Evidence

Students will be able to list how many inner and outer

planets make up the solar system accurately in a given
scenario.
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to
differentiate between inner and outer planets.
Students will compare inner and out planets (DOK-Level
2)
Students will show understanding of their knowledge on
types of planets in the solar system by creating
flashcards at the conclusion of the lesson.

, Modifications

1a: Articulate and set personal learning goals, develop

strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and
reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning
outcomes.
1b: Students build networks and customize their
learning environments in ways that support the learning
process.
Student A has a visual impairment. Student may sit at
the front on the class to watch videos. Pictures used will
be larger so student has less difficulty viewing them.
Circles drawn for venn diagram will be larger and be in
black marker. All text written inside will also be written
in dark ink.

planets in the solar system. The students will know how many
plants exist, and the names of those planets. The students will
begin to learn the separation of the eight planets, and
understand what category they fall into. The lesson below
allows students to grasp these concepts while implementing PA
standards.

Introduction

Activating Prior Knowledge

Ask students if they know how many planets make up
the solar system.
Ask students if they know the two categories the planets
are divided into.
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
The instructor is going to engage the students in the
lesson by playing a Youtube video by Erin Beckman titled
Inner and Outer Planets.

Big Idea Statement

Our solar system contains many planets which can be
classified in different ways.
Essential Questions Statement
What planets are considered inner planets?
What planets are considered outer planets?
Objective Statement
Students will list the inner planets that exist in the solar
system,
Students will list the outer planets that exist in the solar
system.
Transition
At the conclusion of the video, students will work in small
groups and separate pictures of the planets into two
columns. Column one will represent the inner planets,
and column two will represent the outer planets.

Lesson
Procedure

PreAssessment of Students
During a teacher initiated group discussion students will
demonstrate any prior knowledge they have on planets
in the solar system.
Modeling of the Concept
Instructor will draw a Venn Diagram on the board and
title one side as inner planets, and the other as outer
planets. Students must work as a group and instruct the
teacher what to write in each segment of the diagram.
Guiding the Practice
Teacher will ask students questions on their classification
decisions.
Teacher will read the diagram back to the students to
make sure they understand what was put.
Providing the Independent Practice
Students will fill in a diagram of the solar system by
writing in the name of the planet, and whether it is
considered an inner or outer planet to demonstrate
comprehension on lesson.
Transition
Before students transition from this subject to another,
instructor will go around the room and ask each student
to name a property of an inner or outer planet, or just
name an inner or an outer planet.

Summary & Review of the Learning

Students will complete a diagram of the solar system to
demonstrate what they learned on inner and outer
planets
Students will talk with the teacher independently on
inner and outer planets to explain their knowledge.
Students will talk with the teacher independently on
what they liked and disliked about the lesson.
Homework/Assignments
Each student will pick a planet in the solar system and do
a report in front of the class. The report must be 3-5
sentences in length. After student is done presenting the
class must decide what planet that child is, and if it is an
inner or outer planet.

Students wouldve benefited more if the properties of

each planet were discussed/embellished on in greater
detail.
Students would benefit if the duration of the plan was
longer.
Students with disabilities were equally involved in the
activities.
