EDITORIAL

Experiment with your spaces!

You dont need to feel hemmed in by cramped areas
in your home. Get help from a stylist or designer and
create more free-flowing spaces by knocking down
a wall, reusing a wasted space. In our refurbishing
projects, we bring a three-room students apartment in
Italy, which was given a makeover by the owner when
she decided to live in it years later as a professional,
changing it around into a spacious and extremely
functional apartment. Meanwhile, an unused cellar
gets a new lease of life as a gym.
We also feature a bungalow in Bhubaneshwar, Orissa,
which uses interesting textures across the walls and
floors, using neutral accents, which are then played
off with bright accessories and artwork. Its a lesson in
how a non-fussy decor can have immense appeal.
We spoke to Pakistani artists Aisha Khalid and Imran Qureshi, a couple whose art seeps into
the modern narrative, absorbing and reflecting events that shook the world, like the terror
attacks in Pakistan. In a touching imagery, Aishas flowers on canvas took on a grey hue after
she heard news of the attack in Peshawar, which claimed the lives of several schoolchildren.
So, be inspired and get creative!

THE HOUSE OF THE MONTH

A young Italian architects home is
transformed from a cramped student
apartment into a spacious and bright habitat,
with separate living and sleeping areas.

THE HOUSE OF THE MONTH

before and after

Black and white geometrical patterns

AN OPTICAL PLAY

Converting a three-room student apartment into the haven of a

young architect, Federica has transformed her home, making it
functional and bright, and then customised it with the help of a stylist.
Project by Federica Cattaneo, Styling by Vanessa Pisk, Photos by Giandomenico Frassi, Text by Elena Favetti

A QUESTION OF CURVES
The relaxation area is designed with circular
elements, which gives an effect of the room
being in constant motion. This is in contrast to
the dining area, which on the contrary, is covered
with a mix of black-on-white stripes. Above, can
be seen the Zoe carpet (Paola Lenti), Leaf chair
in steel rod by Arper and ceramic tables, T-Table
by Bosa and double-top Secreto from Col.
24 CASAVIVA AUGUST 15

PASSIONS IN VIEW
Heres what those who enter
the house see. The first
impact must be striking and
speak of those who live there.
Federica and Vanessa totally
agree on this, which is the
reason why they thought of
hanging on the bottom wall
some paintings made by the
hostess, including a 3D-effect
sculpture, which appear to
be in perfect balance with
the shelves full of books and
small, fun dcor objects.

AUGUST 15 CASAVIVA 25

THE HOUSE OF THE MONTH

ederica proposed her own

very special assignment,
which
involved
the
transformation of a three-room
students apartment into a
bright customised apartment,
for herself (yes, because it is
her home)! At the end, the
result was functional, but there
was something missing. So
she called our stylist Vanessa,
who tiptoed gracefully into the
home, redefining it without
any impositions or distortions.
Together, they had great ideas.
Here they are!

FEDERICA CATTANEO, MILAN

www.matcastudio.comcom
A 60sqm, two-room apartment with a
large living room and a kitchen, plus room
and bathroom with laundry area.

NO LONGER A MINI ROOM

The space is now part of a large living
room. Earlier, when you walked into the
home, you could see a corridor leading
to the living room with a kitchenette
and the bedroom. After the demolition
of all the walls, there is now one living
room with the kitchen partially in view.
Everything is more harmonious and the
spaces are exploited to the fullest.

SOLUTIONS BY SURPRISE
On one side of the entry
door is a wall wardrobe with
powder pink doors and, on the
other side, a kitchen partially
hidden by an L-shaped wall.
26 CASAVIVA AUGUST 15

PLAYING WITH CONTRASTS

In order to give character to
the complete white sofa with
soft shapes, cushions with
geometric designs in white,
black, grey and pink, which
recalls the doors of the small
closet, have been chosen.
The Ektorp sofa from Ikea can
be seen. The pillows, starting
from the left, in fabric designed
by Charles and Ray Eames
from Vitra, in pied de poule
from Poemo Design, optical
from Larsen, white and pale
pink from Ferm Living are also
visible. The Cut chair and Kipu
pouffe from La Palma, Nomad
floor lamp from Rubn and Tiuku
clock from Covo are also seen.

