Im mesmerised by her miniature waist as she sashays towards me at the Yash Raj cafeteria. All thoughts of
treating myself to some sinful pastries afterwards take a backseat and I concentrate on my clear soup instead.
Vaani Kapoor takes some time spreading some sugar all around as she makes her way, greeted as she is with
an avalanche of his and wassups by the various ADs and wannashines lounging in the canteen. Her clingy tee
and black pencil pants are easy on the eye and her full-throated laugh is easy on the ears. You feel a special
kind of warmth as she hugs you. Im meeting her for the first time but find an instant connect with this
boisterous Punjabi girl. My name sounds South Indian na? she jokes. Thankfully, shes chilled out about her
stardom and ready to talk nineteen-to-the-dozen. She orders some salad and we are ready to go. As we chat,
she shows me some cutesy photos of her favourite poochies on her phone. The animal lover in her would love
to go all out and rescue animals. My mind is too full of films right now Hers has been a crazy ride alright.

Since Im a Punjabi, born and brought up in Delhi, Im obviously a foodie. I love watching films good or bad.
Its been a ritual in my family ever since I can remember. Also, I am a huge Filmfare fan. You should see the
magazines stacked up at my home. Reading Filmfare, while enjoying a relaxing bath is the ultimate experience
for me. So when the chance to work with Yash Raj Films, the ultimate family entertainers, came along I
grabbed it with both hands. Im just an ordinary girl who got an extraordinary opportunity.

I grew up in a farmhouse full of animals. My father Shiv Kapoor used to run an NGO. It was like a mini zoo.
My only friends were ducks, dogs, monkeys, horses, rabbits We had more than 70 dogs and numerous cats
at our farm. I had a fetish for puppies so Id even pick them up from a gutter and bring them home. But my
mother would get upset as theyd eat a lot and crap a lot. Soon, Id started scratching myself. On a lighter note,
probably this is the reason why I am so animated. I have a funny bone, courtesy the animals. My sister thinks
Im crazy. I get fits like dogs. I could be like Jim Carrey someday.

Ive had a protected childhood. My parents wouldnt allow me to sleep over at a friends place. Even if a class
mate called me on the landline, my father would pick up the other phone to check who I was talking to. I
needed to break free. I did my Bachelors in Tourism Studies. Thats when I stayed independently in a hostel
for the first time. I got a three-year long internship with The Oberoi Hotels in Jaipur. But even today, I prefer
attending a house party instead of going to a pub or disco. I dont have a fascination for going clubbing. I am

My father didnt want me to get into modelling. Coming from an army background, my mother understands
that exposure is important. But my father believes girls should be married off. My sister got married when she
was 18. But I wanted to be independent. I was plump. I weighed around 75 kilos and wore braces when I went
to the modelling agency in Delhi. Strangely, they selected me. I worked out and lost weight. Soon I bagged a
plum assignment. Trust me modelling helps you pay your bills.

I had come down for a days shoot to Mumbai for a print campaign. My modelling agency asked me to meet
the casting director of Yash Raj Films, Shanoo Sharma. Shanoo took my dance test. I was about to board the
plane back to Delhi when she called up and asked me to stay back and audition further. Wed visits
restaurants and salons where she would ask me to enact something impromptu. Those were on-the-spot tests.
They seemed bizarre initially. But I told myself if I couldnt do it in front of a random crowd, I wouldnt be
able to do it on screen. I grew confident. It helped me get rid of my inhibitions. Those tapes went to director
Maneesh Sharma and Aditya Chopra. They liked them and I was on board.

Initially, I wasnt keen to join the film industry as I feared casting couch. I had a secure life in Delhi. The
world of modelling is scarier for men. Im lucky that I didnt encounter the casting couch since I was from a
reputed modelling agency. And with YRF too youre in safe hands. I believe people proposition you when you
are desperate for work and dont know the right set of people. People tend to take advantage of you when
youre lost.

When my father saw the first trailer of SDR, which also had the kissing scene, he was taken aback. My mother
too felt awkward but she dealt with it maturely. Adi said, Your mother is cool! Actually, my mother is a
drama queen. My mother kept voicing her opinion throughout the screening. I was so embarrassed! I have
two more movies to go with YRF and in between if other directors dont offer me work then Ill just cling to
Adi (Aditya Chopra). Honestly, I am anxious since I havent signed any film. But Im not going to have a

nervous breakdown because I believe YRF will give me something good. Adi has faith in me. I want to feel
miserable with too much work. I want to crib about not having time. I dont ever want to sit back and relax.

I feel weird giving autographs. I know it sounds silly but despite being a model, I shy away from pictures. I
believe Im not photogenic. No guy has ever used a pick-up line on me. Maybe I scare them. I guess I give the
wrong vibe. I need to be naughty. Perhaps I should wink at a guy and pretend that I didnt. On a serious note,
its difficult to find love these days. You have to accept someone at their worst to be able to enjoy them at their
best. I am short-tempered but I also cool down easily. So if my guy can handle this side of me, then he is
surely in love with me.

I have never had a boyfriend in school. Id laugh in my head when Id see a couple canoodling. I knew once
they were out of school they wouldnt remember each other. I knew my infatuations too would die down. Id
think long term - marriage. I dont know what has happened to Indian men. They are confused. Cheating on
your partner is in these days, which scares the hell out of me. I dont want to date just for the heck of it. For
the time being, Im happy dreaming about Bradley Cooper...
