Tips for Leaders: Teach the boys to use the buddy system whenever the group attends an event
away from your regular facilities. It is easier to see and monitor two people than one. If the boys
are in a designated area, they are not required to stay together, but each boy should know where
his buddy is. The buddy system can be taught through games and should be constantly monitored
by the group leader. If the group leader notices a boy without his buddy, he should reunite them.
You may need to help a boy determine who will be his buddy, but it usually works for the boys
to choose their own buddies. Have each boy demonstrate his ability to stay with his buddy. In any
away activity, remind the boys to find their buddies and to stay near them. Deal with any problems
quickly. Choose the boy with the greatest difficulties to be your buddy.

Option 1: Art in the Dark

Display an easy picture for the boys to draw. Tell them that the boy who draws the
image closest to the original will be the winner. There is one catch. They will have to
draw the image in the dark. Once you have given them enough time to memorize the
picture, turn off the lights and have the boys begin. An option is to blindfold the boys.
Option 2: Flying Dutchman
Have all the boys form a large circle. One boy is chosen to walk around the outside of
the circle. As he goes around the circle, he pauses long enough to tap one boy on the
shoulder. The boys then run around the circle in opposite directions, trying to get back
to the empty spot in the circle. The boy getting back to the empty spot first wins, and
the game continues.

Frontiersmen lived mostly off the land, eating deer, fish, rabbits, squirrels, nuts, berries,
and other foods found in nature. But whenever a frontiersman could, he traded his catch of
furs for flour to bake bread. Bread could be baked in many different forms. (Show various
types of bread.) It could be baked as soft bread or hard biscuits. Usually it was baked as

hard biscuits that wouldnt spoil as easily. The frontiersman would carry these biscuits with
him, and that would give him daily bread to keep him healthy and strong.
Flour for bread is made from the ground-up seeds of wheat, barley, rye, or corn. Because these seeds contain many vitamins and nutrients, bread is good for you.
The Bible compares itself to bread. Just as the frontiersman would like to have daily
bread to keep him healthy, Christians need the Bible as their daily bread. Christians should
read the Bible every day, and enjoy reading the Bible more than they enjoy eating breads.
Note what the Bible says: Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that
comes from the mouth of the Lord (Deuteronomy 8:3).
This verse is telling us that a Christian needs more than just bread to live. A Christian
needs to hear and read the Word of the Lord in order to remain healthy. This includes
study of the various people whose lives are recorded in the Bible.
Job 23:12 says, I have not departed from the commands of His lips; I have treasured
the words of His mouth more than my daily bread.
This verse says that God has commanded us to read, hear, and love His Word. We are
to love Gods Word more than we love to eat every day!
In the New Testament, Jesus called himself the Bread of Life. He explained that everyone who believes in Him wouldnt be spiritually hungry.
Jesus is instructing us to read His Word. Gods Word is food to a Christian. Gods Word
will help a Christian remain spiritually strong and healthy.
A frontiersman depended on food to sustain his strength. Bread was one of the foods
that he learned to carry with him every day to give him strength. Bread sometimes wasnt
available to the frontiersman, but Jesus and His Word are always available to us. A Christian learns to feed on Gods Word as his daily bread. The words of Jesus are our bread to
give us spiritual strength and make us strong.