AUGUST 15 CASAVIVA 27

THE HOUSE OF THE MONTH

he kitchen, which was earlier a micro cooking area,

offers a relaxed work environment, thanks to Federicas
project. In order to make the most of the space, it has
been organised in two fronts. Along the wall, there are the
refrigerator-oven-pantry columns, and the peninsular area is
the operational area. The total white gives more brightness to
this area without the need for direct lighting.

DESIGN CHOICES FOR THE KITCHEN

Here, Vanessa wanted to divide the operating
area from the rest of the living space with
minimal accessories. On the work table is
a steel pot and Territoire sand pentagonal
tray from Alessi, Sule terracotta pitcher and
Muselet cherry red basket from Incipit. Also
seen are the yellow teapot Bulky from Muuto
and rag from Le Jacquard Franais, besides
the Fortebraccio lamp from Luceplan. On the
ground, is a Honey carpet by Pappelina, Kuf
table from Diamantini & Domeniconi and fruit
bowl from Coincasa.

EARLIER

THE ENTRANCE IS TRANSFORMED

Instead of the unused corridor, there is now a
small but well-organised kitchen, overlooking
the living room. To hide it, an L-wing (120 cm
in height) has been created.

28 CASAVIVA AUGUST 15

BLACK & WHITE + MINT

On the table, articles of
easy-chic combinations
can be seen. Fruit bowls
and green plates from
Guzzini; dessert plates,
decorated plates, carafe
and porcelain glasses
by Isi Milano; cutlery and
goblets from Bitossi Home
are some of them. The
Lugo tablecloth from
Internoitaliano, napkins
from Zucchi and a tray
from Hay can also be seen.

CARVING OUT SPACE

An unused wall is now at the centre of the
home. Earlier, this wall simply divided the
rooms. Now, it not only performs this function,
but also houses the kitchen and a vintage
bookshelf, between the two doors.

LUNCH WITH FRIENDS

Set up in the main
colours and mood of the
home, the table is always
ready to welcome friends.

On completion of the

SOULFUL NOOKS
From a soulless room, its now a tailormade

The effect was a bit impersonal, but it was

It was a typical

badly exploited. When
Federica purchased
it, she transformed

DESIGNER SPACES

ity living has its benefits, but relocating to an outof-town retreat means a full-time holiday feeling,
even with a demanding business to run. Its a
move that husbands Kobus Loots and Greg Shaw
made over a decade ago, and the lure of urban living hasnt
swayed them since. Film editors with a company based
in Cape Towns CBD and an apartment on the crammed
Atlantic seaboard, the couple started building a weekend
house in Misty Cliffs in 2000. Shortly after, they felt a pull
to move their home from the hum of Cape Town to this
more secluded spot. A 45-minute drive to the city centre,
Misty Cliffs provided a relaxed living environment, but
with a reasonable commute. While the house started off as
a holiday home, Kobus and Greg soon saw the potential to
create their ideal living space and something bigger than
just a little house with a sea view. I saw a picture of an
Australian house clad in wood with a modern architectural
aesthetic, says Kobus, who explains how they wanted the
look of a contemporary timber-frame house.

We wanted a mix of older

elements and something
more modern.

Greg Shaw (back) and Kobus Loots (front) with their

Airedaile terriers and macaw Coco. Meanwhile, the allwhite stairwell that connects the original home with the
newer bunker provides a gallery space for the horse head,
from Weylandts, which rests on an art block.
40 CASAVIVA AUGUST 15

An unconventional twist
I would describe our space as a wooden shack by the sea, with
a spin on the traditional, says Greg. Our brief to the architect
was a beach home with a difference. But while we may have
wanted it to look extraordinary, it needed to be a real home,
where real people live. The couples log cabin, as Greg
describes it, has become something much roomier than they
first conceptualised. You get so wrapped up in the process that
before you know it, its much larger than you ever imagined,
says Greg. The property, which stands on a 600m2-sized plot,
was extended 10 years later. A glass bird aviary, 20 metres high,
was used as the structure to connect the original home with
the new living area. We didnt want to do more of the same,
says Kobus of the build. We wanted to create a mix of older
elements with something more modern, otherwise things would
be too bland, he explains. Gregs love for birds has injected
a real sense of honouring the natural beauty of the location.
Im crazy about nature, and the aviary was the only way to
make me feel like we lived in the heart of it, he says. I like the
exotic, and what could be more exotic than a pink scarlet ibis
and toco toucans essentially living in your home?

