.

The benefit to the system administrator is the ability

to add these finishing commands without all of the
complex code additions that are necessary to currently complete this type of job in a UNIX environment.
Another benefit of our print utility is that you can
save your job settings. Now your customers can perform their jobs easier than ever before! No need for
extra programming code, no need to remember job
settings. Konica has eliminated the barriers to the
very lucrative UNIX printing market.

In an article focussing on the UNIX market, Var

Business Online indicated that UNIX is stronger than
ever and more entrenched in the channel and corporate America than ever before. Var Business surveyed
250 VARs and discovered that 88% of UNIX VARs say

The spring of 1999 saw

the first new digital offerings from Canon with
the introduction of the
imageRUNNER 330/400

product line. They are
attempting to make up
for lost time with aggressive sales efforts and marketing campaigns. Look for
a multi-million dollar ad campaign in the 2nd half

the new digital office. In addition, they have signed
PGA Tour professional Davis Love III to a lucrative

Weaknesses
The Canon Image Runner 600 lacks true concurrency. Users must identify which memory partition

4,150 with optional 3,500 LCT (7,650 total most
of all digital machines); stackless duplex; will handle 110 lb. index.

Output Options: Offset catch tray with multi-position stapling of 50 sheets; Upscale version (available 3Q99?) will hole punch, booklet making
with saddle stitch of 11x17 documents, Z-folding
and an optional post-process insert tray.

For copier productivity tests ran average due to the

55 ppm scan rate. The Better Buys for Business single-doubled sided tests showed 58% (4 set test)
and 87% (20 set test). Betters Buys for Business
even said that the imageRUNNER 600 is not one
of the leading performers

Document feeder may hold 100 pages but cannot

scan in more than the 100 page original document
(Konica holds as much as ERDH memory allows
up to 1,500 pages).

Copier productivity tests were average (compared

to Konica 7060)

The ImageRUNNER600 has been delayed in its

release for over a year for some reason, so there
may be initial growing pains with this new connected product. (Konica is on its forth generation
print controller and has been successfully connecting 50-60 ppm digital copier printers since 1995)

Xerox Document Centre 265DC

As I am sure you are aware, the Document Centre
265DC is an extremely viable competitor due to
Xerox reputation in the office production environment. In this competitive section we will only scratch
the surface of the comparison between the Konica
7065 and the 265DC. For more detailed information, be sure to review a copy of the competitive

KONICA ADVANTAGE

For network printing, use the EFI based controller

($4,950 US) which includes PCL5e, PS3 and
Ethernet. Controller offers electronic mailboxes
allowing jobs sent to the machine and a PIN code
is entered at the machine for the job to be outputted.

sources with paper sizes up to 12x18. These

models can handle 110 lb. index from four of the
paper sources as well as the ability to duplex this
paper type.

Since the long awaited

introduction of the print
controller in the Spring of this year (a year and a half
after initial standalone introduction), the Xerox
product line now has connected systems in both the
copier and printer environments targeting different
markets and applications. This new connected availability does not the hide the severe deficits that this
product has to our new Konica 7065 workgroup document system.

There is a Sixth Sense remote diagnostics that

allows technicians to dial into devices and service
remotely. This gives the advantage of increased
uptime; however, with all these service improvements the savings are not passed onto the customer.
The DC265 offers modularity in its configurations.
Start off as a copier and add printing later or start
as a printer (DC265 only) and add copying later
or as both copier/printer. Network scanning is
expected in 99 and network faxing may also be
available.

The DC265 offers concurrency with the ability to

scan ahead multiple jobs (subject to the capacity
of the 1.2 GB hard disk) while the engine is busy
printing as well as the ability to interrupt a job
between sets to make a copy job.

In the Better Buys for Business productivity tests,

the DC255 single to duplex 20 set test showed an
impressive 98% (54 ppm); however, the DC265
on the same test showed 83% (54 ppm exactly as
the DC255!).

The finisher has a 2,000-sheet capacity with 50sheet multi-position stapling.

Xerox CentreWare: benefits desktop and walkup

users; walkup users can view job status and job
queue information; desktop users can view details
of both copy and print jobs waiting in line where
they can promote, hold or delete their own jobs;
ability to provide information on other printing
devices including job queues and job status information (i.e., HP printers using HP JetDirect interfaces).

Strengths
Modularity in products.

Features
Machines come with only 250 replaceable parts.
User replaceable parts include: imaging module
(includes drum), fuser module, paper feed rollers
and staple cartridge.

User replaceable parts (but do customers want to

replace parts when most do not want to even
change toner?)

Sixth Sense remote diagnostics (but are the savings passed onto the customer?)

Offers concurrency - ability to scan ahead multiple

document feeder and platen glass (Konica has this
ability with Image Insert).

Electronic mailboxes for secure printing (Konica

will launch secure print capability in second half
of 1999).

CentreWare network print management software

(has been Xeroxs main strength, but that advantage has been met with Konicas web utility printer
management software).

Weaknesses
Why did it take over two years for Xerox to develop the print controller?

Offers the build job feature that combines

images scanned from the document feeder and
platen glass into a single job.
In terms of resolution, originals are scanned at
400 x 600 dpi and output at 600 dpi with an
option of an interpolated resolution of 1,800 dpi.
The paper capacities are 5,300 sheets from five

Print engine uses standard 12 MB memory plus

1.7 GB hard drive for copy applications and image
storage (i.e., archive file).

Why is it so expensive for me to change the modules?

Finisher capacity of 3,000 sheets with multi-position stapling and 3-hole punch. Also offers an
optional 9-bin mailbox for job separation.

Why will the Total Satisfaction Guarantee become

There is concurrency, the ability to scan in a copy

Why is the half-tone image so poor?

Also offers tandem copying which Ricoh calls

Why is the price so high?

No stapling on legal paper.

The duplex speed of the DC265 is 54 ppm, the

same as DC255. (Konica outperforms Xerox in all
productivity tests!)

Copier Productivity: The Aficio 650 scans originals

at 50 ppm. The Aficio 650 single to duplex tests
from Better Buys for Business showed a performance of 62% on the 4 set test and 85% on the 20
set test. Interestingly, on the 20 set test, stapling
added 61 seconds to the job!

Paper capacity of only 5,300 sheets (Konica

7150/7060 handle 7,100 sheet paper capacity).

100 MHz Power PC 603e processor (Konica uses a

333 MHz processor).

More expensive.

Better Buys for Business summed up the product

as ... Impressive digital duo, priced very aggressively. The sheer values compensate for some
minor productivity concerns, though the jury is
still out pending the release of connectivity.

Tandem copying.

The latest digital

machines available from
Ricoh possess a great
deal of improvements
over their earlier versions, including stackless duplexing and 100
sheet document feeder.
Ricoh has a history of being very aggressive in terms
of pricing and these Aficio models are no exception. Despite the 5% price increase that they levied
on all products earlier this year, they are still a formidable foe in terms of pricing.

Weaknesses
In Ricohs sales and marketing guide for the Aficio
650 the company states that Konica has remained
unchallenged...they are comfortably ensconced in
the number one position in the segment 4 digital
market. Your mission is to make them uncomfortable.
