Mathematics
Students will think
of ways to
incorporate
numbers and
operations into a
soundscape. For
example, when they
want to put in
addition, they can
make the sounds
get louder, and for
subtraction, they
can make the
sounds get quieter.
Student Standard:

creating or using a

objects such as
visualizations,
models, or
simulations.

1. Number Sense,
Properties, and
Operations

2. Patterns, Functions,
and Algebraic
Structures

Teachers will
create a sample
soundscape
focused around
patterns for the
students to hear
and understand
what is expected
first hand.
Teachers will
create patterns of
different noises in
the soundscape to
show the
students.
Teacher Standard:

Students will use their

creativity and
knowledge of math and
technology to create this
soundscape. They may
have to do a little
research on sounds
pertaining to math,
because I myself could
not think of many.

Students will work

on this outside of
the classroom and if
they have
questions, we will
address those in
class or on the class
webpage.

Teachers will post

their soundscape to
the class webpage,
as will the students
when they complete
theirs. Teachers will
be able to view the
soundscapes
whenever and will
be able to provide
feedback instantly
to each student.

2. Reading for All

Purposes

Teachers will
create a
soundscape to
demonstrate how
the students
should go about
it. This will ensure
that the students
are paying
attention to the
way the project is
being presented
because it is
being shown to
them first hand
instead of just
being talked
about.
Teacher Standard:

information and

to students,
parents, and
peers using a
variety of digital
age media and
formats.

Students will have

access to the
teachers
soundscape at all
times to use as a
guide throughout
the project.

3. Writing and
Composition

Students will write a

story based on an
experience that
they have had that
brought them a
certain emotion. It
can be any type of
story, then they will
pick apart the story
and dig for the
sounds that were
going on in the
background. These
sounds could
include dogs
barking, a certain
song, their mom
saying she loves
them. They will take
those sounds and
put them into a
soundscape to
share with the class.

Students will use their

knowledge of
technology to create this
soundscape and then
upload it to YouTube or
iTunes.

Teachers will be able

to listen and provide
instant feedback to
the students
through the
comments below
the YouTube video or
on the webpage
where the students
will upload their
iTunes song.

Students will be
able to work on this
out of class for the
majority of the
project. It may also
help to go back to
the place where the
story took place, to
draw back some of
the memories.

Social Studies
1. History

Students will
conduct research on
a war of their
interest and put that
information to use
in a soundscape.
They will be allowed
to watch YouTube
videos about the
war to gain more
knowledge on the
sounds that were
involved, but will
have to be sure to

Students will take the

know to pick out a war
that they find to be the
most interesting or think
that it is one that had a
major impact on our
country.

in class at certain
times, but much of
it can be done at
home.

2. Geography

Teacher will create

a sample
soundscape of a
place somewhere
in the world. Be
sure to dig deep
to pull out all of
the sounds that
could be heard in
this place, so the
students can get a
grasp on what is
expected.

times. The teacher
could post it onto
the classroom
webpage and
students can refer
to it, and ask
questions in the
comments section.
This way, teachers
will be able to save
class time with
answering questions
and be able to
address them as
soon as possible.

1. Physical Science

Students will create
a soundscape that
includes the noises
that come from
animals and their
environment. For
example, if they
chose a wolf they
would have howling
noises along with
some rustling of the
grass where the
wolves run.

Students will use their

background knowledge
in both science as well
as technology to create
this soundscape, but will
also have to do a little

more sounds that are in
the environment of the
animal of their choosing.

Teachers will be able

to provide instant
feedback to the
students and may
even be able to
create a mash-up of
all the students
soundscapes
combined.

Students will be
able to work on this
a little bit in class,
but the majority of
the project should
be completed at
home. They could

type of environment
their animal would
be found in to listen
to the surrounding

Other
Reflection: I think that soundscapes are a great way for students to think about the noises that are actually involved in activities
and memories that the students hold dear. This will really push them to think outside the box and get their creative juices flowing,
especially when it comes to making one up for math, as I myself struggled with that. I think that it will be good for them, though,
because it is encouraging them to find the little parts of their stories that make the story so great; like the song that was playing
in the background when they got their first puppy. There are so many little sounds that are always playing in the background of
our lives that we take for granted, and I think that this activity could really get kids thinking about those sounds and they may
begin to appreciate the little things a bit more.