The artwork was bought from a gallery on Cape Towns

Waterfront, only later to discover it was painted by
our neighbour, artist Johan Scott, says Kobus. The
masculine hued eggplant swivel chair is from Weylandts.

Maximizing sea views,

the couple created a

joke is simply garden
furniture. A Morso

DESIGNER SPACES

We always buy perceived

kitsch on holiday and nd space
for them somewhere.

A constantly evolving
treasured space
An example of his favourite investment
pieces is the South American mint-green
doors in the bunkers living room, a purchase
that Kobus made before the section was even
built. I believe that if you buy things you
like, everything will sit together, he says.
The couples overseas finds, bought while
travelling, have been added to the mix.
We always buy perceived kitsch things on
holiday and find space for them somewhere,
says Greg, pointing to the cheery, brightly
painted artwork of a Zanzibar village. More
muted pieces include a marble chessboard
bought in India (made from the same marble
as the TajMahal) and a modern rectangular
glass lamp found in New York City that
sits on the living rooms low coffee table. Set
against a textured white well, the painting
bought from a street artist in Stone Town,
Zanzibar, breaks up the living rooms clean
inner shell. Treasured pieces do, however,
have a lifespan in the Shaw-Loots house. We
always want to shake things up, says Greg.
Kobus loves the evolution of the space, like
its a big fun game.

46 CASAVIVA AUGUST 15

DESIGNER SPACES

The main bedrooms low level

bed, made by Deck One,
mimics the earthy-toned
ottoman from Cape Towns
Klooftique, giving the space
a natural-toned aesthetic.
Inspired by the shades of the
Cape Peninsulas surrounding
vegetation, the couple used
Balau wood for their rustic ensuite bathroom. Unexpected
design elements are interesting
and a simple wooden box
turned into a bath transforms
a drearily functional guest
washroom into something
stylish. Balau wood, white
metro tiles, copper pipes and
artwork from Londons V&A
Museum create an unfussy
and functional wet room.

A pragmatic relationship
Kobus remarks, Your home will never be finished because you always
carry on throwing out and adding to it. Take the masculine Eames chair
once the couples pride and joythats slowly been worked out of the space
and now sold. With a tribe of Airedale terriers and a pet macaw parrot,
accepting that the interior fixtures and furniture will become weathered
means a pragmatic detachment from material items. Coco, the parrot,
loved chewing it, muses Greg. The buyer was horrified that we allowed an
original Eames lounge chair and ottoman to be eaten by a parrot.
AUGUST 15 CASAVIVA 47

DESIGNER SPACES

An extension of nature
The landscape of the Cape Peninsula dominates, so
the garden needed to become an extension of the
rugged surrounds and, in essence, art. In our house,
paintings arent necessary because were surrounded
by nature, says Kobus, explaining that when creating
the outdoor living area, the couple simply worked with
what was already there. We used the rocks from the
building site as cladding and as part of the concrete
deck that wraps around the house. For the garden,
the approach was simpletrial and error. In Misty
Cliffs, you plant whatever will grow, like fynbos and
olive trees. We spent a fortune on bulbs but lost them
all overnight to a hungry porcupine. While the garden
design was unintentional, elements like the swimming
pool were more carefully thought through. The dark
colour of the raised pool purposefully blends into the
mountains beyond, says Kobus. The outdoor living and
pool area has been given a leafy canopy of Erythrina
trees, creating shade for a set of table and chairs from
PlaisirdJardin in Constantia, Cape Town.

For the study, with its parquet floors, the couple

chose deep dove grey lounge pieces to pick
up on the cement doorway. The couple has
purposely planted Mediterranean-type plants to
blend with the natural vegetation.

The natural woodiness of one of the homes decks,
made from Balau wood, is broken up with splashes
of vivid orange thanks to chairs from PlaisirdJardin in
Constantia, Cape Town.

An inspired space
Natural-toned garden furniture adds to the
organic colour palette of the Cape sandstone
found on-site. Combining architectural styles
has translated into an intermingled interior.
While the couple has similar tastes that make for
complementary design (Greg loves minimalism
and Kobus is fond of Scandinavian chic), their
love of mixing things up is the antidote to what
could otherwise be an insipid space. While they
arent fond of clutter and ornamentationit
doesnt work because of the wind, says
Kobusthey arent fussy about eclectic dcor
with varied price tags. My philosophy is that
if you invest in three big pieces of value, then
its fine to add in other objects, like basics from
accessible retailers. An emerald green pendant
light by Tom Dixon from Crema greets guests as
they climb the stairs in the entrance hall.
Treasured South American doors are the
backdrop to Gregs desk (by Laurence Friedman
from Truly Fantastic) and a Jasper Morrison
chair for Vitra. The bay window by architect
Vanessa Sass was made with untreated Balau,
unpainted fibre cement boards and aluminum,
as per the aesthetic of modern Australian
architecture, says Kobus.

A view of the rugged Atlantic

coast can be savoured from all
living areas of the home.

A blend of two styles

Positioned in the very back row of Misty Cliff properties, the nature
reserve leading up to the mountain beyond, is literally part of Kobus and
Gregs backyard. For the new wing, the couple wanted a bunker by the
sea. Their reason was simplesunlight, or rather, too much of it. Living
next to the sea means you cant get away from the sun, so we wanted
a darker area to retreat to, says Kobus. And the final result is a case
of complement rather than clash. The two areas of our house blend,
and its the aviary that marries them; it literally joins the two houses and
styles. The 20-metre high aviary in the centre of the house is home to
Ashley and Trevor, the couples toco toucans.

and suspensions, involving the
glass ceiling, makes everything
functional and gives natural light
to the two new blind spaces.
The focus is just the cabin that
serves as the headboard. In this
room, with neutral tones, the
navy striped upholstery is a sharp
demarcation mitigated by the side
wall, in a darker solid colour.

with a transparent base and
textile lampshade from Flos.
The wallpaper from Farrow &

PROJECT

SIMPLY CLASSIC

This 6,000 sq ft bungalow in Bhubaneshwar, designed by

Manmeet Arora, Studio Drift, breathes sheer comfort.
Text by Shilpi Madan

he three-storeyed, spiffy bungalow

unfurls in a flowing yet cohesive
rendition of urban comfort, with clever
design and adroitly arranged spatial spaces
across all levels. Manmeet Arora took on
the interior decor project in her hometown,
Bhubaneshwar, taking care to mirror the
personalities of each of the five members of
the Batra family in different nooks and spaces.
White dominates the neutral colour palette
of the entire house, with flecks of teak and
walnut, and large rugs in shades of sand and
mocha bringing in the element of warmth.
Accents in textured jute wallpaper, marquetry
work, diffused lighting, onyx framework on
the walls and a splash of local Odishi artworks
in vivid colours add an extra visual dimension
as the spaces unravel in a single unifying
complexion. The ground floor accommodates
the parking section, gymnasium and the office
space. Moving up, the dining and living areas
stand arranged skilfully on the first floor, linked
through a staircase to the bedrooms above.
The living area brings in a visually expansive play of white Belgian marble
flooring, a lightly grooved wall behind the sofas, full length windows and
mirror-top table. Temple art sourced from local artists livens up this space.

72 CASAVIVA AUGUST 15

Metallic grey tiles, with an aluminium kadhai serving as a

washbasin, are lined with three inverted aluminium holding bulbs,
which function as the light source. The small breakfast counter in
the kitchen lends a sense of cosiness and informality.

Subtle style

Skillful inclusion of woody accents

and cohesive accessories bring a sense
of warmth into the decor.

The colour palette deepens as the living

area melts into the dining section. The
tufted rug with myriad, soft balls, black
chairs in the furniture and ringed bark
accessories are from an African store in
China. The cork sheathed wall at the back
marks a transition from the raw silk curtains
of the living area to the raven decor accents
in the dining space In the dining area, the
concept of double height is created visually
by bringing in wooden slats lining the
bedroom, a level above. The teak table and
wall, wishbone shaped chairs at the dining
table and white Belgian marble flooring
bring in a touch of classic chic. The sturdy
raven legs of the clean cut dining table
and the gigantic jet black spider shaped
chandelier with bare bulbs protruding bring
in robust strength in this area. The unusual
orange-stoned Jaisalmer bench forms a
clever visual separator between the living
and dining sections. Functional granite
worktop counters, ample storage in the
cabinets and interesting, tiny Spanish tiles
on the walls wrap up the practical decor.
The black Tom Dixon pendant lights add a
touch of contemporary style.
AUGUST 15 CASAVIVA 73

Into the den

The small den brings in
a cosy space to relax in.
The fixture, to the right,
suspended from the
ceiling carries a medley
of lightweight, colorful
photoframes for the
family members to fit their
photographs in. Local
Odishi art stands mounted
on the wall. The Floor Art
rug brings in slaty flush,
together with the snug
couch: a muted contrast
to the chartreuse cushion
covers. (Right)The unusual
trellis separator at the far
end of this section is an
unusual pick from Shanghai.
Crafted from the fibre of
a local Chinese plant, the
natural forest green trellis
stands spruced with a lick of
polish, lending a suave twist
to the decor. The separator
conceals the den from the
staircase landing area.

The informal lounge overlooking the dining area breathes in a rush of greys,
speckled with colours in artworks and a colourful overhanging installation.

The decor code sets the tone for urban

aesthetics conceived in a modern, yet
low-maintenance format.
74 CASAVIVA AUGUST 15

PROJECT

The most vibrant of the three

bedrooms for the three children,
this area comes alive through
a riot of hues in the abstract
paintings above the headboard
of the bed. Quiet white wallpaper
provides a perfect canvas to
the geometric play of light and
shadows through the light
fixtures, and the frittering coral
butterflies on the wall.

Classic contours
The other end of the bedroom brings in a simple, functional study area. The
standing lamp to the left glamorises the space through a vivacious amount of
bling, with only tomes and the television bringing in colour in this section of the
space. The windows stand concealed behind raw silk curtains. A view of the
wall in the tiny powder room on the first floor is seen. Intriguing wooden lines
frame textures in onynx and white Belgian marble in an astute arrangement, a
best of waste, crafted using leftover pieces. The rivetting effect is duplicated
through the presence of a mirror on the opposite wall, and ends up amplifying
the space visually. The backlit pristine jaali to the right lends a moorish touch.
AUGUST 15 CASAVIVA 75

PROJECT

Accesorise right
Manmeet Arora shares tips on how
to rev up a neutral palette.
Defining tones: Pick a defining
color element of the furniture,
using that to determine shades
in art work and accessories. For
instance, the Jaisalmer stone
bench inspired the orange and
mustard artwork used in the space.
Bright highlights: Liven up
the palette with a coloured rug.
Remember to use a colour you
love, and not one that is trending.
Colour play: Choose 2-3 colors,
depending on the size of the space
and stick to these shades whilst
choosing the art, accessories,
cushions and soft furnishings
Accessorise: Books make for
the best accessories, and add
immense character and color to an
otherwise muted palette.
The mini, concealed, onyx bar on the terrace is linked
to the master bedroom. The stylish treasure trove
stands complemented by a high chair duo.

Earthy palette
Marked visually by a leather clad partial separating wall, The
extension of the master bedroom stands dominated by a
black and white chequered rug, and deep green blinds, with
complementary strokes in the Odishi artwork on the wall. A
calm, open, restful space, perfect for sitting and reading a book
Masculine tones rule the sons bedroom, with minimal
spotlights and a zero fuss brick wall in the study area. On the
wall behind is a clever rendition of best of waste, with all the
leftover grooved white marble pieces and onyx bits arranged in
a bewitching arrangement. The globular lights are a whimsical
pick from a shop in China. The diagonal lines on the wooden
flooring are a deliberate, pleasing mismatch with the wooden
texture above, both in colour and linear configuration.

ART & DESIGN

We get acquainted with Pakistani
artists and couple Aisha Khalid
and Imran Qureshis works,
inspired by the terror attacks in
their country. Take a tour of a
boutique hotel in Switzerland by
designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard.

SPOTLIGHT

Inspired by

history

The landmark Chateau Gutsch in

Switzerland has been converted
into a boutique hotel by designer
Martyn Lawrence Bullard.

The wall coverings are the Darya Ikat Sidewall,

created by Martyn Lawrence Bullard; the ceiling detail
is in gold leaf; the chest is a 19th century French
Boule cabinet, while the paintings are part of the
castles original collection of 17th-19th century oils.
78 CASAVIVA AUGUST 15

pread across 50,000 sq ft, Chateau Gutsch, a famous

landmark in Switzerland, was built on the site of
an 18th century manor house and hunting lodge
in 1884. Converted into a world-class boutique hotel by
interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard for billionaire
business and media moguls Alexander Lebedev and
his son Evgeny Lebedev, it boasts panoramic views of
the city, the lake Lucerne and the famous mountains
that surround it. Bullard designed the castle with a
Gustavian-style palette that was popular in Switzerland
in the late 19th century. The style was inspired by the
mad king Ludwig IIs Bavarian fantasy castles and due
to its imposing scale, can be seen from every angle
from the beautiful city of Lucerne. Originally a vacation
destination for Queen Victoria, Lucerne is steeped in
history, which has also inspired the dcor.
In places, the 19th century panelling was stripped of
years of paint and given a distressed, waxed and painted
finish that looks original. Bullard added a Swiss-style
fireplace as the original had been replaced with a radiator
and embraced original Swiss art depicting bucolic scenes
to retain the innate historic values of this room.

An imposing
design ethos

The grand entrance is covered in

paper-backed fabrics added to
the original panelling in an 18th
century Swiss document fabric
that Schumacher reproduced
for Bullard in a local 100-yearold Swiss fabric mill. For the
ancestor bar, named by him due
to grouping of all the historic oil
paintings of Swiss nobles from
the castles original collection
together in this space, has
breathtaking panoramic views
over the city and lake.
Meanwhile, the curtains are in
Sinhala Linen Print fabric by
Martyn Lawrence Bullard for
Schumacher; the Sky roundtables are custom-made; the
square-backed chairs Voila and
oval-backed Louis XVI Bergeres
have been custom-designed,
along with the round sofa.
The chandelier is by Dennis &
Leen, mirrors in antiqued glass
framed in original panels, while
the parquet flooring is from the
Bullard Collection.

SPOTLIGHT

For the Queen Victorial suite (left and above), the wooden
flooring is in walnut; the bedside table is vintage French, sourced
from the Paris flea market; the Josephine Bed is by Bullard and
the cushions covered in Adras Ikat, designed by him.

A glam, antique look

Bullard gold-leafed the ceiling to create a glamorous vibe
at night and a beautiful reflection during the day and also
repositioned the bar to the back of the room, adding mirrors
to reflect the views. The Adras Ikat wallpaper, which is
custom-designed by Bullard, adds an exotic flavour, while
still in traditional colours with a strong pattern, giving an
unexpected accent to the room. The 27 guest rooms and
suites have been decorated in fresh blues, duck egg greens,
soft lilacs and sunshine yellows to keep the palette fresh
and timeless. Many fabrics and wall coverings come from
his own collections and were customised for the spaces.
French painted Louis IV furniture mixed with Gustavian and
Swiss antiques and the wall art depicts historic views and
scenes from the Gutschs archives. In the second bedroom
(left), the lamps are by Visual Comfort; Etagere bedside tables
designed by Bullard; the bed custom-made and upholstered
in Sultan Suzanni Saffron and cushions covered in the Gulet
Stripe Saffron and Sultans Garden Indigo/Saffron, all by
Bullard; curtains in the designers Patka Paisley; armchair
upholstered in the Gulet Stripe fabric. The bath-tub (above) is
by Kallista, while the mirror is 19th century French antique; the
tripod table is in sable, while the canopy uses Paradeiza from
Lisa Fine Fabric. The wallpaper is Schumacher Fox Hollow.
80 CASAVIVA AUGUST 15

The bed for the third bedroom is custommade by Bullard in his Sultans Garden fabric;
the linen is from the Frette Hotel Collection,
while bedside Antoinette tables are specially
designed and the 19th Century mirror is from
the Chateau Gutsch Collection.

A MOROCCAN FANTASY
PREVAILS WITH A TENTED CEILING
FOR THE BEDROOM.

A grand design
Specialty suites like the Queen Victoria have
been decorated in a grand, yet inviting style,
with many unexpected twists such as a romantic
claw-footed bath tub floating in the centre of the
room, surrounded by metres of fabrics. Antique
oil paintings, a gilded four-poster bed and soft
upholstery complete the look.
In the Majorelle suite, a Moroccan fantasy prevails
complete with a tented ceiling for the bedroom
and ottoman-style banquette seating in the sitting
room. All rooms have been equipped with top-ofthe-line mattresses and fine, high thread count
sheeting. The clients billionaire business and
media moguls Alexander Lebedev and his son
Evgeny Lebedev wanted to restore the chateau
to its former glory, while being respectful to the
Swiss history and imposing architecture.
The design brief was to create a world class
boutique hotel environment with modern day
luxury and old world charm. The public spaces
are to be enjoyed by the locals, the Swiss visitors
and tourists alike, while honouring the past and
the important role the Gutsch has played in
Lucernes history.

Limestone and Absolute Black Marble. The balcony railings, chairs
and round tables are in original 19th century iron work custom-made

ahore-based artists and couple

Aisha Khalid and Imran Qureshi
studied miniature painting at
the National College of Art in Lahore,
Pakistan, where they continue to
live along with their two sons. Their
traditional training is visible in their
work, which takes on expanded forms,
sometimes as major installations.
Both have expanded upon the
vocabulary of traditional miniature
painting from the Indian subcontinent
and Mughal imagery, investing it with a
relevance both personal and political.
As in their recent show in New Delhi,
they often exhibit together, their works
diverging from each other, resulting in
differences of scale, materials, imagery
and approach. Aisha Khalid started
working on the paintings in the current
series in November of 2014. A few
weeks later, a horrific terrorist attack
took place at the Army Public School in
Peshawar, killing 150 children. Her grief
seeped into the work, with the colour
grey appearing while the recurring
image of the flower was transformed by
getting truncated, interrupted, cut up
and no tulip is shown whole. All of her
works depict a tension between beauty
and order on one side and grief and
despondency on the other.
Meanwhile, the paintings and
installations of Imran Qureshi have a
very strong link to current events, often
reflecting on the troubled state of his
native land. The works in the current
series were initiated in 2010, after having
witnessed the aftermath of a terrorist
attack in a busy marketplace in Lahore.
The red paint simulates blood, while the
finely painted petals, the gold grounds,
and the feeling of a garden at night are
germs of hope as he calls them.

The fine petals and gold

stand for germs of hope and
persistency of the life force.

RUGS
Q
FOR LIFE
Carpet brand Obeetee
believes in making unique
handmade rugs. Angelique
OBrien, President Marketing,
talks about the process.

What do Obeetee rugs stand

for in terms of the vision?
A. Obeetee produces and globally
distributes premier handwoven carpets
providing enjoyment for generations
to come. Rugs can take months, and
sometimes years, to complete, with a
weaver knotting 9,000 knots in a day.
Each handmade rug is unique.

What is significant about the

handmade process?
A. Most weavers who make
rugs for Obeetee have weaving in
their heritage; some are fifth and sixth
generation weavers. We employ their
traditional skills to produce exquisite
rugs in tune with contemporary trends.
When our designers create a design,
trained artists create a colour-plate
which is an intricate and detailed
representation of the pattern. The handspun and dyed yarn is provided to a
weaver, with the hand-made design, to
begin the creation of a beautiful rug.

Are these heirloom pieces?

A. Depending on the density of
knots and size of the final piece,
it can take five months to over a year to
create a rug. We call them Carpets for
Life. Our handknotted rugs last a lifetime
and more, if cared for properly. These
heirloom rugs can be passed on to the
next generation.

Tell us about some memorable

rugs you have created, such as
the one at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
A. The Rashtrapati Bhawan is home
to two of the largest handknotted rugs
made in India. These were also made
in record time, considering the sizes
and weave of the rugs. Wooden trunks
ideally suited to form the main structure
of the looms had to be imported. A
special building to house the looms and
washing platforms was constructed just
to make these huge rugs, the largest
measuring 452 square metres and
containing billions of intricate knots.

life the old school art of Indian
needlework translated into global
styles of inspiration (French,
Moroccan, Portuguese) the
furnishings line was launched.

its business in 1992, she has
focused on design, innovation,
